Thanks Babe - I've got the CB&C bubbling away on the stove top - I can smell it from here! And tomorrow my band and I shall sally once more into the breach and brave the wild hordes at Jasper O'Farrell's pub and fend off the requests for Danny Boy. It will be fun (it always is).

I've heard it's a myth that corned beef and cabbage are common in Ireland (not that you can't enjoy it if it's your tradition). I heard it was started by a big restaurant in Boston who decided to offer it on one St. Patrick's Day for no good reason, and it was so popular, they did it the next year and the next until nearly everyone decided to do it as well.

Any ideas?

Actually, it's more usual to eat bacon and cabbage...bacon being a joint rather than slices ,which is boiled and the cabbage cooked in the water....which you then drink...yum!!Corned beef is saved for Sundays where I come from and part boiled, then roasted and served with big floury spuds in their skins....likewise and equally, yum.

Well Christy Moore's 3 hours have just finished here on Tara. His guests included Donal Lunny, Jimmy McCarthy, Shane MacGowan (terrible teeth but in great voice), Sinead O'Connor and Hamish MacColl, Ewan's son, plus archive footage of Ewan and Peggy. Brilliant! We also got the Parade from Dublin at lunchtime. My best ever St Pat's day.

Now I'm going to have a glass of Tyrconnell and 4 big bottles of very, very cold Murphy's stout!

You may call him Dr. Clancy now: honorary High Degree, in Letters (!), from Univ. of Limerick. A Saint he Ain't and the voice has, um, evolved; but still Yer Man, sez I. BUT: the telly commentator said that "Tommy Makem is in retirement now"! Balls, cried the Queen. It is true that he is not. I emailed 'em on dat one. (btw Tommy got his Limerick Doctorate too, with Liam. Come a long way since they last shook hands.) Otherwise, good TV piece.

Well, I did 3 retirement residences today, complete with Danny Boy, Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral, and some other Irish American songs that are de rigeur among senior citizen yanks on St. Patrick's. I got to throw in a few Irish tunes (e.g., Roddy Mc Corley and Mick McGuire) to boot.

Later in the evening, I did one set at a local pub (portland, Oregon) and DIDN'T do Danny Boy, but got to do whichever Irish songs I chose.

In the 2 PUBS I visited (singing or just stopping in), I was a bit vexed to note that I was the ONLY ONE SINGING IRISH or IRISH-AMERICAN Songs!! One pub, complete with green plastic hats, featured a blues band with someone singing country/western during the breaks, and the other (named RILEY's!) had a classic rock band!

There are, of course, some Irish pubs in Portland that have bands playing Celtic music, and they are very popular. But in so many pubs here, the only tribute to the Irish on St Patrick's Day--if you can call it that--is drinking a lot!

When the older generation (who loved the music of Bing Crosby and George M. Cohan) is gone, the American tradition of singing fake Irish songs (e.g., Irish American tin pan alley and broadway songs) on St. Patrick's day may well die out. For many, it will be replaced by the renaissance of enthusiasm for Celtic music (including both traditional and contemporary). For a lot of others, though, I fear St. Patrick's may join Labor Day and Memorial Day as just another day to tie one on.

Hope your celebration (or lack thereof) was a good one.

Well, Saturday night I sang a few songs at the Corn Beef and Cabbage Supper at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Portland, ME and then went to see Cathie Ryan and her truly fantastic band at the Center for cultural Exchange. I topped off Saint Patrick's Day by marching with the Hibernians past Saint Dominic's Church in Portland which will become a new Irish Cultural Center and low income housing. We saw a group get up and dance The Walls of Limerick and listened to a whole slua of politicians get up on the podium and say, "Blah, blah, blah..."

What I didn't realise is that I had marched the whole parade route with my glasses and stood yacking to my friends while missing one lens(I was stone sober, honest)! I fortunatly found the missing lens in my pocket while I was out walking my dog, Gráinne.

Leprechaun, if you have a chance to go to Singtime Frolics, I may see you there. I haven't been pursuing bars and coffeehouses as paid music venues recently, but I do sing at a number of jams, song circles, and open mics in Portland (and Seattle). (I got my corned beef and cabbage this year, as well as homemade dark beer, at the 3rd Saturday folksing last Sat.)

I still have to do a belated St. Patrick's party today at The Hazelwood (Retirement Community) and one this evening at Terwilliger Plaza Independent Living.

Haven't done Eugene yet. If you PM me, I can give you more specifics about where and when I'll be doing music (professionally or otherwise). I'm interested in what's happening in Eugene, too.

BTW, I avoided spending a lot of time in pubs this weekend, because (especially where there's Celtic music) it's wall-to-wall people and a lot of cigar smoke. I'd rather visit our Irish pubs some other time when you can breathe, hear, and dance!

The beetle referred to in the poem is a heavy wooden pounder the husband used to mash the spuds while the Missus added nettles and milk. Champ (sometimes referred to as thump in Kildare) and colcannon. Two different dishes, but similar.

A basic champ recipe would be to boil the spuds with the skin on. Take a bunch of scallions and chop 'em finely, green stems and all, and boil them in a couple of cups of milk for 3 to 4 minutes, then turn them off and let them sit for a bit. Peel and mash the freshily boiled spuds, then mix in the milk and scallions while the spuds are still hot. Mix 4 to 8 spoons of butter in the warm mix, maybe some peas, and there you have it. Wonderful stuff.

Colcannon is very close to this in its preparation. Again, you would begin with scrubbed spuds, skin on. You would cook them in boiling water about 15 minutes, till they are still a bit hard, then take about 2/3 of the water out, cover the pan and let them steam until they are tender throughout. Easy on the heat during this part. The steaming insures that you don't boil the subtleness out of the spuds.

While the spuds are cooking, take a small cabbage, peel off the outer leaves and cut the cabbage into quarters. Take out the center and chop it up into pieces. Boil it in salted water until its got the right feel, then drain it, put some butter, salt and pepper and set it aside.

Take the spuds, peel 'em (you should be able to pull the skin off) and mash 'em warm. Pour enough boiled milk on them to beat them creamy, and then mix in an equal amount of the boiled cabbage. Season it if it needs it, put it in a bowl hot, mash a hole in the top and put some creamy butter and jump in feet first.........LOL.

Save whatever doesn't get eaten. You can frie it like pancakes and it is great.
