I believe "Galicia" was askin' about partitures.

Sure, I'm at a loss to help, since the word "partiture" isn't even in me Oxford....

my best guess (from a similar word in German): the man (woman) from Galicia looks for notesheets, scores, musical notations for Irish music.

For songs, this copy of Digitrad is a good start, for tunes I cannot help.

Galicia, you can get there easily. Click on 'Links' at the top of this forum homepage, then scroll down to 'Ceolas' and click. Some very old Irish and Scots music is at:
www.standingstones.com
Click on the 'Encyclopedia' Icon, and select 'fretted instruments' (and whatever else strikes your fancy). "Callino" is the oldest Irish tune known, and there's a short (and incomplete) writeup on it there, noting also other tunes in the (irish) Ballet Lute Book.

Galicia, I've got a good address for you to go to. I've got to find the exact address, though. I'll post it later.

Celtic Colours 2003 (#7) will be starting in THREE weeks!

The main concert information has been on the site since early in June, but recently, the various workshops have been posted to the Events pages.

There are workshops on Fiddle, Piano, Step-Dance, Gaelic Song and several combinations including All-Day Events. Also included are a series of Conversations and Lectures with a number of the artists.

There seems to be more of these workshops than any previous years.

Tickets are selling out fast for Celtic Colours. Many of the best venues have seating for only a few hundred so don't delay your purchase.
There should be some tickets for the Guitar Summit for sale at the Highland Guitar Club in Judique this Sunday afternoon.

Hi Guys,
I just got a dose of panic from your postings and thought, What is I can't get in anywhere so I've booked myself into the Bards and Ballads concert in Wag''' somewher(I'm sorry but I'll learn the name in the next two days. Tommy Sands and Dave Gunning is worth seeing seperarely but on the one bill! I'm sure I'm going to love the rest.

Murray I'm sure the ms Massie will be massive ; After all her dad was a fisheries officer who turned harbour master - a unique case of a gamekeeper turned poacher!
Now I've got to look at that programme again!

Murray & George,
I will try to report back on the guitar session in Judique. I wouldn't call it a review though, as my qualifications may be in question. What I do know though is that Dave MacIsaac, Scott Macmillan, and J.P. Cormier together on stage will be spellbinding. This I have seen before and I am amazed at the ability of each one.
John Doyle and Anna Massie will be new to me and I look forward to seeing them play.
On a side note I just came from The Creamery Ceilidh in Port Hawkesbury. The main fiddler tonight was Buddy Mac Master and a surprise guest(even to Buddy) was his neice Natalie. She played a set with Buddy and she did one on her own, as well as joining in with about a dozen members of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association to end the evening.
A great warm up for the days to come!
                   Slainte,
                      Sandy

Well I just got back from the Guitar Summit in Judique so I will pass along my impressions.
On stage were J.P. Cormier, John Doyle, Scott Macmillan, Anna Massie, and Dave MacIsaac.
They opened the show all playing together. (a rousing start)
Next Dave played setting the pace picking some pipe tunes. This set the bar rather high for the others to follow. Anna played next and my first impression was that she was not up to the task but she quickly got over the nerves and soon proved me totally wrong. Scott played mostly his own compositions and told the story behind each piece. His playing was smooth and precise as usual. Next was John who first sang a song and later played some great jigs. Next was J.P. who just put her in overdrive. During the evening he amazed those prescent with a variety of styles from Chet Atkins ( he does Chet better than Chet did) to hard driving jigs. He played the Little Beggerman starting at
about 1.5 times normal speed. He played several turns of the tune increasing the speed each time until the pace was blinding. Despite the speed you could still hear each note distinct from the next. I don't know how the hell he does it!
Later in the show Dave was at his very best on some strathspeys.
There is always some subjective discussion as to who is the best between J.P. and Dave. My own opinion is that nobody can touch J.P. on the faster jigs and reels but I prefer Dave on strathspey and hornpipes. In any case when you put the two of them together it enhances the performance of each.
There is a thread running right now about the 100 top players. Nobody should be allowed to make such a list until they have heard these two play together first! :-}
All in all it was a great night. All of the Celtic Colours events that I have attended this year were excellent.
       Slainte,
         Sandy

Missed this first time round, Sandy, thanks for putting up the review.

Sounds like yet another great Guitar Summit, I agree there is nobody (well just maybe one) who is JP's equal at fast picking.

I am glad young Ms Massie managed to acquit herself with credit in such distinguished company.

Hi Guys,
I made it to the Bards and Ballads and then on to the guitar summit and even on to the pickers paradise.
First person I met there was Bob Massie, Anna's father. He was nervous, she was nervous and even I was nervous but as Sandy said, she proved that she is up there with these guys.
I was there with a bunch of very tallanted kids from Plockton and they were more than impressed with JP. It was a great pity, however to hear on the news, just before I left, that his van got brocken into and all his instruments were stolen. Let's hope that he gets them back safely.
My favourite night of the festival was the "Biggest Square Dance in the World".
I love Baddeck as a place and the atmosphere of about 1100 peaple all enjoying themselves was very infectious.
I actually was walking down the street on the Sunday and got interviewed by CTV. I obvioulsy praised the festival but just had to say that what made it even more special was the sheer warmth and friendliness of the people.
Well done to all Cape Brettoners, I'm now back in Skye and saving up for next year.
A bit of good news! The no frills airline, Zoom are going to do cheap returns from Glasgow to Halifax starting next spring.
Chi mi rithist thu!
Andy

Hi there,
Just thought I'd let you all know the local response to Anna Massie. I was at the Judique Guitar Summit to do a review for Rambles (an on-line cultural arts magazine).

It was just as Sandy MacLean said. We'weren't sure if she was out of her league with the bunch she was on stage with but the audience was on her side and prepared to be generous, but she certainly put an end to any fears that she couldn't hold her own.

JP himself was obviously impressed and watched her with something close to glee. He even mentioned something like he wasn't letting her back on the bus (wanted to keep her around Cape Breton for a while and get a handle on her style, it seemed.) He is defineitely a collector of styles and can do just about anything he wants with strings. She was an amazing player and quickly won our admiration by not backing down from the inherent challenge of the night and met it head on with some excellent playing that was right up there with the rest of them. Not only was her playing wonderful, but the music she chose really filled out the Celtic repetoire of the evening.

This was my first time to see and hear John Doyle and he added something many folks have mentioned they'd like to see at the guitar summit and that is singing. He was an admirable player with great songs and great playing that added an new and I think interesting element to the usually all instrumental show.

Boy I regret missing that guitar summit. I already went to CB this year and couldn't legitimize another visit so soon...

I am a big fan of both Dave MacIsaac and JP. So when they play together, how do they set a tempo? Difference in styles is that Dave can play any tempo, likes slower ones where he can milk the sound of each note; JP more a blister-meister--listening to him, you ask "what did he just do?" cause he's already on to another incredible lick.
