Subject: RE: Here's to Spike From: GUEST,Firecat at college Date: 01 Mar 02 - 04:44 AM I was gtted to hear about Spike's death. As an 18 year old I amtoo young to have listened to the Goons or watched the TV programmes, but my first experence of him came with the fact that my Granny has copies of Milliganimals and Silly Verse For Kids. I have also read up to Rommel? Gunner Who? in the war memoirs, and couldn't stop laughing. I read in the paper that somebody (I can't remember who) said, "One of the last jewels in the crown of English comedy has fallen out." Very true. Goodbye Spike, you were a genius. |

Spike Milligan was a mighty man,
When Milligan came to the undertakers
And up in the church they all were weeping,

Subject: RE: Here's to Spike From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 02 Mar 02 - 07:36 AM I'm in the happy position of being old enough to have listened to the Goon Show first time round alongside my Dad who introduced me to so much great radio humour. Here's a thing --- if the essence of comedy is timing, how cool is it to die in the week leading up to an already-scheduled Heroes of Comedy tribute programme? (tonight Channel 4 21.00 GMT)Sheer genius! |
Subject: RE: Here's to Spike From: Fiolar Date: 03 Mar 02 - 05:00 AM Sincere thanks to Channel 4 who transmitted "Heroes of Comedy - Spike Milligan" on March 2nd. Watching it brought home to me what a genius the man really was. He was the one who trod uncharted territories of comedy and made the paths which so many others would follow years later. Eric Sykes summed it all up at the end by saying that he hoped they would go together as he couldn't imagine life without Spike. |
Subject: RE: Here's to Spike From: Lanfranc Date: 04 Mar 02 - 05:07 AM The Goons, Flanders and Swann, Tom Lehrer, Paddy Roberts, Rambling Sid Rumpo. All were components of my youth and formative years and shaped my sense of what was humorous (as opposed to my sense of humour, which is another matter entirely!) Only Lehrer is left, now. Nothing I hear today comes close. I am saddened by Spike Milligan's death, but his books and recordings are still with us, along with many manic memories. Thanks for all that. Alan |
