Can any of our nautical types recommend a good biography of John Paul Jones? I see lots on offer on the 'net - but have no real idea of their merits.

Martin: I can't think of one off hand but if you type in Naval Institute you should come up with the naval institute website and they shuld have just what you're looking for. Most of the stuff they do is rather scholarly being written for the Naval Academy traioning syllabus and War college courses etc but it's usually a pretty good read in spite of that. Look for the one by Lincoln Lorenz, originally published in 1943 by the U. S. Naval Institute. I believe it has been reprinted in pb. "John Paul Jones, Fighter for Freedom and Glory."

Great minds think alike Martin. Fortunately for you, I was already married to Bonnie when I first saw Josephine or you would have had a battle.

What I really mean to say is that I had the author's name of a John Paul Jones biography that also dealt with John Barry but... I seem to have lost the paper on which it was written. If it surfaces, I'll let you know right away.

You might try the Morrison book, which I thought pretty good when I read it twenty years back. Jones is not my historical era so I really can't give an INFORMED point of view. (I've just looked for my copy and can't find it, but the bibliographic is Morison, Samuel Eliot. John Paul Jones [1747-1792]: A Sailor's Biography (1959). Time, Inc., New York, 1964.) Try it anyway.

There are used copies of the Lorenz bio listed by dealers associated with the abebooks.com listings. I prefer local dealers myself, but seldom can find what I want.
