I remember the night that he came in. The wind breathed cold and damp.
CHORUS: “So here's to those that are dead, dead and gone, the friends that I loved dear.

Subject: Chords Add: DONEGAL DANNY From: DonMeixner Date: 15 Mar 99 - 07:54 AM C F C (I don't know the words well, I only sing the chorus)
C F c Is this enough Alison? I play banjo on this one so some lead notes may pass through chords that I don't play. Probably Em and Dm if they are in there at all. Don |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny- chords From: Liam's Brother Date: 15 Mar 99 - 08:06 AM Hi Alison! Did a gig at a yacht club last Saturday and someone asked me to sing this one. I was amused because I'm leaving for Donegal next Sunday. How did he know that? My friend "Banjo" Burke, a great tenor who also plays the tenor banjo sings this one. I can almost hear him singing it... almost! If I knew the melody better, I'd give you the chords right now! It's in a straight major scale so 3 or 4 chords should be fine. All the best and good luck on Wednesday! |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny- chords From: Don Meixner Date: 15 Mar 99 - 09:52 PM Alison Read that as: The cruel sea has beaten me, I'll end my days on the shore. Don |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny- chords From: Don Date: 15 Mar 99 - 11:23 PM I just checked the lyrics in the data base for Donegal Danny. Its a good thing I don't sing but only the chorus. Don |

Subject: RE: Donegal Danny From: Clifton53 Date: 10 Mar 00 - 11:57 AM The Dubliners do a nice version of this song. I have it on a Greatest Hits CD of theirs. I like it for it's vividness, and it is a timeless story of the perils of the sea. And I love the singer with the gravelly voice. What was his name? And is he deceased as I have heard? Clifton53 |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny From: zander (inactive) Date: 10 Mar 00 - 02:31 PM Clifton, the singer with the gravelly voice is Ronnie Drew still alive and singing but no longer with the Dubliners |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny From: kendall Date: 10 Mar 00 - 07:43 PM I learned Darby O'Leary from the Dubliners. Also have a recording of Ronnie Drew singing Easy and Slow, and I swear he was stiffer than a tin boot. |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny From: Den Date: 10 Mar 00 - 08:09 PM Luke Kelly was the Dubliner that died while still in the band. Why is Ronnie Drew still not in the group? Den |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny From: zander (inactive) Date: 11 Mar 00 - 06:43 AM Den, Ronnie has left the group once before to follow his own career and then re-joined. He has been replaced by Paddy Riley this time. Cheers, Dave |
Subject: RE: Donegal Danny From: Den Date: 11 Mar 00 - 09:19 PM Thanks Dave, I actually found Ronnie's website right after posting. Its pretty interesting. It has lots of sound clips from his new CD. Den |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Don Firth Date: 17 Jan 02 - 12:39 PM Hmm. The tune on the "Irishsongs" website was pretty sparse. Only the chorus. As I recall, the tunes for the verse and the chorus are not quite the same (unfortunately, right now it's buried someplace in a box of tapes). Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Wolfgang Date: 17 Jan 02 - 12:41 PM At one of the next updates the DT should give credit to the songwriter, Phil Coulter. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: GUEST,Fasteddy Date: 17 Jan 02 - 04:03 PM No problem on lyrics, give me an address and I'll send them |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Fasteddy Date: 17 Jan 02 - 04:31 PM Well you asked for lyrics pal! OK so you want a recording of the song? Have two versions, best one by The Dubliners, complete with double verse, again, give me an address and i'll send you a copy, anything else? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Jan 02 - 04:55 PM Having memory problems, no needle in record player to play only version I have, I've not got real player or media player installed... Subject: Donegal Danny From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Jun 02 - 12:31 AM G'day all, A friend was after the words and tune to Donegal Danny - and I said I would check the DT for him. Well, there was a good set of words posted Oct '97 by TK (Terry K?) ... but no tune. I looked at Alan of Oz's tune site but to no avail. Could some keen 'Catter point me to a set of dots? ... Or a MIDI ... I'd even settle for translating an ABC! (My friend is decidedly even less 'computate' than me, so there is no point in steering him towards resource sites. Thanks in advance, Bob Bolton |
Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: DONEGAL DANNY From: DonMeixner Date: 13 Jun 02 - 12:37 AM This is either a Pete St. John or Phil Coulter tune, (I think) and its one tough cookie to find the dots too. Better to get a recording and have him/her learn it that way. Good luck here are some words and chords anyway. Don DONEGAL DANNY
I remember the night when he came in
Chorus:-
Then in a voice that was hushed and low Chorus
One fateful night in the wind and the rain Chorus
The storm it broke and drove the boat
But the raging sea was rising still Chorus
Ever since that night I've been on the road

I [G]remember the night when [C]he came [G]in
Chorus:- |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Donegal Danny From: Musicman Date: 13 Jun 02 - 01:01 AM Such a great song!!.. my friend Danny Burns used to sing that in the band we played in.. (he passed away May 7th.... anyway.. i might have a recording of danny singing it somewhere .. if not.. i could record it for you.. or maybe send you a midi of the melody...... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Donegal Danny From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Jun 02 - 02:32 AM G'day again, Don Meixner: Thanks for the reply. The (probable) credits will help track it down ... but may not find published music. My friend is a classically trained violinist and so he wants traditional notation. The chords will be good if he switches to another of the instruments he plays less often ... tenor banjo or mandolin ... but not guitar. I have already given him the words from the DT ... but I will compare for any nice differences in your set! I don't know how well he remembers the tune, which was sung by a mutual friend ... who worked for a short time with blue asbestos in a British naval dockyard - before migrating to Australia ... and who died a year or two back from mesothelioma! Musicman: Thanks for your offer. A recording or (even better for extracting 'dots') a MIDI would be very handy. I would like to see the tune added to Alan (of Oz)'s Mudcat Music Page ... along with all the Australian song tunes I owe him! If I get something that suits, I will pass it on so that all 'Catters have access to it. If you have a reasonably compact digital file of the song, will PM an e-mail address suitable to receive it. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Sep 02 - 03:39 PM Subject: Can't find out who wrote the song Donega Dann From: Dukemerrick@aol Date: 24-Sep-02 - 01:38 PM I would like to know who wrote the song 'Donegal Danny" and the name of the publisher so that I can contact them I've transferred the above from the Help Forum. Is it agreed that Phil Coulter is the songwriter, as stated above? BMI has the song registered, but says the writer is unknown. ASCAP doesn't list it. Could it be traditional? -Joe Offer- |
