Thank you SO much for the info! Someone gave my (now ex-)wife a commercial (not bootleg) tape of her songs. Two things stick out in my memory of the tape: the cover photo shows her sitting in a folding lawn chair at some outdoor event, massively pregnant and balancing a drink on her tummy. The second was a song complaining because her new baby was always asleep when her friends came over to see the new baby. I suppose this song is the third thing, as it was the last song on the tape. In that version, each line is sung only once, not twice.

Twenty plus years ago, I heard this song on a Washington Radio station. They had a noon time folk show that was eventually cut and replaced by Bluegrass (typical for DC). The singer/songsriter was a woman from Canada. She sang it a capella. Only song I ever learned in one hearing. The repetition helped. I started a thread years ago on the Cat, but never received a reply.

I still sing the song on Fathers' Day (with some lyric changes) and would love to give credit where credit is due.

Along about 1987 - 1990, I was listening to a folk show while driving in my car. The host was interviewing a woman who had just released an album of songs for mothers. He played an acapella cut of the song below. It's the only song I've ever learned in one hearing and it remains in my repetoire. However, I am unable to give credit to the songwriter. I originally asked this question thinking the woman was Canadian. It was suggested I might have misremembered, so I am expanding my search to all women, hoping someone will have the answer. So, I ask you, Mudcatters: "Who is the woman who wrote this song".

I think I requested this last year and did not see a reply. About 10 years ago, I was listening to a DC radio folk program (Lee Michael Dempsey (?) on WAMU). I heard the following song by a female singer whom I believe was from Canada. She had recently published a recording of mothers' songs. It was quite simple and I have used it many times by simply making it a Father's Day song.

I learned a song in one listening on the radio. I believe it was written by a female Canadian singer/songwriter and it came from an album of "Women's Songs" she recorded. It was acapella and the words are:
