I saw Dean Martin do this song on Television a few years ago. Ithink someone else may have written it. I sure would like to have the lyrics for the night. I'm going to a friends 40th birthday party tonight and she likes to drink wine, so I was thinking Tiny Bubbles would be good song to sing.

It's on every album you'll be able to find by Hawaii's Don Ho (it was his hit).

Good luck, Chet W.

I have the English words to this song
The English version goes like this

Ch.
Tiny bubbles (Tiny bubbles) in the wine (In the wine)
make me happy (Make me happy) make feel fine (Make me feel fine)
Tiny bubbles (Tiny bubbles) make me warm all over
with a feeling that I'm gonna love you till the end of time

1. So here's to the golden moon
and here's to the silver sea
and mostly here's a toast to you and me

2. So here's to the ginger lei
I give to you today
and here's a kiss that will not fade away

There's a singer in Scotland called Sydney Devine and this is his Theme song.

Sometimes you will find it 8 or 9 times on a Don Ho album. Be sure to slur the lyrics for that authentic Don Ho sound.

WHO IS HE?

Don Ho was a lounge entertainer in Hawai'i. Nothing more. Worse than that, however, doesn't anybody remember how much Lawrence Welk played that song. If you want the words "WHITE BREAD BLAND - KICK ME" tattooed on your forehead, just play that in public.

Almost 2 1/2 years too late- Liz, there are many kinds of ginger. Some have pretty flowers. Picture: ginger lei

There is also a song about a yellow one- "My Yellow Ginger Lei," recorded by almost every Hawai'ian singer.
I don't know how old Don Ho is now, but he is well along the road. He has his own club. Dinner show package $52. Don Ho
Save your money- eat a California Pizza or a Japanese noodle shop- or find a loco moku if really hungry and go watch the sunset. A couple of spots usually have a prety fair show, if you want to spend.

Next question who is/was Lawrence Welk?

Because there are people all over the world who have never heard of these people like Don Ho and Lawerence Welk.

Just like people all over the world haven't heard of Sydney Devine.

God bless you all.

Sydney Devine is the King of Scottish Country music he's a legend in his own lunchtime

Lawrence Welk--"Wunerful, wunerful." Scandihoovian bandleader from some uppermidwest U.S. state. Probably broke records for the number of programs recorded, or the amount of soap that was channeled through the set bubble machine. My mother used to watch him, and I watched with her when I was little. The charm soon wore off and I headed to my room to read when he came on.

As about a clear as mud, I've still no idea who he is/was because I live in Scotland and I was born in the 60's and even then we didn't get American telly.

Sydney Devine does for singing what Marlon Brando does for hang-gliding and does for music what Harpo Marx did for talking books.

If he hits a note he apologies to it. Last time I heard noises like that they were coming from an abatoir.

I hope he lives for ever as I would top myself at the thought of two hours of tribute shows on Scottish TV.

Sorry if I touched a nerve--but you started it! Sydney Devine--the drinking mans Daniel O'Donnell.

Enough minor American cultural icons have been disparaged here I'm no longer sure one or more of our "Guests" are trying to comprehend. Here is the Offical Don Ho Page. And here is a Hawaiian activies site with more about him.

Who'd have thought it, but Lawrence Welk has been has been franchised into resorts with golf and musical activities. This site says he's of German descent (whew!) and from North Dakota. Anyway, you'll find more at this Google Search. A one and a two-a.

Since I've never heard of Sydney Divine, I'll just post the Google search results here.

C-Flat

Please don't. This will not sit easily on my conscience. The man is so bad the Voluntary Euthanasia Society hand out leaflets DURING his concert.

He has a following of women of a certain age (mid-70's plus - his own generation) who seem to think he is Tom Jones and they throw their knickers at him!

Promise me C-flat? Please???

Lawrence W(h)elk and his orchestra put out very bland popular, polka, and old chestnut songs. He had a couple of vocalists and usually an accordionist who would do solos. For years after he died, the band kept going and the program was carried on Public television. I think they still do repeats of the programs. Many people like this type of bland music, with many of the "golden oldies." Think of Roll Out the Barrel, Just an Irish Lullaby, the Maine Fight Song, I'll keep Loving You, etc., etc.
Stilly, I had already posted Don Ho's site and the price for his dinner show. If you really like that stuff, he gives $10 off to internet customers. There are many more interesting Hawai'ian musicians and singers. The Society of Seven is one. For almost the same price as Don Ho, visit the Polynesian Cultural Center on the east coast.

re Lawrence Welk:

This stuff probably won't be on a web site. He had a German accent, played the accordion, and ran his program like a small time talent show. Imagine the most conservative grandmother possible; then imagine her favourite Saturday night TV music program. A quartet of teen girl singers, a fat piano player (Professor 'Big' Tiny Little) to play the pop tunes of her youth, that sort of thing. The best part was a basso profundo who ocassionally got to do solos -marvelous and rare. This man made money hand over fist. For about 4 years he owned the Beatles catalog (worth millions). I read once that he made over a million for his annual New Year's Eve Program. PM me if you aren't fed up yet.

