Date: 8th, 9th and 10th February 2002
Venue: York House, London Road, Stony Stratford, Bucks
Cost: £15 approx, which will include some kind of (probably vegetarian) nosh on Friday pm, somewhere to sleep, somewhere to sing and play, and breakfast basics. I have ordered a barrel of Frog Island Shoemaker but am not allowed to sell it. Consequently I will be depending on your good nature to cover the cost, a couple of quid each for those partaking? Other beverages: We'll work out what everyone wants and go foraging. Or bring your own supply.

There will be an admin meeting on Saturday 10th in the a.m., chaired by Gareth. This will be to discuss fundraising issues.

Never mind the rest I'm sure someone mentioned the word massage. If Reading FF can have a hugging workshop why don't we have one for backrubs. Jude

Jude, if you do bring the carriage whip, then perhaps Linda might offer something more invigorating than backrubs !

After all if Micca wants a dusky maiden covered in tomatoes and mushrooms (even if it's only on one side) then things are definitely looking rather kinky.

I'm looking forward to this - not long to go now. I'm worried about reports of flood warnings on the River Ouse - my underwater singing is rather poor. I tend to flounder all over the plaice in my bass voice when I do my sole rendition of Nearer My Cod To Thee, especially if I have a frog in my throat.

I thought Dai had already told us the main charge for the weekend was going to be £15 per head (bodies get in free I think). He hasn't revealed the price of the BEER yet though - or for that matter the culinary delights (which probably won'y affect me as I'll cook in the caravan).

Linda and I will bring ingredient for plenty of mulled wine if people are interested - contibution can go to Mudcat.

Frog Island 'Shoemaker', if I remember correctly it's about 4.5% - very tasty, drinks well ;-)

Frog Island Brewery is in Northampton, and makes excellent small-batch beers each with an *ahem* unique character. They're all very distinctive and different from your usual stuff... (whatever that is)

I'll second the nomination of Bill Sables even if he is wearing his anti-gravitas device.

As I've contributed a couple of songs to previous threads about this Gathering, in view of the flooding threat here is yet another "Eddystone Light" parody.

My father was the Keeper of the Buckingham Light,
And he slept with a mudcat one fine night.
From this union there came three -
A catfish, and a mudlark, and the other was me!

Chorus:
Yo! Ho! Ho! as we sing and booze,
O for a life on the banks of the Ouse.

One night as I went fishing in the brook,
I cast my rod, and I sank my hook.
A voice from the river shouted "Ahoy!"
And there was my mother with her new toy boy.

"O where are the rest of my children three?"
My mother then she asked of me.
One got pickled in a goldfish bowl,
The other plays for Tottenham and keeps the goal.

Then a salmon leaped over the weir,
I looked for my mother but I couldn't see her,
Still her voice came echoing back through the night -
"To Hell with the Keeper of the Buckingham Light!"

I suspect that if everyone donates the usual price of a pint of beer each time they have some ( or maybe slightly less as it's wholesale) there'll be a slight profit for Mudcat funds. It worked when we had weekends away at college.

Dai has already said that if all partakers donate a couple of quid a peice the cost of the beer will be covered. I assume we are still having a raffle for Mudcat funds.

Dai

My last trip to Stony Stratford was about 10 years ago and very fraught because it involved a) early morning driving from Saffron Walden the morning after a big birthday (my big birthday)party, b) driving via Milton Keynes without decent signs for Stony Stratford when all the roundabouts looked the same c) eventually finding the A5 (hooray, even though it was going in the wrong direction) and d) squiring a dance team (Flowers of May)on a Stony Stratford Morris Day of Dance when I had a bad knee and couldn't even dance.

Any helpful hints about how to find all you Mudcatters after driving up the M1 from Harrow on Saturday morning, and where to leave the car so that it can be driven back to Harrow later on Saturday (so that I can keep my assignation with Cllr on Sunday after a lot of delicate negotiation with my mother on the subject of birthdays) would be much appreciated. Er, when was the admin meeting expected to finish, approximately?

