Subject: Anything going on in Shropshire?
From: GUEST,Salty Dog

I'm spending a bit of time in Shropshire and looking for somewhere to go where the company is friendly, the beer is good and the music sessions convivial. Where should I go, where will there be warmth and welcome, who should I talk to?

Try the Boat at Jackfield, Telford

Info and sample music at http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/247/the_boat_session_musicians.html

Think it's a Thursday night if memory serves.

Try the Charlton Arms - a Good Beer Guide pub - by the river in Ludlow on the third Friday evening of the month for an "Irish music session with some English songs". p> In eithteen hundred and sixty one, roll Alabama roll ...

Have reread your request and I think you mightenjoy the Red Lion in Market Drayton on a thursday. Definitely warmth (a coal fire),conviviality etc. good mix of songs and tunes. no super musicians seeing how fast they can play jigs and reels, so very unthreatening for anyone drifting in and fancying joining in.

Ellesmere used to have a lot going on, but I'm not sure of the situation these days. Just over the border in Staffordshire, the Anchor Inn at High Offley, near Woodseaves was once the place to go to sing, drink good beer etc. Shrewsbury has a fair amount of music & song going on. Good luck with your trip to Shropshire, it's a lovely county.

John

yes definitely go to the Anchor at High Offley. Music is highly intermittent but it's always worth a visit. Easier to find by boat than driving. And if youre looking for it from Woodseaves, remember to start at the Staffordshire Woodseaves, and not the Shropshire Woodseaves which is quite different, though only five miles away. Confused? You will be. If you're in north Shropshire, try slipping over the Cheshire border and try the Lord Combermere in Audlem on Mondays, i think the session's still going. Good hunting

Yo Ho Ho Salty Dog - Mr Red is a mine of info-he mentions The Buffalo in Clun (which I think is in Shropshire - Oh yea Shropshire Lad Clunton Clungunford Clun etc) and also The 6 Bells in Bishops Castle- is that the same place as the folkie fest in May? That must be what Trevor was talking about. That should be a nice place to go-they brew beer there! Near there is The miners Arms at Priest Weston and they have a mini fest around Easter. Is that when you're going there?

Hope the wind stops blowing by then!

"Mr. Red" is someone i came across in "song writing" go have a look- he seems very technical. I'm not very good with "big" words but he does have an interesting site with info on various places to go in UK. He's also linked to that F. weekend in Bishops Castle.

There's a session in BC tonight (Friday) by the way, at The Six Bells.

I wouldn't ask too many questions about Sally though!

Thanks for the continuing info, but WHO IS SALLY?

I stuck my head in The Six Bells the other night and only saw three women who may have been her. One had short grey hair and was singing with a grey-haired bloke with a beard, one was a blonde with a nice voice who sang 'The Dutchman' and the other was a tall woman with reddish hair, who didn't sing and who seemed to be with a bloke wearing glasses. Which one was the famous Sally, Watson?

By the way, I like the nom-de-plume; Watson in Shropshire - brilliant, Priceless even.

Greg, your earlier mention of the Anchor at High Offley brought back lovely memories. I was last there 20 years ago. A truly excellent pub that I have camped behind many times, including two Christmases and my stag night.

I gather Olive and her daughter are still running the place. It's only 50m from here, I really must make the effort and re-visit.

Thansk for re-kindling the memory.

John

Hello Salty, you were looking for the wrong place last night - we were in The White Horse, and a good session it was too.

As for the saxophone, no it wasn't me - each to his own I reckon.

BTW, Sally must have been out of the room when you 'stuck your head in' 'cos she certainly doesn't fit any of those descriptions you've given.

Well Mr.Salty Dog must have found another "Clun" - I was in Clun Shropshire last night and I was at the White Horse, not the White House. It was an extremely good session and full of musicians such as Rees Wesson ( from Joe Le Taxi) Chris Yorkie Bartrum (also Joe le Taxi) , John Hayward, Harriet Bartlett, Pat from Cukoo Oak, some of Rapsquillion and the Lemonberries and I think Sally was there too. The locals loved it and want more next week!

Does all this talk about a festival in Bisops Castle mean that we are all going to visit Shropshire in May. If so it sounds like we are in for a good time with plenty of lemonade being drunk. What can we drink when the lemonade runs out? I hope Sally and her co-conspirators have an alternative ready for us. See you all in May

There is no better alternative in BC than the brews from The Six Bells and The Three Tuns, both of which are venues over the weekend.

In fact Nev at The Six Bells is doing an ale for the event - 'Fingerpickers'. Doesn't it just roll off the tongue -"A pint of 'pickers please".

Let us know that you're coming though so we can put the kettle on - have a look here, or contact us with this.

Herga Kitty
just had e-mail from a guy who can't see www.bcfolkweekend.co.uk, he and the library both have firewalls, do you access from work through a firewall? If work and huge network then assume yes!
To anybody who cannot see the site, do you access through a firewall or am I making too big an assumption.
Now the biggie - is there any advice I can pass on to the webmaster and is their ISP & webspace at Freeserve a factor?
cresby.com still works and gives most info.

I have spent the afternoon at Priest Weston Folk Weekend and the atmosphere was wonderful-some brilliant songs/singers and loads of great tunes-and you should hear a lady called Ann sing the blues! So how many 'Cats were there? Shropshire is very beautiful especially on a sunny spring day. If there are any other folk weekends in Shropshire it has to be worth a visit. The ale was good too!!!

