Being just after Valentine's and all, I got to thinking about my very first love....Michael Eccles....I was seven and he was nine....he had a face that looked like Join the Dots, what with all the freckles. He beat the tar out of some pretender to my hand and was made to stay after school. That was when I knew it was LOVE!!

He let me play with his tin soldiers.....more than my brothers ever did, the swines!!I wonder what happened to him....I wonder if I remember him more because he had a sister called Jennifer ( old Donovan song)...I wonder if anything is ever so exhilarating as the first time you make a connection to someone other than your family?

Do you remember your first love?

Ah Morticia, such a sweet BS thread! Her name was Mary Wambach I was all of 10 years old as was she. She was blonde with blue eyes. Kind of like Heidi (You know Johanna Spyrl's children's classic. In those days, I would have died or killed for her to hold my hand. Ain't young love grand? Kindest regards, Neil

The first beyond the playmate stage started in first grade and went through about fifthe when we moved to Columbus. I saw her again here and there but it was never the same............

Janice Neel. Skinny and tall. blonde....but real damn smart. We were always in competition for grades and test scores but we hung out a lot and most of my male friends at age 8 couldn't understand why I'd want to go play with a "girl!" Frankly she was a helluva' lot more entertaining to be with unless I was wanting to play baseball. During summer we'd ride to the pool together and probably one day a week was spent doing things with her too. Lasted til I moved......I alwyas wondered what would have happened if we had stayed.

Well....my first thought was I haven't had one.....and then casting my mind back quite a bit I remembered James McGuigan who was my next door neighbours grandson. We were of an age(4) and he used to let me play with his gun(it was a cap gun and his prize posession) when we played cowboys and indians. And best of all we used to pee on his grandmas chrysanthemums .....hehehee Boy did we get into trouble for that.

It was some girl in first grade, if you include unrequited loves, but I can't recall her name. Then there was Diane Powell in 3rd and 4rth grade, a farmer's daughter. She was a couple of years older than me, and I worshipped her from afar. I went on worshipping various other schoolgirls from afar for longer than I would care to say...

By the age of 20 I could have written a PHd in unrequited love, in fact!

My first actual love was a Lithuanian trapeze artist in a travelling circus. We met in Elko, Nevada, took a train to New Mexico, and spent three months in the desert, painting watercolors and herding goats. It was unforgettable. Then she took off with a carpet salesman from Fresno. I wasn't surprised, but I was a bit hurt. She took all the paints with her except for a tube of alazarin crimson, I think it was. I used it to paint a picture of the Taj Mahal, which I later sold in New York...but that's another story. :-)

Grade 5, age about 10? Frank Starnes......gorgeous, dark skin, dark eyes......but he was in love with my best friend Linda..........oh well. There is probably still a graffito on the garage wall where we lived then.....L.E.+F.S............her name, not mine. I doubt if she ever knew I was "in love" with him. Still wonder what happened to him.

Been awhile. Been away. Been busy. Back for the moment.

I have 2 or 3 "first loves". I know it sounds weird, but just listen. I think it may sound familiar to many.

I had my first crush on a boy in 5th grade. When he kissed me on the cheek, I about lost bladder control. Then there was my first teen love. I chalk that one up to hormones alone. He smelled nice, and was probably pumping out some serious pheremones (not to mention he was "older", and something of a status raiser). Then there was the time in my 20's when I fell so hard I thought I had died and gone to heaven. He was one beautiful man, and probably, I loved the package more than the person. When he left, it was pretty devastating.

And then, there's my honey. He's my best friend in the world. He makes me laugh, he tolerates my bad moods, he consoles me when I am down, he helps me figure out answers to tough questions, he does Daddy duty with my daughter even though she's not his, and he stays up all night with me reading to me or whatever will help when I am sick even if he has work himself the next day.

He's my first real love.

Sheila Kennedy, She was a few years older than me and we worked at the same camp in the summer of 1964. I was dumb struck when ever around her so she never had a clue. Tall slender Black hair and blacker eyes. She could sing quite well as I recall. Every one was trying to be PP&M or The Kingston Trio in those days.

1st child: the boy next door to us in a Denver suburb, Ricky, we were both in 3rd grade . . . 1st teen: Danny gave me my first kiss, at 14. He was 17, lived around the block. We had little more than that kiss, he was drafted shortly thereafter, we wrote every week, and he never came back from Viet Nam. Neither did my heart.