Kitty

PS Sorry Gervase, I see you're only down for Sunday. Can't go on not meeting like this - hope to see you in Sidmouth.

Noreen (and the rest that are staying at the Bull): that bit of iffy etymology is a very good example of the thing itself! Every pub called the Cock or the Bull claims the story as its own. Just enjoy the beer and pretend to believe everything the locals tell you.

Pubs called the "Cock", at least round here in Essex and Hertfordshire, are usually at the top of a hill. In olden days of coaches and waggons, a horse was kept at the pub to be used to assist the regular team in ascending the hill. The coach or waggon would then stop at the pub to unharness the "cock horse", and probably refresh the passengers.

Or so it says in the "Cock" at Henham!

Looking forward to refreshment (liquid and acquaintances) at Stony Stratford!

Alan

BTW Reminds me of one small "spontaneous" demonstration held outside of the US of A Embassy in Grovsnor Square in the early 1970's on a Sunday.

Police (Uniformed) Inspector with loud hailer - " Its nearly 7 pm, and the Pubs are about to open. Would you mind dispersing so my lads can get a drink in too!"

And the crowd dispersed !!!

Costs

Bob Adams has worked out what he will charge us:

At the 'community group rate' for the main hall, coffee bar and kitchen, including:
  • Use of all car parking and grounds
  • Use of 'music room' as a dormitory
  • light use of upper floors (staffroom, snooker room, quiet room)
  • use of soundproof studio for late night music
  • use of available equipment(mini marquees, staging blocks, PA, lights, electric piano, electric bass, drumkit)
  • access to the internet and photocopier
And a 10% discount 'for bulk purchase' ;-) comes to:

£550

I think this is very reasonable. It works out at approx £14 per person for the whole weekend, pro rata for 'day boys'... I suggest sticking with the £15 I guessed at and setting up a central 'friends of mudcat' account if we decide the Gareth's suggestion is a good one... (more of this on Saturday 9th).

Please please please PM me or post here with concerns and questions. The facilities on offer really are brilliant, it's a great town and you'll all love it. I'm a litteel concerned that people seem to be balking at the pathetically small monetary outlay we're asking...

I don't think anyone is actually balking, Dai, more just a bit confused at what is being charged for what. Some of us have to pinch those pennies damn hard and the luxury of leisure pursuits unfortunately come last down the list of priorities when there are mouths to feed and mortgages to pay.We all appreciate your hard work in getting this organised and I expect it will be a great weekend.Thank you.

I too am booked into the Bull ! Could it be possible that it will become a girlie enclave? I may bring a frock!!!

See you, I hope.

One thing, after my experience at Buntingford a couple of months back (a pretty little posh people's town, where some of the local lads gave my car a serious kicking when I left it parked outside the scout hut in the course of a singing weekend), is the parking likely to be reasonably safe? (For the sake of people whose cars are still relatively undimpled.)

If it's £15 per head, how much is it for the rest of me? Anyway-The celiedh band needs participants, so all you who sing 98 verse songs, can give up for a while (put nicely-shut yer gobs and dance you buggers) so the dancing (for which you are invited to be participants of) can take place, and so that there are people to dance etc.

Do we need to bring amps etc?

See you next saturday, just as the sun is rising!

Giok you obviously drink in the wrong places. We can have a weekend ticket for Cleckheaton folk festival including camping and entertainment for £20 so I'm sorry but I do not accept that £15 is reasonable and most definitely not pathetically cheap!!! Also it has taken until a week before the actual date of the event to come up with a final price!! I'll leave it to those who obviously have more money than sense to enjoy their weekend. We will enjoy ours but not there.

gareth-hamsters are 2.50 Each and sheep are around 20pounds (Market price for Whole live lamb)
Although I expect the price of hamsters to rise dramaticaly in the next few weeks-I spotted this in the newspaper today
HAMSTER FIGHTS BACK!
Police were today hunting kidnappers who stole a primary school's pet hamster-and demanded a million pounds for its safe return. The gang left a ransom note demandind the cash for the return of Harri the hamster to Corris Primary School in Machynlleth, North Wales. In fact the rodent was left in his cage outside the school, leading staff to believe Harri fought off his attackers.
Headteacher Olwen Griffiths said "Harri does bite if you startle him and there was blood on the cage so maybe he bit whoever was taking him, and it gave them second thoughts"A spokesman for North Wales Police confirmed that scenes of crime officers were combing the area for evidence. He added "We are taking this matter very seriously"
Extra vigilance is obviously advised, I just hope this is not the first of a spate of hamster kidnappings.john

