The only lyrics I remember go as follows:

There was a hole in the middle of the ground The prettiest hole you ever did see And the green grass grew all around and the greeen grass grew all around

My son Daniel needs to perform this song in his school next week. Needless to say, this is a Kids song. Thanks in advance.

THE GREEN GRASS GREW ALL AROUND

There was a hole in the middle of the ground
The prettiest hole that you ever did see.
Well, the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this hole there was a root
The prettiest root that you ever did see
Well the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this root there was tree
The prettiest tree that you ever did see
Well the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this tree there was a branch...
The prettiest branch that you ever did see
Well the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this branch there was twig...
The prettiest twig that you ever did see
Well the twig on the branch
And the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this twig there was a nest...
The prettiest nest that you ever did see
Well the nest on the twig
And the twig on the branch
And the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this nest there was an egg...
The prettiest egg that you ever did see
Well the egg in the nest
And the nest on the twig
And the twig on the branch
And the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this egg there was a bird...
The prettiest bird that you ever did see
Well the bird on the egg
And the egg in the nest
And the nest on the twig
And the twig on the branch
And the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this bird there was a wing...
The prettiest wing that you ever did see
Well the wing on the bird
And the bird on the egg
And the egg in the nest
And the nest on the twig
And the twig on the branch
And the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this wing, there was a feather...
The prettiest feather that you ever did see
Well the feather on the wing
And the wing on the bird
And the bird on the egg
And the egg in the nest
And the nest on the twig
And the twig on the branch
And the branch on the tree
And the tree on the root
And the root in the hole
And the hole in the ground
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around.

yes I did! but I couldn't find it.

I was pretty sure I'd seen the "hole" thing - and according to Joe's post it's in the DT as well - but I can't get it to come up in a search there either...

Thanks for the quick response! By the way, I took the time to read Mudcat members' bios; what a great and diverse group of talented people. I will be checking back in frequently.

Thanks again. Gus.

..On the feather there was a gnat, on the gnat there was an eye, on the eye there was an eyelash is the last verse of the version I know, but it also begins with the tree in the hole and the hole in the ground and the green grass growing all around all around and the green grass growing all around. You tqake a HUGE deep breath before ...Eyelash on the eye and the eye on the gnat...and so on.

For those among us who were folk-song-deprived as children, is there a tune posted somewhere for this song? I can't find it in the DT at all, lyrics or tune.

This is a very important and notably pagan religious song. Generally the American versions either drop the final circlular verses (per MMario) or drop them and continue the song to the absurd length per Mrrzy. Point is that originally it reflected the life cycle and was called (and often still called in the UK) "The Everlasting Circle." Jewish and Christian thinking is cyclical, yes, but not circular. That is, Birth/Marriage/Procreation/Death but not Rebirth. We prefer a hierarchical concept, overall. That is, leading from the smallest up to God. This song in America goes to the smallest but that's a detail.

Thus, the "EC" ends
And from that feather was made a bed
And on that bed there lay a maid.
And to that maid there came a youth
And from that youth there came a seed
And from that seed there grew a tree

Circular, ye see.

I keep posting Circular Song requests. True ones are quite rare but I've built up a short list of them. And a few circular dialogues (Eg "You remind me of a man" from The Batchelor and the Bobbysoxer a favorite movie of mine.)

Wait a mo' The Utah Phillips radio show is supposed to be being stream-rebroadcast on KGNU right NOW! Where'd it go? I want my Utah Phillips!
