I don't recognise the word. Related to "daite" - coloured, dyed?? I recall hearing a song called "An Báitsiléir" (the Bachelor; could you mean that?

I'd borrowed this cd from someone who'd lost the liner. I want to get it, and it'll be virtually my first purchase upon finding employment. I've looked on the Web for info, and that's been the only way I've seen it written, but I cannot say with certainty that the Websites don't have it wrong! It wouldn't be the first time.

The Bachelor, an Baitsiléir, had been wild as a youth, courting and sporting all night. Not surprisingly, he's now single and penniless. He advises other men to pick a woman and settle down. Despite the moral of the story, the song has a jauntly lilt to it. I've copied the lyrics from notes on the Cló Iar-Chonnachta CD "Ar Fhoscadh na gCnoc" featuring Gearóidín Bhreathnach (Gearóidín Neidí Frainc, originally from Rann na Feirste). She learned the song from Seán Bán Mac Grianna. Gearóidín's children often perform with her, and she has held workshops encouraging children to sing.

Hi,

    I'm sorry for refreshing a very old thread. I am relatively new here, although this is not my first post. I am a Sean-Nós singer singing Donegal songs, and "An Baitsiléir" is one of the songs I sing. I learned it with Gearóidín Bhreathnach herself many, many years ago. I am also aware that it is on her CD, but I have used that CD and its cover with the lyrics so much both are damaged beyond repair. I sing this song very often but am now realising singing it has become too automatic and I need to get back to making sure I am singing all the lyrics as they are written. The lyrics as you wrote them are great, however there is one line missing in the third verse ("Bhí mé aigeantach a damhsa..."). After the second line, "Bhí mé croiúil a gabhail ceoil", there is one line which I belive talks about how good he was at seducing women. The line goes something like: "Bhí mé.... á suirí". I used to think Gearóidín was singing "Bhí mé ealaíonta á súirí", "I was artistic in my seducing (of women)" but she very clearly sings an adjective finishing in the sound "ach". Anyone has either Gearóidín's CDs with the lyrics or Cónall Ó Gallchóir's and know please? I would like to make sure I am very precise in my singing of that verse. Thanks and very best regards. Hi Bathsheva!

You might be able to check out the original CD notes at Clo Iar-Chonachta, out the road from you. Failing that, ask Grace to check out the copy in ITMA. I'm assuming Philippa just mis-transcribed it back in 2002.

I don't see a version in any of my own books at the moment.

Thanks lads! I will go on and join Mudcat indeed, am fairly new to the forum and not the best with technology, but I'll figure it out! Hi Martin, yes I was thinking of Grace all right but thought I'd enquire on here first as I didn't want to disturb her! I listened to that CD so much the booklet is like wrecked, so I've no lyrics left. I sing about half the songs on the CD, which makes it rather silly I've no booklet for it! :.)

      I'm surprised I created such curiosity. Anyway, I'm Batsheva Battu, I'm originally from France, I learned Irish in Donegal but now live in Connemara, I sing Sean-Nós as well as some Ballads and Scottish Gaelic songs. I also sing Medieval Music/Gregorian Chant/Byzantine Chant. I am hoping to start my own businness/project in Music Education and m currently researching English language repertoires from the British isles.
