Does anyone know the lyrics to this old number? I think I have the title straight.

Thanks, O.T.

Well, I had it completely typed in, then the PC rattled, and the whole thing disappeared just as I was putting in the last html paragraph tag. That will teach me to do it in the word processor, I suppose. I will do it again later when I am less aggravated. If someone else has it, go ahead. The version I have is by Black Cats and The Kitten, 1940, but it apparently goes back to Blind Boy Fuller.

This is a bit out of my territory, but since no one else came up with it, and I had it, here it is. It is on the 4 CD set, Roots N' Blues, The Retrospective, 1925-1950, Columbia 47911, 1992. I recommend it highly for its coverage of white and black blues source recordings, over 100 songs total.

From the notes: Black Cats and The Kitten present an early example of what would shortly come to be called rhythm and blues. This is the kind of music being performed (and later recorded) by such as Willie Dixon and the Big Three. It is interesting to note that the track, associated inextricably with Blind Boy Fuller, lists his manager, J. B. Long as "composer."

Step It Up And Go
as recorded by Black Cats and The Kitten, 21 October 1940 vocal by Valda Buggs, others unknown (two guitars and a bass, and at least two male voices on the part in parentheses)

I had a man, he was little and low
He used to love me, but he don't love me no more
You got to step it up and go (step it up and go)
Yes, step it up and go (step it up and go)
Just keep your mind on it and step it up and go

Now the front door's shot, the back one, too
The blind's pulled down honey, whatcha gonna do
You got to step it up and go (step it up and go)
Yes, step it up and go (step it up and go)
Just keep your mind on it, honey, step it up and go

I got a man, he's long and tall
You wouldn't think he had no sense at all
But he can step it up and go (step it up and go)
Yes, step it up and go (step it up and go)
Just keep your mind on it, honey, step it up and go

Me and my baby walking down the street
Killing everybody but the chief of police
You got to step it up and go (step it up and go)
Yes, step it up and go (step it up and go)
Just keep your mind on it, honey, step it up and go

If you see my man, tell him I said, hurry home
I ain't had no lovin since he's been gone
You got to step it up and go (step it up and go)
Yes, step it up and go (step it up and go)
Just keep your mind on it, honey, step it up and go

Subject: Lyr Add: OIL IT UP AND GO (Charlie Burse)
From: Jon W.

I suspect there are a great many versions of this song out there. Here's one I recorded off the radio a few months ago--not quite sure of all the lyrics

OIL IT UP AND GO
Charlie Burse(sp?) and the Memphis Mudcats

I've got a freezer, I used it before (?),
I was thinkin', what'll make it go?
I better oil it up and go,
Better oil it up and go,
No use to monkey around with it, oil it up and go.

I started downtown, the other day,
I met a chick, funny that way,
I had to oil it up and go,
Had to oil it up and go,
No use to fool around with it, oil it up and go.

I don't chew tobacco and I don't dip snuff,
Put the stopper on the bottle, I've got enough,
I got to oil it up and go,
Got to oil it up and go,
No use to monkey around with it, I got to oil it up and go.

Gal in town that says "Uncle Man (?),
Can't stay long I got a bad old man",
Bottle it up and go,
Oil it up and go,
No use to fool around with it, oil it up and go.

Subject: Lyr Add: BOTTLE UP AND GO and BORROW LOVE AND GO
From: Brad Sondahl http://www.camasnet.com/~asondahl
Date: 17 Mar 98 - 09:59 AM

Leadbelly recorded several versions of the song, BOTTLE UP AND GO, and BORROW LOVE AND GO:

Mamma killed a chicken, thought it was a duck,
Put it on the table with the legs sticking up.
You gotta borrow love and go.
You gotta borrow love and go.
These high powered women sure gotta borrow love and go.

Told my baby, the week before last,
Babe I think you're going just a little too fast,
You just borrow love and go, etc.

She may be old, about 40 years,
She ain't too old just to shift them gears,
She just...

That's what I remember off the top of my head...