His name was Paul, he was my best friend's brother. I was 13, he 14. Our first kiss, on the front at Weymouth, posh end, under the tennis courts, made my insides loop the loop, my heart almost stopped and I got all hot and bothered. He had reddish brown hair, freckles, and hazel green eyes. He had one of the first skateboards (shows how long ago this was !!!) and was fantastic on it. He loved watersports and went to a public school!!

I spent almost all summer with him, and got to first base under the pier (before they blew it up)..... Come November, and his parents decided they didn't like me, so we had to split. I remember spending the whole day on the beach sobbing my eyes out.

We met up again about 5 years later. And it was still all there! The loop de loop, the heart stopping and the hot and bothered bit (but I knew what the hot and bothered bit was all about by then!!), we 'talked' all day, until he had to go meet his mother. Two weeks later he was dead, drowned in Weymouth Harbour in a windsurfing accident, 3 months short of his 20th birthday.

I have his letters still, and a couple of really bad photos, and yes, the innards still go loop de loop when I look at them. Some things you just never forget.....

My first real love was called Angela. She left for the U.S. over forty years ago, when still in her early teens. Yesterday I met her again for the first time since then. It was if we had only parted weeks ago. We got on like a house on fire. Both of us were happily married (me until recently, my wife passed on two months ago)but I think discovered that we are still good friends after all the years.

The first one where I realized those pangs were difficult to deal with happened at age 13. Lynn was a PK (preacher's kid) and lived in a different suburb of Columbus and we had met several years before at various Youth Group functions and summer camps. That was really the only times we saw each other, but you remember how quickly things happened as a kid? We hit it off right away.

Lynn was a "tomboy" and loved doing all the things that girls didn't always do. Her Dad retired from the ministry to open a camp that the churches used for summer camps WAY out in the middle of nowhere. Her family stayed there all summer and returned to town in the school year. We'd been seeing each other and were an "item" at camps and weekend functions, but neither of us ever really noticed or thought of it that way......we were buddies. Then in the summer when I was 13, her Dad asked my parents if I could work for him for a month or so at the camp. We talked it over and I was allowed to go. He paid me for the work and Lynn and I got to spend a lot of time together....lots of laughs and lots of fun. But we were both still ignorant of the normal "desires" and were buddies until the evening we were up at the pond used for swimming. I had been thrilled to death to be driving the tractor to mow and we 'd finished the big field and then done the lawnmower work close around the pond.

Lynn says, "Let's go swimming." I said we'd have to be back for supper soon and by the time we went back and got our suits and came back, we'd be about out of time because the house was a good way from the pond. Lynn said, "We don't need suits.....c'mon...." And we did......I think it was the first time I had ever felt those particular feelings and it was both exciting and frightening as hell. Another of those feelings that you can never repeat, like Christmas morning when you're 6.........We didn't have sex but it led to a lot more and heavier nightly sessions.

Pretty much then through high school, Lynn and I would still be an item at camps and weekend things, but we knew it now. Great thing about those camp/weekend things was they never really interfered with the traditional day to day local boy/girl relationships.

Its easier when you're 4 years old. James' mother had a breakdown and his father ended up in prison. His grandparents moved so we lost touch. About 20 years ago he turned up on the doorstep..all booted and suited but by then I'd moved but my mum was still there. My first boyfriend was a guy I met at the folk club...we went out a few times...I really liked him..a perfect gentleman. Found out why....he was bonking his mates wife...

Judy Hyland. She sat next to me in first grade. I still remember the design on her metal lunch box. A boy and a girl walking hand-in-hand, the girl carring a lunch box with the same picture.

My love life has been a wreck since I took up with that Lithuanian Trapese artist I met in the desert. Ever since I lost my job selling carpets she's constantly throwing it in my face that she should have stayed with that painter guy, whoever the hell he is. He can have her for all I care.

Byron, the boy down the street. He was 9 and I was 7 and I loved him truly. Spent every possible moment with him and we were already making plans to get married and have a bunch of children when we got really old, like 16 or 17. I couldn't figure out why our parents were so weird about us being together -- my sister had a boyfriend and no one was weird with her. I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was this undercurrent of tragedy and caution, both from my mother and from his. One day after we'd been boyfriend/girlfriend forever -- which, when you're 7,is probably a few months -- my mom took me aside and explained to me that Byron was retarded, a term I'd never heard. She said that I'd continue to grow and develop, but Byron would never get any older in his mind than he was right then.

I was shocked speechless, but I wished they'd never told me. I would have figured something out eventually, and I still had a couple of years I could have loved him. As it was, it made me see him differently, and to feel sorry for him and buy into their tragic vision of things, rather than our happy-go-lucky little kid love for each other.

Here's a song for my first & only real true love who still holds my hand & heart.

