Subject: Major router down in the US?
From: hesperis
Date: 25 Mar 02 - 09:54 AM

I haven't been able to access ICQ, hero6.com, MSN, AIM, Yahoo IM or email, hotmail, google, practically anything I use regularly, since friday afternoon.

The traceroutes show the trail going over into qwest and then just dying, and I can't get a ping on any of those hosts. I know my friends on other ISPs *can* get into them... but their traceroutes aren't going through qwest.

The even weirder thing is that my own site, which is right *on* the qwest line, loads fine. So maybe it's a problem on the router after qwest? Or maybe there's a confused router, and the sites I want aren't that way at all? (The first traceroutes for hero6.com showed bellnexxia going into qwest, and the last one shows sprintlink???)

Is there anything I can do? The problem doesn't appear to be in the sympatico part of the trail... so I don't know if calling my ISP will do any good. *Cries*

Help?

there are at least 3 routers down (one in Quebec) and 5 "in the red" according to the internet traffic report. Of the 139 routers being reported only 3 are "in the green"

Thanks, MMario! BTW, what's the url for that? I couldn't find it in my favorites when I was looking.

Oh, and almost as soon as I posted here, I was able to get those sites again. LOL!

Fascinating! Checked Google for "internet traffic report" and, guess what: http://www.internettrafficreport.com! Thanks, MMario...what an interesting site. We can all watch, spellbound, as organized cyberspace slips slowly beneath the waves....

Aloha,
Mark

Yeah, it's frustrating. I have MSN and can get online, but can't access my e-mail.

Basically a router is just something that directs internet traffic to their proper destinations...when they go down the traffic is supposed to be directed around that affected area....unfortunately alot of times the traffic just crashes into the roadblock....

But who owns the routers and why do they own them? Who makes all of this magic happen?
