If so, did you notice that the lowest pitched instrument in a Brass Band is called a Bombarde?????

I didn't see the episode, although it's a programme I sometimes watch. I thought a Bombarde was French or perhaps Breton. I wonder what it was doing in a Brass Band?

Yes - when that guy was listing the instruments of a brass band in descending order of pitch he placed the trombone lower than a euphonium, surely incorrect ? And I don't believe I ever heard a bombarde in a brass band.

There's a bombarde that is the lowest stop in some organs, to be distinguished from the instrument played in French and Breton traditional music whciuh si a sort of shawm. But in a brass band?

Bugger the brass band, did you see the sword lock on't wall of Aidensfield Arms? Had the pleasure of drinking in that pub (real name forgotten) with Goathland Plough Stots. And they were all piss heads, too.

Standard trombone is pitched at TENOR level. Bass trombone is deeper, I am not certain whether it would be deeper than Euphonium. Below the Euphonium are the E-flat Bass and the lowest is the B-flat Bass.
The Bass is great fun to play, although I spent most of my Brass band days on Flugelhorn.

Dead Horse: "piss heads"? surely not, they are professional drinkers, and a grand lot with it!

I've never managed to verify it but the story used to be that when invited to a do they put up two lists; those who were going for the dancing, and those going for the drinking. Sometimes they could send two sides, sometimes only one...guess which.

Word was some years ago the TV company tried to build a set in the studio, and the Stots took out copyright on their lock...

A Bombardon in Eb is an old name for an Eb bass or Tuba.
The Bb Basse is known a Contra-Bass on the same era of brass band music

As a 12- 16 year old, a few+ years ago I found that taking a bombardon on a tramcar or bus was a very anti-social activity. My education in bad and abusive langauage was completed at that time, from fellow passengers, conductors and especially from conductesses whose vehemence at the sight of a small boy with a very large instrument was to be heard to be believed.

Well theres a few things cleared up. Kenny B - I have a friend, he is 61 now, and in the late 1950's he played tea-chest bass in a Skiffle group and he told me that he was always emarrassed as he had to cart it around to gigs on public buses.

Back to the *Ploo Stots*. Yes a grand bunch, but still piss heads. Which, when you come right down to it, is what it's all about. Get the dance over quickly and carry the lock into nearest boozer. And if it's a good'un, stay there. That, to me, is traditional sword dance.

I can remember singing in a session at "The Goathland" back about 67-68 when I was working in the NE - I think that (the late) Fred Ingano had something to do with it. Since that is precisely the sort of period that "Heartbeat" is set, perhaps the series should have some folkies in it.

The Longsword lock has been on the wall in "Heartbeat" for as long as I can remember - mind you I tend to associate Rapper more with my time up there.

Does anyone remember the Kirklevington Ceilidhs on the NW corner of the moors at about the same time ? - I had some great nights at them.

It depends how many swords you put in them. We've managed a 4-sword lock but specialise in 6,7 and 8 sword locks. The 9 sword lock is a secret and will remain so for a few years.

Yes, baritone horns are at the same pitch as euphoniums. But euphoniums have bigger bores. And talking of that, are you still listening at the back?

Not on the subject of music but... watching Braveheart last night I thought I recognised the voice of the English lord who demands his right of Prima Nocti and sets off the whole schemozzle. Looking carefully I realised it was Lord Ashfordly!!!

If Mike Bradley gets it together with the doctor he'd better watch out.
