Help: Traditional Singers in Ireland

Subject: Trad Singers in Ireland? From: Bev and Jerry Date: 20 Mar 02 - 08:45 PM We'll be in Ireland from May 2 through May 21. From May 2 through May 5 we'll be in Dublin and the rest of the time we won't. We want to participate in as many traditional singing circles as possible and we'll plan our itinerary to do that. So, anywhere in Ireland is possible.
We have searched the forum, going back at least a year, and have found these:
Mayes pub in Dublin every Friday night
Crane Bar in Galway third Saturday night
Trinity Inn in Dublin every Friday night (Traditional Singers Club)
The Cottage in Nenagh on the second Friday of the month (Nenagh Singers Circle)
Verbal Arts Center in Derry on the fourth Sunday night of the month (Foyle Folk Club)
Can anyone add some regularly scheduled song circles to this list or correct what we have found? Bev and Jerry |

I was in a pub in England and started talking an Irish couple about Ireland and music in general that turned into a great night, the same thing happened in a pub in a pub I visited in Glen Afric? There's also a monthly session in Howth (just outside Dublin, accessible by rail) in the Pier House Bar. And yes - that's P.J. Mind you, I suspect he'll not think much of the "USED to be on the radio" bit! Still at it on Clare FM at least, as far as I know. Regards p.s. Oh, yes.. Mayes is at the junction of North Frederick Street and Dorset Street. Used to be called Maguires. When I went to the first session there a few weeks ago, it brought back memories. The last time I was there was as a student over 30 years ago. It was the first and only time I was served a sandwich in kit form - two large slices of bread, ham, a dollop of butter and a knife! |

Don't tell me the Trinity Inn's about to be demolished ?? Finally, Bev & Jerry, I think there's also a singing hardcore of some sort concentrated around Forkhill (Armagh?). Try a search on the net... There is a break unfortunately for the summer months. The Spailpín also has very good trad sessions on a few nights of the week, not quite sure, but think it's Tues, Wed., and Thursday. Enjoy the craic. |

The Dapp Inn second Friday of every month from September to May. Our guest in May is Tim Lyons. The first and third Wednesday of every month in Brogans, O'Connell Street Ennis. Killea near Templemore, Co. Tipperary second Monday of every month up to May. Banagher, Co. Offaly on the third Tuesday of every month up to May. Galway on the third Saturday each month in the Crane (note early start at this club at 6.30 pm finishing around 9) Knockrockery Co. roscommon on the first Saturday of each month up to May or June. First, we have three locations for the Nenagh Singers: The Dapp Inn, The Cottage and Derek Browne's Bar. Which is right?
Second, do you have more specific location information on Killea in Co. Tipperary or on Banagher in Co. Offaly?

The Cottage is the address of our esteemed secretary Frank McGrath. Derek Browne's pub has been sold. Killea is a village near Templemore and the venue is the only bar in the village - O'Sullivans. Friday, May 3 - went to the Goilin Club at Mayes Pub in Dublin. It was an excellent evening with lots of fine singers They had a guest, a young lady named Shavan (sp?) Moore who is brilliant.
Saturday, May 4 - went to Hughes Pub in Dublin. A fine instrumental session but thinly attended by both musicians and listners.
Thursday, May 9 - after a few days of concentrating on scenery, went to McCarrol's Pub in Ballycastle, County Anrtim. A fine instrumetal session with some group singing.
Friday, May 10 - McGrory's Pub in Culdaff, Inishowen. Another excellent instrumental session but once again, thinly attended by both musicians and listeners.
Sunday, May 12 - Crane Bar in Galway. A good instrumental session but we missed the singing the night before.
Monday, May 13 - Singers Circle at O'Sullivan's in Kilea, County Tipperary. This was a very fine singing session that lasted half the night. One of the attendees was Michael Smith, the Irish Minister of Defense.
Tuesday, May 14 - Roadside Pub, Lisdoonvarna, County Clare. A so-so instrumental session with more tourists than people.
Wednesday, May 15 - Ennis Singers Club, Brandon's Bar, Ennis. This meeting was cancelled due to the McNamara Clan gathering occurring that week. Went on to Linnane's Pub also known as Kitty's Corner, Kilfenore, County Clare. The best insturmental session we have ever attended with some members of the old Kilfenore Ceile Band.
Thursday, May 16 - Jim of the Mills Pub, near Ballycahill in County Tipperary. This place is nearly impossible to find but had a wonderful mixed session (instrumental and singing). It's only open on Thursday and has no sign so the gardai can't find it either. Lasts until dawn.
Friday, May 17 - Carlow Traditional Singers. They moved their session to the second Friday this month so we missed it.
Sunday, May 18, Cork Traditional Singers, Spailpin Fanach Pub, Cork. This was a fine singing session but ended before midnight.
Tuesday, May 21 - Fingal Singers Club, O'Connors Pub, Ballyboughal, County Dublin. Despite it's name, this was a mixed session but both singing and playing were excellent.
We decided to give up the Nenagh Singers Club to see the Glenns of Antrim and the north coast. The singing in Banagher, County Offaly, occured the night before we left from Dublin Airport so we couldn't make that one.
We had a wonderful time in Ireland and the music was all we had hoped for. Once again, thanks to all of you for your help. We couldn't have done it without you. Bev and Jerry

I can confirm the Folk club still meets at the Verbal Arts Centre, Derry last Sunday of the month - not strictly traditional singing but that is an aspect of it There's an Irish language song circle at the Culturlann in Belfast once a month |

One of the clubs mentioned, Glens of Antrim, was featured on Tommy Sands' radio programme yesterday. In Armagh city, you could get information from the Piper's Club. Another likely place in Armagh would be Mullaghbawn. |

They move to a different pub each month for their sessions, that way they involve a lot of locals who would not otherwise be able to travel to the sessions. This has proven very successful over the years and a lot of local songs have been collected by Paddy Berry at these sessions. No problem finding music sessions but most of these don't have much space for singers. I think the enquirer would be interested in both folk club and Ir. trad. type gatherings. I think there is a singing sesssion at the John Hewitt pub - what days and times? An Cultúrlann has a monthly song session, but it is almost strictly Irish language (the only onther language I heard sung when I was there was Scottish Gaelic. The website listed above is currently in need of an update (lists events from June this year, but not Oct)and it has a list of sessions, not specifically singing. I also didn't see specific mention of singing circles at the South Antrim trad music webpage. |
