Subject: Sheet music for 'Swallowtail Reel'

I'd like to play the "Swallowtail Reel" on the fife, and tried to figure it out from a recording I have - but to no avail. There was no sheet music for it available on the Web either, so if anyone of you could scan it and send it to me, I'd be very happy!

Thanks, and have a great Sunday!

ABC is in The Fiddler's Companion (CLICK HERE), with a lot of information on the tune.

Thank you, but I've never used this ABC stuff before, so please don't laugh at the next question ;-) Where can I get the program? And will it give me the sheet music as well - or does it just play the tune? (Sorry for being so ignorant...)

Maudlin, don't feel bad for asking! You don't need to learn ABC for this (unless you want to.)

Go to the link at JC's that Roger provided above: if you click under MIDI it will play the tune for you so you can hear it through your computer speakers, and if you click under GIF it will give you the sheet music on your screen, which you should then be able to print out.

Hope that helps. If you need anything more, just ask.

BTW, I know this as the Swallow's Tail, and it will be called that in some collections.

Noreen

I think it is quite useful to be able to deal with both MIDI and ABC. It is true, as Noreen has said, that JC's site (which is the best starting point I think) does offer tunes in a variety of formats but some sources will only offer one format. Getting suitable software also gives you the advantage of being able to edit and produce your own tunes. Again, as Noreen says, you don't have to learn but I think, in time, you may be quite pleased with the added benifits you gain by learning.

Oh and BTW, I learned this reel together with the High reel from a Dubliners record - one of the first recordings I heard that got me wanting to learn the tenor banjo - I still can't play like Barney though!

If you pm me, will be happy to snail mail the dotz. ABC is very useful, but if you don't have time to learn/aquire the software, let me send you a hardcopy.

Aaaaaaaah, The Dubliners In Session by any chance, Jon? My first copy of that LP became warped and unplayable from too many hours of constant play on a hot Dansette. When I bought a replacement copy, first thing I did was tape it, so that one is still playable.

YES Snuffy, that was where I got it from! All that remains of my copy is a "back up" tape I made. I played it a lot!

A By The Way.....at JC's place, if you click first on the GIF file, wait for it to load, then scroll down to the bottom it will say "Return Tune in Other Formats". Click on MIDI; wait for the player window to come up. Minimize that window (the - sign), and you can watch the sheet music as you listen to the tune.
