Subject: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Genie Date: 11 Mar 02 - 08:57 PM Starting a new thread because THIS THREAD has the spelling screwed up to the point where folks may not recognize the title. The same old gentleman who wanted me to find "Sierry Petes" (which you folks more than accomplished in a flash) asked if I could find another Gail Gardner song called "Hassayampa Hank." Any of you folks familiar with the song? I'd like the tune and lyrics, if anyone has them. I imagine the chords aren't hard. (I think Sierry Petes has two.) Genie |

Subject: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Genie Date: 11 Mar 02 - 10:03 PM I cut and pasted it, Liland. Dunno what went wrong. (Maybe my finger was tired.) Thanks. Genie

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Rincon Roy Date: 11 Mar 02 - 11:27 PM folks in Prescott (press-kit) Arizona say any one foolish enough to drink from the Hassayampa never tells the truth again... |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Mar 02 - 11:32 PM Some of Gardner's poems are hard to trace down, if they weren't reproduced, since they sometimes appeared first in newspapers. He wrote a little book of songs called "Orejana Bull: For Cowboys Only," which I have been trying to find. It may be in there. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Mar 02 - 06:53 PM Romaine Lowdermilk, rancher-songwriter, had a spread on the often dry Hassayampa River. Gail Gardner's stomping grounds were near Prescott, to the north a ways. I have a nagging idea (but only that) that Lowdermilk might have been the composer. I doubt the title hacienda Hank- unless the poem is about a lay-a-bout. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Genie Date: 12 Mar 02 - 11:31 PM The guy who asked me for the song (an old cowboy from Arizona)was quite clear in the pronunciation, even if he did not know how to spell it. It's "Hassayampa," not "hacienda." Genie |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 13 Mar 02 - 12:12 AM I found that a reprint of the little book, "Orejana Bull," is still available for abt. $10 from Amazon. I have ordered one. Genie, I think you are correct. I can't see either Gardner or Lowdermilk using "hacienda" in that way. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 14 Mar 02 - 06:31 PM I've inquired of three folks who are quite knowledgable about cowboy poetry and none recall that particular poem. One who is very familiar with Gail Gardner's works doubts Gardner's connection and said that he would guess that possibly Powder River Jack may have been the writer. Another, who is on the road now, said he would check more when he got back home. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Mar 02 - 08:45 PM If Genie had said Lowdermilk rather than Gardner, I would have gone along with that since he lived in that area. I looked all over the internet, but the only thing close was "Hassayampa Casserole." A whole bunch or realtors seem to be peddling land around there and there is a golf course (cattle probably barred from the area now). |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Mar 02 - 09:07 PM Have a hankerin' fer the Hassayampa? Lowdermilk once owned this guest ranch: Hassayampa |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Genie Date: 15 Mar 02 - 02:25 AM In early April, I'll be seeing the gentleman who asked me about this song (and Sierry Petes). I'll see if he can recall any lyrics. Seems to me he does know some of them. Genie |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 May 02 - 04:45 PM I checked "Orejana Bull" by Gail Gardner. Not in there. I still tend to think it is a Lowdermilk song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: artbrooks Date: 04 May 02 - 08:45 PM I used to live in Prescott, but I never heard of it...not surprising, because cowboy songs aren't high on my list. But I checked with a friend there who is into that kind of thing (he's one of the coordinators of the annual Cowboy Poets Gathering), and he doesn't know it either. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 May 02 - 10:52 PM Looks like Hassayampa Hank is one of the "Ghost Riders in the Sky." A poem by Charley Sierra is called Hassayampa. Hassayampa Here are a couple of verses- the rest is on the website. Some call me a "prevaricator," Some say I'm a liar. Either way, it means the truth Ain't somethin' I admire. They say, "Take anything he says With a great big pinch of salt." Yup, veracity eludes me, But folks, it ain't my fault! There's a crick called "Hassayampa" Down Arizona way, An drinkin' from it makes you lie- Least, that's what people say... Etc. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Gail Gardner: Hassayampa Hank From: Genie Date: 05 May 02 - 12:35 PM That's a great website and a neat poem, Dicho. Obviously not the Gail Gardner song, but a good 'un anyway. Dicho |