He's the first one to admit that he's crap, however he still makes money and still can pull the crowds in after all those years of performing.
he's says he's not a great singer, but he's doesn't care because look at the money he's making.
If he's that bad as some people make out then why is he still going.

And how many of today's performers would turn up at your door and ask for a cup of tea.
Because these two women said to him once, to come round their house for a cup of tea, and he did.

So that's entertaining the crowd.

The sheet music I have for "Tiny Bubbles" has the second bridge this way:

So here's to the ginger lei
I gave to you that day.
May it keep you safe while I'm away.

It also has some of the lyrics in Hawaiian. I can post them if anyone wants them.

Genie

(This is a popular song at retirement homes, partly because it's an easy sing-along. Most of the residents and staff know the words, and if they don't, it's one of those songs with enough time between lines to call out the lyrics beforehand.)

Guest (4:44PM), if you're going to recommend Hawaiian music, you can do a lot better than the Society of Seven. For those who will be visiting, the Honolulu Weekly (click on "The Scene") has a pretty good selection of local music, dance, theater, and art. There's more to Hawaii than Waikiki! GUEST, are you local, or a recent visitor?

Aloha,
Mark

GUEST, lots of pronoun hes too far from their modifiers in your posts. Which "he" owned the Beatles catalog for four years, Lawrence Welk or the basso profundo? Which one of those two made money hand over fist? Also, I hope that by conducting a search and posting the results that you don't confer any kind of "fan" status on me regarding either Don Ho or Lawrence Welk. "If you like that sort of thing" needs to be directed to the thread in general, not to me specificially! I have as much interest in these two as I have in the plantar warts on my right foot. Perhaps somewhat less (on the performers, not the warts, that is!). Those tricky pronouns. . .

To Cluin

The Canadians are a lucky race of people if you ask me. Try to keep it that way - it's in your own interest.

To Guest (Sydney Devine fan)

At least you have the good grace to apolgise. And SD is not the first to say he's crap - I am and I've never heard him say it once in fact.

What other entertainer would simply turn up at someone's house for a cup of tea? A sad one in dire need of the publicity I would have thought - and Daniel O'Donnell of course.

He entertains in the same way as Eddie the Eagle Edwards did. His audience speaks for itself - over 70's one step away from (or already in) the retirement home. Glitzy Elvis style suits does not make him an entertainer. I accept he is a Scottish Institution - sorry - he should be in a Scottish Institution, with memories of Harry Lauder and what he did for our image.

We are never going to agree on this one I'm afraid. All the best.

Davebhoy

The Event Finder I linked to is more complete that the Honolulu Weekly, which mostly features stuff that is available on the mainland. Their attitude towards Hawaiian music ("duh"), when reviewing Kapono's is typical (admittedly tourist-oriented).
Mark, the average visitor is not looking for theatre, dance, etc. The Society of Seven is eclectic in performance, but it is the type of light entertainment most Waikiki visitors look for. 98% never get more adventurous than visiting Ala Moana Shopping center.
Events with good Hawaiian musicians and dancers never seem to coincide with a visit, good guitarist-singers never seem to have a regular venue and tickets for the best events must be arranged for well in advance.
On the Big Island, outside of the usual at the larger hotels, little can be found. If there is any activity at local watering holes, it is difficult for a tourist to find. Most performers hope that their cds and tapes will bring in some income (and performances at the rare auditorium shows). Hilo, now a sleepy backwater compared with its tourist heyday, has a little activity that may be found by asking someone at Univ. Hawaii Hilo (I remember a few years back, a friend in Hilo told me about the opening of a Safeway(?) store; everybody in town turned out for the big event of the year).

Out of the many thousands that come, thankfully few are willing to spend a weekend evening at the Pau Hana on Molokai (or similar) listening to a local group of Hawaiians playing for locals. Tourists are told to stay away from this and similar places. Personally, this is my idea of a good place at which to enjoy a very quiet holiday.
