Subject: RE: Step It Up and Go- Lyrics From: Dale Rose Date: 14 Mar 98 - 02:09 AM Well, I had it completely typed in, then the PC rattled, and the whole thing disappeared just as I was putting in the last html paragraph tag. That will teach me to do it in the word processor, I suppose. I will do it again later when I am less aggravated. If someone else has it, go ahead. The version I have is by Black Cats and The Kitten, 1940, but it apparently goes back to Blind Boy Fuller. |
Subject: Lyr Add: STEP IT UP AND GO (Black Cats & Kitten)^^ From: Dale Rose Date: 15 Mar 98 - 09:20 PM This is a bit out of my territory, but since no one else came up with it, and I had it, here it is. It is on the 4 CD set, Roots N' Blues, The Retrospective, 1925-1950, Columbia 47911, 1992. I recommend it highly for its coverage of white and black blues source recordings, over 100 songs total.
From the notes: Black Cats and The Kitten present an early example of what would shortly come to be called rhythm and blues. This is the kind of music being performed (and later recorded) by such as Willie Dixon and the Big Three. It is interesting to note that the track, associated inextricably with Blind Boy Fuller, lists his manager, J. B. Long as "composer."
Step It Up And Go
I had a man, he was little and low
Now the front door's shot, the back one, too
I got a man, he's long and tall
Me and my baby walking down the street
If you see my man, tell him I said, hurry home

Subject: Lyr Add: BOTTLE UP AND GO and BORROW LOVE AND GO From: Brad Sondahl http://www.camasnet.com/~asondahl Date: 17 Mar 98 - 09:59 AM Leadbelly recorded several versions of the song, BOTTLE UP AND GO, and BORROW LOVE AND GO: Mamma killed a chicken, thought it was a duck, Put it on the table with the legs sticking up. You gotta borrow love and go. You gotta borrow love and go. These high powered women sure gotta borrow love and go. Told my baby, the week before last, Babe I think you're going just a little too fast, You just borrow love and go, etc. She may be old, about 40 years, She ain't too old just to shift them gears, She just... That's what I remember off the top of my head...
