Does anyone know when fine tuners first appeared on violins? Thanks!

I have a photo of a 1786 Scots Viola d'Amore which appears to have a fine tuner on the high string. Another photo, undated, of a REAL Strad that definitely has a tune on the E, but nothing to say if it was original or added later. Thought I had this somewhere in the books, but can't find it.

Hey Sorch, I damn 'cited. Tonight I get my hands on a super fiddle that I can buy very reasonably. It's allegedly special, so I will PM you with any provenance that comes with it. I've been getting along really well with Bill's loaned fiddle, and I've found it so addictive that I've spent entire weekends, day and night, playing the durned thang. It's been about 8 months now since I first launched into it, but I've been at it for literally hundreds of hours.

Hi Skip,

Are you going to bring it to Mooland to annoy Eric with?

I've contacted our local luthier to ask. He was classically trained in luthiery and may know the answer.