It fell all on a bright spring morn
As the sun rose or'e the bloom
The geese & woodcock shook the dew
The fish flew through the foam

I spied a lass she struck my heart
My eyes saw nothing more
It was then that I was lost in love
For she's the lass I do adore

I approched this fair for a word
But no words could I speak
The drops of sweat fell from my brow
My arms & legs did quake

My heart was pierced I could not breath
Sound gone forever more
I knew she had my heart & soul
For she's the lass I do adore

She asked if I would walk with her
through the misty morn
She led me past the ancient oaks
Or'e the hills & far beyond

She lightly took me by my hand
My feet felt no forest floor
My heart it soared or'e the land
For she's the lass I do adore

Among purple heather we sat down
the ground did seem to moan
Branch & bough all seemed to bend
As bluebells blew like horns

She left there among wild flowers
As the stars they brightly shown
So amazed in wonder there I lay
For she's the lass I do adore

The years have past before my eyes
Since that day in early spring
Still the view is fresh & fair
And still the smell so keen

I've wondered far & traveled wide
In the hopes to see once more
The lovely maid that laid me down down
For she's the lass I do adore

Barry

leprechaun, it's time to drop the charade. (See my previous post.) It's no use pretending any more. When I dumped you ten years ago for that gawdawful mime (I plead temporary insanity), and you started dressing and singing like Wayne Newton, and you built that shrine to me with that weird inflatable doll and the tire swing, that was when you should have started to get a clue, eh?

I had a series of admirers between the ages of 5-7, but deemed them all unworthy of my attentions....then I had a crush on a total space-shot named Chris who through the random cosmic influence of alpahabetical order sat in front of me in junior high school & never had a clue about my burning passion.

Then there was my REAL first love, who tortured me on & off from ages 16-19 or so....the good part was that it was through him that I eventually met my husband, for whom I believe *I* was the first love!

My first quasi-adult love experience (trans: adolescent hormone trip), was with a 13 year-old boy who was hijacked by said hormones. I was 12, and was just pre-pubescent, and was therefore clueless as to his motives.

It was summer camp, and he was bunked in the boys' cabin adjacent to mine (the cabins were paired off, boys' and girls', and shared a common "front porch"), and for the three weeks we were there, he would not leave me alone -- comparing my beauty to Rachel Welch, saying I should never wear my glasses because they hid my eyes, etc., etc.

Finally, during dinner dance celebrating the last day of the camp session, he kept asking me to go steady with him, until I finally said "yes" just so I could get enough peace to eat my mashed potatoes and corn. Later, he asked me to kiss him on the lips, so I puckered and he started chewing my face... When I complained, he explained the whole concept of a french kiss.

I slapped him.

45 minutes later, he wanted to break up.

After that, all through my teen years, I never told any boy if I liked him romantically, for fear of putting the same kind of pressure on him that that one boy put on me.

Then, a few months ago, my father, who was on the board of my old high school, attended an anniversary of my school. While there, the mother of one of my classmates asked him how I was doing, because her son always asks after me, that he has always liked me...

(19 years later. Who knew? Apparently, I'm not the only one who was keeping quiet)

I asked my dad if he gave my address to this woman to pass on, so I could tell him myself how I am doing. "I didn't think of it," he said.

Arrrrggghhh!!

:::Sigh::: Ya either gotta laugh or cry. When I make up my mind either way, I'll let you know. ;-)

I Relate to RangeRoger's Reminiscence Re the Last shall be First. Certainly my last is the best. Only she's in Manhattan just now & I ain't. Mah.

However. 3rd grade. Betsey Brown. Round, cute, brown hair, lovely smile, sparkling eyes, winning laugh. Veryvery smart; I never had a chance. Took my Home Planetarium to her house to show her the 40-watt heavens projected upon the ceiling above, and with the oul' constellations, just like me, a-climbing up the walls. Now Hawking says (well, his voicesynthesizer does) that the universe's structure may be like the shape of a finite saddle but Ohhhh, that magical night the whole of the cosmos was a cubical bedroom unbounded in 10 dimensions bordering on Infinity, with the only illumination the G.E.-powered Belt of Orion twinkling athwart the closet door. / Diddeneenyaaah Cabbage&Spinach, she got bored with me lecturing (now can ye imagine *that*?? Jeez) after 15 minutes & turned on the lights; and we're talkin' the THIRD GRADE here annyway, whaddaywant? / But I loved her from afar through 6th grade nonetheless. Then my family sent me awa' to a school out of town. All boys. (Hi, Horse!)

Navajo and Andy are just faded memories, while Martin remains my faithful true love to this day.
