Subject: U.K Shellbacks Chorus plans forU.S trip
From: treaties1
Date: 03 Apr 02 - 01:45 PM

Members of the Shellbacks Chorus would love to visit and hopefully sing at maritime events in the U.S.A.

Numbers, dates,or length of visit, cannot not yet be agreed, but probably fall 2003. Logistically the North East states appear the best, though, nowhere is excluded at this early planning stage.

Information of probable dates, locations and who to contact, for any Annual Maritme events in year 2003 would be very helpful in compiling a possible schedule for our trip. Any help that Mudcatters can give would be most gratefuuly received.

Many thanks in advance Theresa

Good goshamighty!! How utterly cool...Well, of course, if you can make it to Mystic Seaport during their festivities, you should. That really is the pre-eminent Shanty festival in the US. There are likely some gooduns in Canada as well, what with that being the home of one of the great "Stans" of our time.

There are quite a few in the southern states as well, seeing as Piracy is such a big thing these days, and there being many historical ports that were frequented by the likes of Blackbeard, et al.

And (correct me if I am wrong) but I believe Mmario has mentioned the Maryland faire as we do a Piracy weekend with *lots* of guest artists.

There are also a metric buttload of nautical and folk events around the Chesapeake Bay area, most of which can be found on our website, as we do a great deal of them.

www.pyrates.com

Wow...but it *would* be fantastic if you guys did happen to do one of the events we do. Probably the only way I am ever going to see you myself.

Hello everybody, great to see the thread is still visible, as getting to the computer gets harder each day.

Thanks for your interest Dead Horse but, When everyone in Shellbacks is, or is an aspiring,Shanty Man, then Captain Derek vets all newbies (that includes coat carriers too Liz the Squeak) Dates of Maritime events are what I'm seeking so, my next task has to be, chasing up Celtic Soul and Jeri's links.

|But, just out of interest, which kind Catter puts on the lovely yellow highlights? Thankyou kind soul.

Will you be on the West Coast? There are several possible venues - the schooner WAWONA in Seattle, Washington, the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Oregon, the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco where the full-rigged ship BALCLUTHA is berthed, the San Diego Maritime Museum where the Barque STAR OF INDIA is berthed, as well as smaller maritime museums in San Pedro and Monterey, California. PM me if you'd like details.

Hello, Abuwood. Mystic Seaport is on the East Coast in Connecticut. Their festival is in June but they might have concerts going on in the Fall.

Abuwood, we'll have berths aboard historic ships at Hyde Street Pier for the Shellbacks if you make it out here for a performance. You would all need to bring sleeping bags and padding.

I mean like foam or something else to go between the sleeping bags and the wooden berths. Most of the berths come without the "donkey's breakfast."

Linda & I always carry padding! Trouble is airplane seats often don't account for this! It sounds cool to sleep on a ship, but I like the idea of Canada, we have Morris men in shellbacks too and a couple of Mummers groups if that goes well over there. What parts of Canada JohnB? My experience of Vancouver was lovely, kind og old fashioned, like Scotland with an American accent, to be honest the USA scares me. I am a country girl at heart and don't like big cities. Least I will be travelling with a bunch of huge blokes!

Don't worry, Abuwood, the only people robbing Shellbacks would be crimps, and we don't have those anymore :-). It's not hard to get to the rural areas. Finding sea music gigs there could be challenging. It's of course up to you Shellbacks where you want to go, but let me know if you want West coast US venue contact info, plus a few East coast contacts and I'll PM you a list. Just let me know who the list should go to.

Hi Everyone Great response to date, thankyou all. Sorry I've been missing again, I've just come back fron the UK's foremost traditional festival The National Folk Music Festival at Sutton Bonnington,Leicestershire where I had the pleasure of meeting David Jones from the Northern USA currently acting in New York City, and Louis Killen.I actually managed to lead three shanties over the weekend which is pretty good going in what is usually a very agricultural and industrial heritage type of festival.

I will liase with Derek and as soon as possible try to get probable dates and follow up contacts. Thanks again be back soon.

Well, a lot has happened since this thread...

Shellbacks are singing at the FSGW Getaway in Maryland this coming weekend, South Street Seaport in New York and Mystic Seaport during the week and then New York Pinewods festival in Connecticut the following weekend- with all the lovely Fall colours around us as we're travelling.

Some of us are staying on for the rest of the following week ('til the end of October) and are still open to suggestions... :0)

Can't wait!

Thanks all for the help you have given us in organising our first international tour. I hope it won't be the last!

No-one ever seems to worry about the sex of the singer in any other part of folk music: Maddy Prior's bold weaver falling in love with a factory maid springs to mind. Just relax and enjoy.

