Tom Petty, Steve Earle. I've heard Dave Van Ronk (many times, as I took guitar lessons from him,) Doc Watson, Paul Geremia and John Hammond, and that's the only way I ever heard them. I kinda thought this thread would be people you'd like to hear with just a guitar and a mike who don't normally perform that way... Like MTV unplugged, here in the U.S. of A.

I think I'd let go of the mic.

I'd prefer just a guitar and a voice.

Are we allowed dead people?

I saw Richard Thompson do an acoustic show, just guitar and mic back in 1983 and found it mesmerizing. Since then, when I've seen him, it's been in bigger halls and his guitar has a series of pickups for some effects. The impact is not the same to me. It still sounds great, but I miss the guitar sound through the mic.

All of the above except for Madonna and Tony Blair. I might toss in Andy Irvine.

Tommy Emmanuel, Chet(God rest his soul) Atkins, Stephen Bennett, Roy (his too) Rogers (but maybe not Trigger), Beppe Gambetta, Laurindo Almeida, Les Paul (the guy who invented recording in stereo!)& Mary Ford, Johann Sebastian Bach(performing his own works for guitarro &/or lute of course), Charro, who is a terrific guitarist in the "classical or flaminco" style,. . . well, when you get these folks on the bill, I'll add more to the list.

I once saw The James Gang, The Moody Blues and Dion in a concert. First was the James Gang Last was The Moody Blues. Each behind mountains of electrical power. Dion came out with a D-41, bentwood chair, glass of water and then he stole the show.

Tom Smothers, Roy Rogers, Glenn Campbell, Eric Frandzen, Albert Lee, Jim Burton.

I've seen them all accoustically, Roy on video tape,

Tom and Roy had the best rhythmic sense. Albert Lee was the most inventive, Glenn Campbell was the cleanest, Eric Frandzen was the most solid finger picker of the bunch. But Jim Burton was the of all worlds.

I would like to see Susan Tedeshi do a solo act. I have seen her with her band a couple of times but an intimate show would be wonderful. I would also like to see her and Jonny Lang do something together. Those two have so much heart, together they would rock me all night long. I just saw Leo Kottke do a guitar and mike in a small theater, and as always he was brilliant and mesmerizing. I would see him again. Rustic

"Are we allowed deasd people" - I get this vision of this corpse propped up by the mike and the guitar, and an audience waiting expectantly...

One that did happen in Glasgow last week and I couldn't get to -

Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle, John Prine and Elvis Costello, all onstage all acoustic, reportedly a classic all-time best.

Cheers

Steven

I've seen the ones I really wanted to - but the one I'd have loved to see was Uncle Dave Macon. I know - he played a banjo - but I would have loved to see him.

Well, I heard Dyer-Bennett at New York City's Town hall with just a guitar (no mike). I'm still impressed.

I saw Stan DeWitt at a Dave and Busters in Orange County. He did a song called 'lonesome picker' that I'll never forget. He would be a good choice and I'd also like to hear; Sting Paul Simon Carlos Santana Dwight Yoakam – "give a little bit…give a little bit of your love to me…"

Right, Dick! Richard Dyer-Bennet. Most folkies don't like him because of his obvious classical training, but there was a man we could all learn from. I've seen him five times, four times in sizable theaters and once outdoors. Just his voice and his classic guitar. No mike. His voice was small compared to other classically trained tenors, but it could ring all the way to the back wall, and every word was crisp and clear.

I know of no other singer who evoked the spirit of ancient minstrelsy the way he did. A man I truly admired.

Don Firth

I saw Segovia about forty years ago in the Festival Hall, London. He didn't need a mike.

Wearing nothing but a guitar and mike? Hmm, that's a tough choice... ;-) Or a Mudcat Calendar entry anyway.

And I'm getting visions of a young sound tech turning round to his mum and saying "I hear dead people"...

What can I say, too much caffeine, not enough sleep, it does these things to a person.

Graham.
