In Dreams

Written by Roy Orbison
Recorded by Roy Orbison (1963)

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle star dust and to whisper
"Go to sleep, everything is all right"

I close my eyes then I drift away
Into the magic night, I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you.

In dreams I walk with you
In dreams I talk to you
In dreams you're mine all the time
We're together in dreams, in dreams

But just before the dawn
I awake and find you gone
I can't help it, I can't help it if I cry
I remember that you said goodbye

Too bad it only seems
It only happens in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams.

I don't think so Murray - "In Dreams" starts out something like "A candy coated clown " and Dream starts out just like that. "Dream, dream, dream, When I want you - In my arms - When I need you - And all your charms - Whenever I want you all I have to do is Dream, Dream, Dream - - "

Thanks Justa - Not what I was looking for though but I certainly appreciate the words to this one. Doc Watson rerecorded this song "Dream" a while back also.

Subject: Lyr Add: ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM (Everly Bros.)
From: Justa Picker

Okay I believe this, is what you're looking for.

ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM
Boudleaux Bryant, Felice Bryant

INTRO: Dream, dream, dream, dream,
Dream, dream, dream, dream.

1. When I want you in my arms,
When I want you and all your charms,
Whenever I want you, all I have to do
Is dream, dream, dream, dream.

2. When I feel blue in the night,
And I need you to hold me tight,
Whenever I want you, all I have to do,
Is dream.

BRIDGE: I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine,
Any time, night or day.
Only trouble is, gee whiz, I'm dreamin' my life away.

3. I need you so that I could die.
I love you so, and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do
Is dream, dream, dream, dream, dream.

REPEAT BRIDGE AND VERSE 3.

[Recorded by The Everly Brothers, 1958.]

Sorry Steve, but if you want to do it right, you'll have to get a Gibson and a set of Everly Strings. (:<))

Actually, this song was another in the long line of hits for the Everly Brothers written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. "All I Have To Do Is Dream" was a number one hit on the country, pop and R&B charts. Along with your remembrance of Roy's version, over the years it reappeared on the charts in hit versions by Richard Chamberlain (believe it or not), the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bobbie Gentry, Glen Campbell, and even Andy Gibb and Victoria Principal. I guess a good song transcends all.

The Bryants were one of those simply fantastic teams that appear every now and again and when they started writing for the Everlys, everyone's careers took off......each had a "feel" for the other. I like the Everly version, but then again, I love that blood harmony that is so exact and perfect. I have never found a place on record or heard them anytime when they are not precisely together, not even a nanosecond difference in time........Amazing.

Roy had one that went "Dream, dream, Baby...how long must I dream?" Maybe you mixed it up with the Everlys.

While the mixup would be natural and that could be there Leej, it is true that Roy had a hit with it too as did the others I listed. Matter of fact, JP pulled the lyrics from an Orbison site.......or aren't you reading the thread? .......**ahem**...........LOL............(:<))))))

Yes I did get it mixed up. It is one of those songs that came from another time in my life that was relatively uncluttered with craziness. Or at least songs like this. I just had Roy's name in my head when I remembered it.

Jan's son is getting ready to launch out into the world and he is the success story of the century in my opinion. When he came to live with us he was on the heels of a suicide attempt, lots of drugs, criminal behavior, you name it this young man had it. In the past year and a half he has held the same job for a year, been clean for a year, purchased his own car, and has his head screwed on very nicely.

I wanted to do something for him as a way of showing him my appreciation for all of his hard work - and we live on a working ranch so there is a LOT of work - while here. He has really gotten into music and Jan and I had bought him a cheap acoustic 3-4 years ago that he has been playing. Last night I took him over to Palmer's Music and bought him an electric guitar, strap, cord, and an older Peavey Amp that was in like new condition. He didn't have a clue why we were there and the next thing he knew he owned this fine electric. The store owners, myself, and Jake were all in tears. They all knew of his story and struggles. One of those defining moments that makes being a human being really worth while.

Well I'd never played an electric so I got to play it later - and I remembered the tune "Dream." So I decided to learn it - Long story and I apologize if I got off task here but it is a story worth sharing I think.

Well hell now...........It ain't right to make Ol' Spaw tear up here you sumbitch.............Wonderful Steve........Once in awhile the magic works. I wish I had more good stories to relate about our foster kids sometimes, but when it goes well for one when it shouldn't have.....it makes up for a lot of other griefs and failures.

You're one helluva' guy Steve...........Proud to know you.

Spaw, I thought I had heard every song Roy Orbison had recorded, but I have no recollection of him ever recording this song ...despite what the site says (and I see they have "Album unknown".

Do you actually remember him having recorded this?

I seem to remember it Murray, but then again, maybe I'm wrong. I had a site where the song had the listing of recordings but I can't find the damn thing.......it's in the history thing somewhere, but it beats me where .... I got too much crap in the hisory folder........... I don't recall the Andy Gibb or Victoria Principal versions either though but they had dates as to when they were done. Sorry Murray....I could be wrong and it sure as hell wouldn't be the first time!

Actually, Spaw, you could be right, This site lists Orbison as having recorded it on his "In Dreams "album in 1963.

But since he doesn't appear ever to have released it as a single (or a B side), then I was right too inasmuch as he didn't ever really have a "hit" with it ....

Well Spaw - I'm back being bleary eyed again - just got an e-mail from my partner Jan - And Thank you for your nice compliment - I appreciate it very much. Wanted to shre with you what Janet had to say -

Hi Hon -- I Love You and wanted to let you know how MUCH I appreciate what you did for Jake yesterday. It's one of the best gifts I've received seeing someone (especially my wonderful partner) be so generous and loving to another human being, who just so happens to be an extension of me .... my son. Thank you so very much! It was a very wonderful thing you did, and I'll never forget it. It still brings tears to my eyes. It's been a wild ride at times these last few years, but we're making it through the rough times and having many good times too. Keep your spirits up about work Hon -- we all have our purpose in life as well as our cross to bear. We've all made our mistakes and we all need forgiveness. You are my Knight in Shining Armour -- Thank You. ILY

Certainly made my day today

Steve

Subject: Lyr Add: DREAM BABY (HOW LONG MUST I DREAM?)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 08 Feb 02 - 10:23 PM

The song LonesomeEJ was thinking of is this one:

DREAM BABY (HOW LONG MUST I DREAM?)
(Cindy Walker, 1962)

Sweet dream baby!
Sweet dream baby!
Sweet dream baby!
How long must I dream?

Dream baby, got me dreamin' sweet dreams the whole day through.
Dream baby, got me dreamin' sweet dreams, nighttime too.
I'll love you, an' dreamin' of you, but that won't do.
Dream baby, make me stop a-dreamin'. You can make my dream come true.

Sweet dream baby! (Dream baby, sweet dream baby!)
Sweet dream baby! (Dream baby, sweet dream baby!)
Sweet dream baby! (Dream baby, sweet dream baby!)
How long must I dream?

[Repeat]
