Subject: Lyr Add: THE CRAZY GOAT
From: Ooljana

Here's another version of this song in English:
THE CRAZY GOAT

As I went west to Droichead Uí Mhórdha
Pike in hand to join the work-band
Who should I meet in a foggy canyon
But a tawny goat and him demented?

Ñhorus
Ailliliú, puilliliú, ailllilú the goat's gone crazy

Away we raced through bog-myrtle
And battle raged along the thickets
Among the clumps he struck a blow
And down upon his back I landed

There wasn't a passage, gap or chasm
That he didn't charge, hoping to maim me
But the greatest leap of all he saved
For the sheer cliff-lace of an Fhaill Bhreac

A great guard there was in Baile an Róistígh
And he raised a troop with a mind to beat us
But his arse got stabbed by the he-goat's horn
And his brand new trousers were all in tatters

In Daingean Uí Chúise as evening fell
The parish priest was out to meet us
And he said it was none but the devil himself
Who went the road on a crazy he-goat

A Meithil(pronounced MEH-hill) is a group of workers composed of neighbors bound by hospitality to work on a neghbors farm. I believe the tradition is native to Kerry and may have died out by the present time.

I think Eddie Macken was a show jumper, not a jockey.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MAD PUCK GOAT - AN POC AR BUILE
From: Jimmy C
Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:33 PM

Here is the English version, taken from Comic Songs of Cork and Kerry by James Healy.

THE MAD PUCK GOAT - English translation of AN POC AR BUILE

As I set out with me pike in hand
To old Dromore to join a meithil, (Work gang)
Who should I meet but a tan puck goat
And he roarin' mad, in ferocious mettle.
CHORUS: Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu ta an poc ar buile
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu ta an poc ar buile

He chased me over bush and weed
And through the bog the run proceeded
'Till he caught his horns in a clump of gorse
And on his back I jumped unheeded. CHORUS

There was ne'er a rock with no passage through
Which he didn't jump, and me like Eddie Macken*,
But when he leaped clean down Faill Breach,
I felt like a load of old wet sacking. CHORUS

When the sergeant stood in Rochestown
With a force of guards to apprehend us,
The goat he tore his trousers down
And made rags of his breeches and new suspenders. CHORUS

In Dingle the following afternoon,
The parish priest came to call us to order,
And he swore from the pulpit each Sunday in June
'Twas the devil on the back of his old grandfather. CHORUS

* Eddie Macken was a famous Jockey

Dan ... here ye go

This is the version sung in English by "The Bucks" on one of the finest albums made by the Kavana stable "Dancin' to the Ceili Band".

As I set out for Dromore town
Pike in hand to go a-workin'
Who did I meet on the hillside
But a tan puck goat stone mad for scrappin'

Aillilú etc

He chased me through the hedges and ditches
Around the bog in frenzy runnin'
But when his horns got caught up in gorse
I leapt on his back despite his buckin'

Aillilú etc

There were no rocks or gaps between
He didn't jump the puc ar buille
And me hangin' on to save me life
When he jumped off the Faille Brice

Aillilú etc

The garda sergeant at Rochestown
Called all his forces to surround us
But the goat stuck both horns suas his hón
And gobbled up his brand new trousers

Aillilú etc

In Dingle Town the next afternoon
The parish priest addressed the meeting
And swore it was The Devil himself
He'd seen ridin' on the puc ar buille

There's an English version on The Bucks' (Ron Kavana/Terry Woods/Paddy Keenan and a host of others) album "Dancin' To The Ceili Band".
