COUNTRY GIRLS

As I strolled down O'Connell St.
The day being warm and grand
I met Sin,ad she asked me trade
I'm a singer in a band.

Chorus
And the way ??? my dear Annie
Oh! you country girls can dance the polka.

I took her to McDonald's sure
I didn't mind the expense, I bought
Her chips and coffee and only cost me seventy pence

Chorus
I asked her out to Sandycove
We travelled out by dart
Please say you'll go, if you say no
You'll surely break my heart.

Chorus
When we arrived at Sandycove
We strolled along the strand
She told me of her parents back home
As we were hand in hand

Chorus
I asked her occupation and
Me question seemed afraid
She looked at me Ramble man
I am a chamber maid

Chorus
With my hand upon her shoulder
And the other on her knee
Me boys me thinks another few drinks
With me she might agree

Chorus
When we arrived at Rathmines Road
We came to her front door
She says fare thee well me Ramblin boy
You'll never see me no more

Chorus
But I caught the bus to Dublin saying
Fair deuce to my dear
No more I'll chase those country girls
I'm sticking to Lager beer

Chorus

(Recorded by Dublin City Ramblers)

I never saw or heard this, but it looks just like a parody on "New York Girls" which can be found in the DT. I guess it has the same tune. Doesn't it, Ezio?

Wolfgang, you're right. The 'N.Y. girls' and 'Country girls' share the same tune. Thanks.

It's likely that the missing words are Away, you Santy; My dear Annie.

The original commemorates a period when the polka was the rage, having taken over from the more austere waltz. "Polka" became a buzzword (much as "organic" is now" and polka popped up in some surprising contexts. The one that survived is, of course, "polka dot"

Long time ago in another life we used to dance a Norwegian dance to a very similar tune. I don't know the correct spelling but phonetically it was called "rack see ack"

It was one guy dancing with two girls.
