Subject: Good News? Macs & PalTalk

I had heard a number of times that a "PC Emulator" should be able to turn a Mac into a PalTalker. So I wrote to an adventurous friend about it who Knows Things Mac. She WAS able to get PalTalk going in her Mac, via the emulator.

She's not a Mudcatter, though-- she isn't going to be our Mac Help Department-- but hopefully this should be enough to get someone around here, on a Mac, far enough along that THEY can become that helpful person around here!

So if you have a Mac that fits the specs below, I double-dawg-dare-ya to be the first MacMudcatter to show up in PalTalk on Sunday! *G*

Below is our correspondence. Take the best, leave the rest, and don't shoot the messenger.

~Susan

====================================================

A number of Mudcatters have been frustrated about not being able to use their Macs to participate in PalTalk, an online microphone system for using the computer as a phone. We do song circles using it-- international folkies picking and wailing away online. But the PalTalk site says it does not work with Macs. It has often been suggested that a Windows emulator can make it work, but as far as I know none of the Mac users have ventured it.

Would it be possible for you to look at the PalTalk site and see if an emulator will actually work?

Well, I have a program called Virtual PC version 4 on my 3-year-old blue and white G3 Macintosh. I just started up Virtual PC (into which I have installed Windows 98, though you can run any version of Windows in it that you want), and I went to the PalTalk site and signed up. I didn't have any pals, of course, but it was easy to install and sign up. In the sound testing area I had no trouble recording sound and hearing it back, and at the end, it gave me the little dialog for finding Pals and Groups on line, so it looked like I could have gone through it just fine.

It [seems that it] works on a Mac IF you run the Windows emulation program.

I think it's safe to tell your friends to get Virtual PC if they have fast enough computers to run it.

They can download a trial version of the software at:

CONNECTIX. (Look in the lower right part of the front screen).

Just be sure people check the system requirements for running Virtual PC 4, so they don't try to run it on a 40-MHz machine, or something, and fail. My machine is 400 MHz and Virtual PC runs fine on it, and one advantage of running Windows on a Mac is that Windows boots in a few seconds.

Also, Windows 95 runs faster in emulation than Windows 98 does, so someone could call Connectix and say that they want Virtual PC version 4, and want it shipped with Windows 95 installed. PalTalk will run in Windows 95.

Also, be sure people don't buy Virtual PC 5. I hear that it is in beta, and is quite buggy. Get version 4.

Norton1, there are some old threads about Macs-- maybe you or someone could PM the Mac-users listed in them to let them know?
