Subject: an baitsiléir From: ciarili Date: 27 Mar 02 - 06:34 PM The title of the original thread from which this comes is spelled incorrectly, so I'm creating this thread for the benfit of those who may plug in the right one! This was actually contributed by Phillipa: The Bachelor, an Baitsiléir, had been wild as a youth, courting and sporting all night. Not surprisingly, he's now single and penniless. He advises other men to pick a woman and settle down. Despite the moral of the story, the song has a jauntly lilt to it. I've copied the lyrics from notes on the Cló Iar-Chonnachta CD "Ar Fhoscadh na gCnoc" featuring Gearóidín Bhreathnach (Gearóidín Neidí Frainc, originally from Rann na Feirste). She learned the song from Seán Bán Mac Grianna. Gearóidín's children often perform with her, and she has held workshops encouraging children to sing.
