Geoff the Duck advised me to start a new thread instead of using last year's, as it might confuse people - he's right of course, it confused me totally!
The Gainsborough UK Old Time Festival will happen the weekend of 15-17 Feb at the Castle Hills Community Arts College, The Avenue, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Full details can be found at The Old Thread, including the superb 3 day Old Time workshop which will follow it.

Cheers
Ray

Last year was the first time myself and Mrs.Duck got to this festival. We enjoyed it very much. In particular the performances of Chris Ginn, an very unassuming young American whose Appalachian Flatfooting and Buckdancing is more impressive than Michael Flatley was in Riverdance.
We intend to get to the festival if at all possible this year. Are any other Mudcatters likely to be there?

Organizer Keith Johnson tells me that a US fiddler called Bo Hughes is coming over for the fun of it - anyone know him?

Cheers

Not this year although we've been known to drop in some other years. This year we'll be dressed up as Vikings for the week in the Merchant Adventurers Hall doing a craft fair as part of the York Viking Week. Fancy any good badges......

Old Faded Glory, who'll be at the festival, have apparently been playing since the sixties. They are Barry Murphy, John O'Connell and Tony Wetjen - I've got a feeling I saw Barry Murphy do a folk club back in the sixties. Has anyone seen these guys or know what they're like?. I'm really looking forward to the Rough Deal String Band. For me, these guys are the best thing in these islands for Old Time music. Bill Whelan's banjo playing is about perfect - driving non-repetitive clawhammer that lifts the band up. Tim Rogers' fiddle playing is the real thing, while Ben Keogh sings beautifully and holds them together with great flatpicking. I'm slightly biased, I suppose - I did a five day workshop with Bill Whelan at Sore Fingers last Easter, and was thoroughly impressed with the depth of his banjo knowledge. Apparently he's also the Bass player on a lot of De Dannaan (sp?) records.

Cheers

I've just heard a bit of news - an addition to the festival. Kate Lissauer will be there with her fiddle, banjo and voice - a lovely talented lady, who's also great for playing in sessions. Another snippet: Chris Ginn the rubber legged dancer who is coming back by popular demand after last year's superb performance will be joining the three day workshop after the festival, so if you want to learn flatfooting or Buckdancing, now's your chance.

Cheers
Ray

The thread seems to have dropped off the bottom of the forum. I thought that I should bring it back to the top, because I enjoyed what I saw of last years festival. I would suggest people who can get there give it a try!

I've just been for a walk round and there are now people playing a variety of instruments all over the place. Including outside in the sun! Haven't spotted Banjo Ray yet though. Try again later - back to work now.
