Lady John Scott.

There is a nice short biography of her in Angus Calder's "Gods, Mongrels and Demons" (2003). He mentions in passing that she almost certainly wrote "Loch Lomond", but covered her tracks very thoroughly with misinformation to make it look as if it was older.

The Hudson Reformed Church had a choir director back in the '50's who was killed in an auto accident on the way home from our evening service one Sunday. "Think On Me" had always been his favorite and he had sung it at many of our Catskill Glee Club and Treble Choralier concerts.

Nan is very much alive and will celebrate her 91st birthday April 28th. Attached is a link to a photo of her in 2002 at age 82. I recommend checking out her many available video clips now at YouTube!

I had the pleasure of accompanying Nan Merriman to Flagstaff, Arizona, from Phoenix to present a recital on the "Community Concert Series" at Northern Arizona University in the mid 1960's. "Think on Me" was the closing song included as encores after the performance. Nan was a wonderful lady and I was always grateful to her for introducing me to this song. I say "was" because I believe she is no longer with us.

I had the privilege of hearing on tape from old time radio Evelyn MacGregor sing Think on Me on the Sunday night NBC show the American Album of Familiar Music. I have been looking for the words of this lovely melody since I saw it on a British show called Highway several years ago. This evening I found a lovely rendition of it sung my Isabel Baillie on You Tube featuring a 1941 recording. She certainly had an outstanding voice.

Lady John Scott died in 1900 so there was quite a bit more after 1882.

There is a lovely photo of her in her papers in the National Library of Scotland, the only picture of her I've seen - she was horribly self-conscious about her appearance and hated having her picture taken (unfortunately it's completely unreproducible, very dark sepia with a lot of the visual information in the reflective patina). She's an old lady sitting in front of a flagrantly fake classical landscape holding a Spanish guitar, with a shy and gentle smile. I've never read anybody with a bad word to say about her.

I've read some of her letters to and from C.K Sharpe when she was a young woman. She comes across as desperately enthusiastic and naive about Scottish history and tradition; it's a bit like some Mudcat threads when a likeable young newbie joins in, with Sharpe doing the same sort of thing as Malcolm Douglas.

She was extraordinarily good at distance running in her earlier life. I can't imagine what sort of clothing an aristocratic Scottish woman of the period would have worn to do it.

Her mother, Helen Wauchope, was second daughter of Andrew Wauchope, Esq. of Niddrie-Mains, near Edinburgh. The subject of this notice married, on the 11th March 1836, Lord John Douglas Scott, second son of Charles, fourth Duke of Buccleuch. Lord John died on the 3d January 1860. The whole of Lady John Scott's musical compositions have been published by Mr C. Lonsdale, 26 Old Bond Street, London, by whose kind permission her Ladyship's songs are subjoined.

My version have five thinks at the end, and the lyrics posted above have six.

To fit words to the tune, starting with " when griefs are slightest, Think on me, Think oh think on me, Think, Think on me."

the first me has two notes

the next think has three notes

the last note hangs in the air on the first verse. for the second verse I go down to the tonic to resolve it.

The MIDI is very slow, a little too slow, but that helps in learning.

This song brought me to the Mudcat in 1999. I was searching for the lyrics, and it was not in the database, nor did anyone seem to be familiar with it. I finally located sheet music to the song from the Willis Music Company. It use to be included regularly in encores at recitals performed by classical vocalists. Two artists that I know included this in programs were: Ann Merriman, who was a member of the Bach Aria Group in the 60's and Thomas L. Thomas who starred on the Firestone Hour on radio and TV for several years. the song:
