Mississippi Fred McDowell. People usually think if him as a great blues singer until they try to play what he played. Ain't easy. Plenty of Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton, Leo Kottkee, Micheal Hedges sound alikes but no Fred McDowell sound alikes that come to my mind. That says something about his skills and style.

I'd have to say Martin Carthy and Lester Flatt. Couldn't be farther apart on the folk musical spectrum, but they've both got that "something" about their playing.

I'd second Bennett Hammond's playing, also Martin Carthy's, also fond of Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch, Dick Gaughan (in the quieter, non bashing mode), Julie Henigan also has a nice way on the fingerboard. And too many others to name.

For a folkmusic site this list is certainly tilted to rock musicians. How about Merle Travis, Mississippi John Hurt, Doc Watson, Blind Blake (the blues musician, not the calypso musician) and Joseph Spence, all musicians who developed remarkable guitar styles without the aid of listening to recordings or elctronic amplification or distortion?

While I must agree that a guitarist is a guitarist no matter what kind of music he/she plays, I dont think it is right to lump electricians with musicians. You can do things with an electric guitar that you simply can't do on an acoustic. You can also do things you SHOULD'T do! Yes, I'm biased. To me, an electric guitar is a totally different instrument. Now, that said, what would be the result if we broke them down by two different categories? The 4 string banjo and the 5 string banjo, to the uneducated eye, look pretty much alike, but, we know that they are two different instruments. Dont we? It has been said that there is no such thing as a good example, but, this is as close as I can come. Oh, I have it, can you imagine putting Fred Van Eppes in the same category with Earl Scruggs?

Dylan was an amazing guitar player when he started. Johnny Winter's electric playing was astounding, but his acoustic stuff was even better. Django Reinhardt is one of the most amazing musicians I've ever heard. Jeff Beck continues to floor me. Robert Johnson and Son House got sounds out of acoustic guitars that most people didn't realize were there. Mississippi John Hurt is one of the sweetest pickers I've ever heard. Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Willie Johnson, ah the list just goes on and on.

Paul Downes, who used to play with Phil Beer back before his Albion Band and Show of Hands Days. I also love Mississippi John Hurt, who at times fools you into thinking the guitar is playing itself. There's the wonderful Bert Jansch, Robert Johnson... On the electric side I always loved Peter Green, Mick Taylor and Paul Kosssoff - and that's before I've even started on the North Americans...

David Gilmour has been the Pink Floyd Guitarist for years, at least since '70. He replaced Syd Barrett. I'm not familiar with the song that you're referring to, but I'd guess it's Gilmour, one of the most tasteful electric players I've heard.

Zeb Turner was the lead guitarist for Elton Britt and Me when we toured Ontario in 1957. He is (or was) the compleat guitarist. He plays Bach (as written) a few of Mozart's piano sonata which he adapted to the guitar, Flamenco, and, in fact,any type of music one can think of.
Paul Geremia also plays all kinds of stuff besides blues and ragtime, when we're just hangin' aound jamming.

I don't think Lester Flatt originated any Bluegrass runs. Before Bill Monroe pulled old time stuff out of the dust, polished them up and called it "Bluegrass" We "old Farts" were playing the same guitar runs that Lester Flatt Uses. I do not want to give the impression that Lester Flatt is just a good old guitar picker and singer. His and Earl Scruggs' contribution to the development of the "Bluegrass" genre was considerable. They were pioneers, but not in guitar bass runs.

GUEST, grgptrsn: Yeah, John Fahey was a heck of a player. Just real spacey. I don't think he ever knew exactly what was going to come out of his guitar when he sat down to play. I heard him many times because he played in and around the D.C area. I enjoyed his music but some of my friends couldn't stand his music.

Also, DANNY GATTON, the "best unknown guitar player" who other guitarists when they were in the D.C. area would try to catch. Now, ol' bobert, appreciated his technical skills but he over played everything he did by trying to showcase all his tricks in every song.

Add Dave Mallett to this list. I like what he does with a guitar.Also, Nikos Apollonio, the luthier, is no slouch on a guitar. For a man who plays both acoustic and electric, I'd have to say, Denny Breau. You may recall that his brother, Lenny, was a world famous jazz guitarist. Chet Atkins once said of Lenny, "He has forgotten more about the guitar than I ever knew."

Norman Blake: The ultimate American (White, Anglo) traditional guitarist - flatpicking, fingerpicking, maybe nose- for all I know.

Chris Newman: Ilkley (sp?), Yorkshire. One of the top 50 or so American-style flatpickers for technical ability, probably in the top 20 for musicianship, and one of the two or three in that group who isn't American. And the only one I know who does O'Carolan and them as a regular thing. And cooks a great meal of chicken and noodles.

Jack Lawrence: Doc Watson's sidekick of many years. Probably one of the most underrated guitarists around, because he's spent so much time in Doc's shadow. But Doc could have had any guitar player, almost, tour with him, and he chose Jack. Of course, now that he's sold off his Collings, his playing may have suffered a little... (Nyuck, nyuck).

Andrew Hardin: Tom Russell's guitar player. Plays a "cardboard" acoustic-electric Takamine by his own choice, and does the most incredible things with it. Get The Long Way Around and listen to "The Angel of Lyon."

James Burton is still a favorite of mine along with Albert Lee. I really enjoyed Robbie Basho years back. I would have to add Kyle Gass from Tenacious D. He has such a fluid rhythymic style that I am envious. I could mention Doc and merle and Norman and Rick but so is everyone else.

One of the most surprising and original players I've heard lately is Ian Carr. Very unusual, creative approach to tune back-up. Check out his and accordionist Karen Tweed's CD "Fyace" on Compass Records.

Pete Townshend, not frequently considered a guitar god, but he can communicate a message on acoustic or electric. And after that performance in NY acouple months ago, I think he's ageing quite gracefully

You'll need an MP3 player loaded on your system before you can download and hear them through your speakers. I have provided a link on that page as well, to where you can download a free MP3 player.