Besides, if you study your folk music, you will realise that half of any given crew were women in disguise searching for their Johnny/Willy/Henry/whoever.

"Official sources account for just more than 20 women who dressed as men and who served in the Royal Navy or Marines from the late 17th century to early 19th centuries"

Not enough for one for each song!

"Women dressed as men played a part in a number of songs, many no doubt a matter of wishful thinking, but there was an underlying reality which made the songs particularly interesting to both genders"

come on! women heaving and hauling!!!!

I don't expect to see 6ft 6 navvies singing songs like "I was once a country maid"

don't forget that the 'age of sail' was also a time when your *AVERAGE* woman probably spent a great deal of her day 'heaving and hauling' something or other.

and if "official" sources document as many as 20 women who served - I'll bet there were a good many more that either are NOT documented, were covered up; or were never discovered "officially".

Again - it may not have been common - but it *did* occur - enough that it made an intrigueing subject.

And I don't know about the women of your acquaintence - but I know more then a few who would deck me if I suggested they were incapable of performing the work aboard a ship.

piffle, 'again', I have SEEN women do this work at places like Mystic Seaport...not as many as men, but there were a few small, weaker male sailors, too..

stupid stereotypes and generalizations are tedious...

Unnamed GUEST - Actually I thought that to be truly traditional you should limit shanty singing to genuine square-rig sailors only. That should help keep things quite. Or is it somehow alright if (male) teachers and social workers join in?

Or perhaps you haven't realised - it's about singing songs!

Tradition is Tradition,

Women did not go to sea as a rule, they were not part of the chantey tradition and the songs and content of the songs are male orientated e.g.:-

WINDLASS
As I walked out one morning fair,
One more time.
It's there I met Miss Nancy Blair.
One more time.

CHORUS
I shook her up, I shook her down,
One more time.
I shook her round and round the town.
One more time.

CHORUS
There ain't but one thing grieves my mind,
One more time.
It's to leave Miss Nancy Blair behind.
One more time.

CAPSTAN

Was you ever in Quebec
Bonny laddie, highland laddie
Stowing timber on the deck
Bonny highland laddie

CHORUS:
Way ho and away we go
Bonny laddie, highland laddie
Way ho and away we go
Bonny highland laddie

SHORT HAUL DOUBLE PULL

Oh, when I was a little boy me mother often told me;
Way, haul away, we'll haul away for Rosie, Oh.
That if I did not kiss the girls me lips would grow all mouldy.
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe.

CHORUS
Way haul away, we'll haul for better weather.
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe.
Way haul away, we'll haul away together.
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

HALYARD

Whiskey is the life of man
Whiskey, O, Johnny, O
I'll drink whiskey when I can,
Rise her up from down below.

CHORUS

Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey,O
Up aloft this yard must go,
John rise her up from down below

Folk music is about keeping tradition alive NOT altering things to be PC

I have no problem with people of any sex doing a job they are capable of doing - but Women and chanteys do not mix! even if the women is big strong and butch! and most of the " Small, weaker male sailors, too" didn't last the trip!!!!!

ps I also don't like to hear women swearing and cursing - I might be "old Fashioned" or maybe just traditional

I don't like hearing women swear and curse either - it usually means some poor guy is in a lot of trouble!

women sing MANY songs from the male point of view - so why not shantys?

Do not forget that The Shellback Chorus sing Maritime and Shanties. Very few of the women actually sing Shanties, mainly songs to do with the sea. Theresa is an exception and I defy anyone to deny her the right! A fearsome little lady!
Loads of men sing women's songs and loads of people who have never been down a mine, sing mining songs, plenty of landlubbers sing sea songs and at least the songs are being sung!
I have avoided singing Shanties (except choruses) for the last 30 years, except Lowlands, abotu which there has long been arguments, but I am going to start this winter!

Thanks GUEST, I'm sure we will have a great time.

It is an interesting subject for discussion- perhaps you would like to start a thread on it?

(There is no doubt that the content of the songs are male orientated but I don't see why I can't sing shanties if men can (and do, beautifully) sing such songs as Lord Gregory and Shule Aroon.)

....check in in 9hrs...

I'm late, but whatthehell. The "women shouldn't sing sea shanties" is silly in its selectiveness. Shanties should be sung by men to be authentic. The should also only be sung on board an appropriate type of vessel and only when performing an appropriate task. There should probably be nothing but accidental harmony, and I'd say at least 25% of singers singing off-key. (Not a bad idea for a thread, but perhaps shanties is too narrow a topic.)

Oh well, I sing sea shanties. If you'd like to be scared, please feel free.

Col K should be at Tinker's now?
Oh well, she's probably too busy talking with him, or she's taken him on a beer hunt!