£15 is not cheap to sleep on a floor but we won't just be using York House to sleep, will we? We'll be there from early Friday evening until late on Sunday night enjoying the warmth and shelter. We'll have use of a hall for dancing, various rooms for singing and playing and car parking included.

All this is at a commercial rate I presume? My local recently charged me £15 an hour for use of their one function room. Multiply that by say 50 hours and York House is beginning to look very cheap.

No doubt you can go to a folk festival for as cheap as £20 but economies of scale kick in there, there are often grants available and publicans willing to let rooms for free in anticipation of increased sales.

AS for the price being announced late wasn't there a warning SEVERAL weeks ago that it might come to £15 each?

Point of interest: Dai mentioned the figure of £15 in the last thread on 23rd Jan, and if you look back through the threads there were indications back towards the beginning that the cost was likely to something around that. To a certain extent until Dai knew how many people the cost of hiring the place was to be shared between (and the idea was to cover the cost of hire) he would not have known how much each, we needed to pay. In my area the cost is about that of 6 or 7 drinks and probably less than the fuel or other transport costs for most of us to get there. I wouldn't like to think how much time and effort this has taken to arrange but I'd like to thank Dai for doing so. Jude

PS It looks hopeful that we might be able to get there after all but not till Sat afternoon

In the Yorkshire Gathering 2002? thread, Les from Hull writes:

It's a shame about the ceilidh, but I don't think that, as a group, we're committed dancers. Last year, I think we had more in the band than there were on the floor! But I did enjoy the playing

Well, are we having a ceilidh or not? What about a session?

Actually the celiedh at the last Yorkshire gathering was very well attended. Les actually says-he enjoyed the music There was even a morris team-well,longsword team and people from the village, and if non mudcatters are interested then they are able to come arn't they?

I wasn't telling people to dance-I was INVITING them if they wished. I myself don't dance-but I love playing the tunes and I don't want to get contentcious, but is there going to be a place for intrumentalists to play and have a session or not? Not that I mind singing, and have been known to scare cat's away with my voice, but I enjoy playing along.

Is it a mixed affair or a singers weekend?

I have had more subtle invtations than "shut yer gobs and dance you buggers".

I'm hoping there's going to somewhere in York House for a session and somewhere else for a singaround at the same time, so everybody gets to do what they want.

And the times in the pubs should work out as a bit of both singing and playing.

I don't doubt that there will be plenty of musicians for a session (at York House and/or at a local pub) but experience elsewhere has suggested that us Mudcatters are more into singing and playing than dancing. I will certainly be interested in joining a session myself, if you will allow a novice to have a go!

As stated somewhere in the maelstrom of threads about this subject, York House is just to the south of the turning for Clarence Road (off London Road) if that helps. A useful landmark is the Peugeot dealer just next door. The innovative bods who run the place (York House that is) have come up with the great idea of marking the building's presence with a big sign, reading 'York House'.

Dear Friends,

Apologies to all as Lady McMoo and I won't be able to make Stony Stratford due to a a bit of a current squeeze financially (Patricia was made redundant a few months ago but those bills just do not stop!). I had hoped to combine it with a work trip but that just won't work my way on this occassion.

This is a great shame as we were looking forward to a great weekend of music and to meeting friends old and new.

I hope everything is a resounding success and take my hat off to Dai and his helpers for what looks like a great bit of organization. We will be seeing some of you I know at the forthcoming Brussels EuroGathering on 3-6 May and we are looking forward enormously to that.

Have a great weekend!

Best regards,

P.S. Apologies to Lady Penelope for not being able to join you in that skinnydip! (8>)
