Hello, I am looking for the tune to this song,

THe North Wind doth blow and it will bring snow What will the robin do then, poor thing?

I had no trouble at all finding the lyrics, but it isn't practical for my school to by the $20 cd so we know the tune...it's only for The Mousetrap by Agatha Chrisite...one of the characters is supposed to sing that brief part. And obviously it used to be well known...so anyway, I hope very very much one of you can help! Thanks, Larkswift

Hi, Larkswift, welcome to the Mudcat. Until someone else comes in here and answers your question, the best I can do is suggest you send an email to the person listed at the bottom of this page, as they mention knowing the tune from childhood: click here. I hope that helps.

Also, do you have the name of the CD? If so, a search at Amazon or on google might scare up a midi you could listen to online to get the tune.

Good luck!

kat

From The Teacher's Manual for Infant Schools and Preparatory Classes by Thomas Urry Young (Dublin: James M'Glashan, 1852), page 204:

THE NORTH WIND.

The north wind doth blow, and we shall have snow;
And what will the robin do then, poor thing?
He'll sit in a barn, and keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing, poor thing.

The north wind doth blow, and we shall have snow;
And what will the swallow do then, poor thing?
Oh I do you not know that he's gone long ago
To a country much warmer than ours, poor thing?

The north wind doth blow, and we shall have snow;
And what will the honey-bee do, poor thing?
In his hive he will stay, till the cold's gone away,
And then he'll come out in the spring, poor thing.

The north wind doth blow, and we shall have snow;
And what will the dormouse do then, poor thing?
Roll'd up like a ball, in his nest snug and small,
He'll sleep till warm weather comes back, poor thing.

The north wind doth blow, and we shall have snow;
And what will the children do then, poor things?
When lessons are done, they'll jump, skip and run,
And play till they make themselves warm, poor things.

Well found, Jim. Coincidentally, I remember learning this at "elocution classes" in Dublin, nearly sixty years ago. My mother used to claim it was the first thing I ever performed in public!

Martin, are you saying you sang all that, sixty years ago - or was it a recitation?

If anybody can transcribe a tune and e-mail it to me, I'd be glad to post it.
