I've been invited to sing a few comic Scottish songs at a Burns night party. I'm trying to resist "Donald where's your troosers", but will probably do Billy Conolly's Wellies song.

I discovered that this one does not seem to be in the DT or the forum. I have it on a 4-CD "Best of Folk" set, which also has Watt Nicoll singing "Borderlands". Apart from that I have never knowingly heard any of his work. Can anyone recommend him?

THE GREENFIELDS OF DUNDEE

There's a factory on the outskirts of Dundee
Round it grow the fields of Smedley's peas
After school they set me free
Every year when I was wee
To pea in the green fields of Dundee

Ah, the highlight of school life was for me
The six weeks every year they let us pea
But they fairly drove us daft
Before they let us aff
Teaching us to pea in the green fields of Dundee

Now you might think that anyone can pea
And wonder what the joy of it could be
They had contests for the best
Man, you had to pass a test
To pea in the green fields of Dundee

'Twas at the pea-ing that the girls first caught my ee
I noticed they pea'd different frae me
Being five-foot-six or so
I pea'd high whilst they pea'd low
As we pea'd in the green fields of Dundee

Now my heart soon was lost to Polly the Pea
The finest little pea-er in Dundee
Braved all kinds of weather
That we might pea together
To pea in the green fields of Dundee

I've found happiness in many different ways
But aye my mind returns to childhood days
But the kids all think me saft
For they'd just stand there and laugh
(Spoken) If I went back for just one last
Pea in the green fields of Dundee

Watt Nichol is an old friend of mine We met in the 60s when he played the North East clubs. He was the Scottish TV Zoologist and married a girl called Doreen Swann who was Miss Scotland in the Miss World contest. I have two of his LPs "Ballad of the Bog" and "Watt is a Four Letter Word" and his song book. He wrote songs which were very funny at the time. Last time I saw him was on a TV programme, he was living in a Scotish castle and doing something very eccentric but I can't remember exactly what

Bill I believe he's become a 'hypnotist' playing pubs and theatres. I recall that he got into some trouble when some punter either sued him or something, I know it got splashed about the Scottish Sunday Mail. He also became famous for being one time England Footie Manager Kevin Keegan's motivation consultant, all part of the Jock Master Plan of taking over the wurld and ripping the pish oot o' the Sassenachs. You can take away oor lives but you cannie take oor freedommmmmmmm............