There's a Sesh/singaround in The Minor's Arms in Priest Weston every 1st Wednesday of the month (found it on Mr. Red's 'cresby.com'(haven't worked out how to do the blue clicky thang yet!) - so you could go see how crowded it gets. There are quite a few in Shropshire I see.

Now then Mr Stephens, I telephoned the gaffer at The Red Lion the other Tuesday 'cos I was at a loose end, and he told me that 'he didn't know whether there would be any music tonight because it depended on whether the bloke turned up....'. What's that all about then?

In't Joe le Taxi brill. I went to their gig that was part of the little do at Priestweston over the Easter period and thought they were really good. See them if you can, one and all. I've at last got a flyer about the Bishop's Castle event and their due to play that so I'm going. And I've eventually met the lovely Sally Lemon (although she didn't twig it was me. She can crush my citrus fruit anyday!

Chris Bartram's session at the Breidden Hotel, Middletown and a singers' night at the Woodbridge in Coalport tonight, and I think there's a session at the Globe in Coleham, Shrewsbury
Irish session at the Boat in Jackfield and something at the Swan in Frankwell tomorrow.
On Friday there's the Unicorn Folk Club at the Bell Inn, Tong, a session at the Six Bells in Bishop's Castle and possibly one at the Charlton Arms, Ludlow.
I don't know of anything on Saturday... Will that do for now?

Yes Lucy Ann, Pete Grassby's Band is playing at our folk weekend in Bishop's Castle (24th-26th May) It's his birthday this weekend and although he's not a 'Catter I'd still like to wish him a happy 50th birthday. I dare say there are a few people out there who know Pete and have probably bought something from his stall at festivals up and down the land. He's the guy with the musical instrument stall and the cat called Orka and can be seen at Upton on Severn Festival May day Bank Holiday weekend.

I feel obliged to apologise to all concerned, re playing saxophone in the six bells ,since obviously my enthusiasm for the instrument runs ahead of my abilities. There is a point to discuss, I feel about this. I started playing folk 36 years ago, and during that time I have sung ,played guitars, in various tunings, taken up the accordeon, changed to 1 > 2 > 3 > 2.5 row melodeons, and played as many different styles as have taken my fancy, well enough to play on local radio, and guesting at folk clubs in my time etc. etc. For reasons unknown to myself I feel that this instrument is the one I wish to express myself on at the present time, because it can be more chromatic and expressive, and given time and patience I confidently expect it will become less and less a racket. The main catch is the decibels, and musical ideas running ahead of technique. Oh for a standard English session a la old swan type tunes where I could just have a good time belting out standards, and allow others leeway to experiment too. Thanks to those of you who do put up with me ,your tolerance is much appreciated. I have much less difficulty playing my Bb saxes which seem to play in tune without problems, and I fit in reasonably well in Bandamania -run by Sue Harris, and the band in question is playing at Wheaton Aston festival this weekend. Its always easy to stick to what you do best, but musical lives have their own tides and have to grow . Through playing this particular instrument I have learned to read and write music, and deepen my appreciation of music generally. Charity begins in the session. Dont be musical snobs, come on over and meet me. I can provide ear plugs!

Well said - and I for one am glad that musicians of your calibre turn up at sessions like The Six Bells.

Mind you, it is a bit difficult to sing along with, and, tell me, is it true that another regular, who shall remain nameless but is a bit deaf, once stuffed a packet of crisps down the bell of your sax, or is that just a rumour being spread by a known stirrer?

I think Bill's hearing aid was feeding back, and he managed a basket from about 6 feet, he wont manage it with the soprano, Im a bit worried about getting clonked by something harder than crisp packets, and maybe I should insure my teeth under my instruments policy. Good old Bill he smiled as he did it and they crinkled in G, perhaps toilet paper would produce a Kazoo effect.

during easter, i spent a fabu;ous weekend at the miners arms in priestweston

i'm informed that there'll be another folkie gathering w/e there in sept.

i'd thouroughly recommend anyone looking for a great w/ends folking about to attend. it was brill [+ free!]

the crack on the campsite was great too

the only downside was that the camping field is very slopy & by the time i arrived there, all the flat bits were taken

i didn't notice the full extent of the slopiness until the early hours of sat am, when having been in bed for only about ten minutes, the bed fell over & threw me out.

i then realised that the gound was sloping in two different directions!

giving up on the bed, i laid my mattress on the ground & got in my slepping bag & managed to get a few hours sleep.

when i woke, my feet were freezing, in the night, mattress, bag & me had slid down to the bootom left corner of the tent & my lower legs were sticking outside the door!

after this, i had to secure evreything to the ground with tentpegs

nevertheless all this aside, i had a great time- superb beers + brekkies in the miners arms, wonderful music 'n songs

i'm really looking forward to the next one!

mr happy

Yes, Miners Arms do is usually pretty good, as is the regular session on the first Wednesday of the month. We're really lucky around here to have lots of opportunities for music and plenty of talented players and singers to listen to.

Must just say that the Bishops Castle Weekend is on a different site - nice and flat but still about the same staggering distance from a good pub!

I agree though, 'shirtyness' in manner is not helpful, from anyone.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be shirty, just cryptic like your post seemed to me.

I opened a thread which looked marginally interesting (we live in Cheshire, so go to events in N. Shropshire), saw it was mostly 6 years out of date or more, clicked on the only new post and was puzzled that I might have missed something.

Reading through some of the older posts I can see some that out of date, the session at Audlem is now at the Shroppie Fly on Mondays, very inclusive, we go to it occassionally and find it varied, according to who is passing through on their boats. The Market Drayton session has changed place and day more than once, not sure when or where it is now.

Don't know why it posted a blank message just now.
