Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: Clinton Hammond Date: 01 Feb 02 - 09:00 PM Killing Popups is MURDER... And then people cry and rend their clothes when their favourite web sites vanish, because they couldn't/WOULDN'T indulge some advertisements that would have generated the $$ to keep those sites open... One or 2 adds on this place and it wouldn't be the financial, "hole-in-the-water" that Max makes it out to be... |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: GUEST Date: 01 Feb 02 - 09:34 PM Popup Killer killz em dead. Maybe somebody will explain something to me. Other than turning the thing off, which is a bother, what do you do on sites like cnn where every third link opens in a new window?? |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: NicoleC Date: 01 Feb 02 - 10:13 PM I use WebWasher -- works great and my ol' fashioned dial up connection is actually used to download what I look at, not ads. Now, why should *I* pay twice as much for a faster internet connection so I can download more ads for stuff I don't want anyway? It doesn't work on Flash ads though, which are the REALLY big ones, but I'm not sure it would be able to tell the difference between a Pepsi ad and a web site intro. The biggest bonus, though, is preventing the collection of surfing data and personal information that get you "harvested" and on every spam email list out there. Oh, and it's free for personal use: www.webwasher.com
Guest #2 -- These software programs don't kill opening new windows, they typically filter out content from the big ad delivery services, and then you can usually customize the settings to turn off the service for particular sites or to add ads to the filter list.

Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: Mark Clark Date: 02 Feb 02 - 12:14 AM Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the so called popup killers do nothing at all to modify the behavior of sites that inflict the popups on us. What they do is place a watcher inside your PC, between your screen and your Internet connection. All the popups are still sent to your PC and still waste the same bandwidth they always did, it's just that you don't see them pop up anymore. The down side is that the watcher uses additional local PC resources reviewing everything that comes down the wire to see if it's a popup window or not. - Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: NicoleC Date: 02 Feb 02 - 02:22 AM Mark, I guess it depends on the specific software package and the technique they use. I agree that it would be pretty silly to load the data and only block the user from seeing that -- but even that would be preferable to some idiot monkey running back and forth across a flash neon banner! Ow, my eyes! However, WebWasher uses a virtual proxy server which blocks the http connection with the incoming content BEFORE it goes through your connection. (The offending data does make it through your hardware firewall or router, though, I think.) It's specifically designed to help companies reduce bandwidth costs. It also has the effect of dramatically increasing your security. |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: IvanB Date: 02 Feb 02 - 11:04 AM Mark and Nicole, you're both right: Popup Killer does merely kill the popup windows but doesn't save any bandwidth whereas Webwasher actually blocks access to the well known servers of ads. I use both - since some ads still manage to get through Webwasher, Popup Killer will usually get those. It's not the use of bandwidth that offends me so much as the visual assault afforded by many sites. I tend to agree somewhat with Clinton on this - many sites continue to be available because they offer popup advertising. However, the actions of a few in going overboard with the numbers of popups served makes me tend to kill them all. It's a conundrum... |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: Clinton Hammond Date: 02 Feb 02 - 11:51 AM " many sites continue to be available because they offer popup advertising. However, the actions of a few in going overboard with the numbers of popups served " Like everything else in life, the best way to lodge a complaint to a site you don't like is to NOT GO THERE! And believe me, there is not a single site online, rife with pop-ups, whose content cannot be had from many other sites, I'm sure... It's JUST a pop-up window... close it if it's that bothersome.... that way the site makes their $$ off your visit, and you don't have to look at them for very long... |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: wildlone Date: 02 Feb 02 - 11:59 AM Clinton, some sites use "agressive" popups that will keep opening faster than you can close them. I have found a few while searching the web {none porn} and if you go from a search engine you do not know what the site is like. They have even crashed my browser dave |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Iv'e lost my Popup Killer From: Clinton Hammond Date: 02 Feb 02 - 12:24 PM So, go to your system tray, select "Show Desktop" and close all the windows open... then Then don't go back to the place ever again... But I have not seen a non-porn site that uses pop-ups that badly... Mind you, I try not to look at many non-porn sites on the net in the first place... there doesn't seem to be much point, given the average lack of content! LOL!!!!! I've also found that surfing with Java turned off helps quite a bit with popups and a worse offender, voice banners "I have a secret website that's only for YOU..." GACK! |
