Coates, a song about a loving mother visiting her son in prison. A storyteller, songwriter from Idaho, Sorrels included this song in her anthology songbook "What, Woman, and Who, Myself, I am". It's a fun song, and includes lyrics - "Now that the children have grown up, I can sleep until noon...Now that the children have gone away, I can sit down and write me a tune..."

It is a parody of the classic Frederick Faber hymn Faith of Our Fathers and uses the same tune, ST. CATHERINE. Subject: Lyr ADD: Motherhood, Sublime, Eternal From: Haruo Date: 12 May 04 - 08:15 PM As motherhood hymns go, I much prefer "Motherhood, Sublime, Eternal", with its roots in the Mother-God theology of the 14th Century English Roman Catholic anchorite nun Julian of Norwich. The tune MIDI is in my hymnal with the text, which I also add here: Motherhood, Sublime, Eternal Words by J. S. Cutler My source: Christian Worship: A Hymnal, 1941 (a joint publication of the Northern Baptist Convention and the Disciples of Christ)
The tune is attributed to Willis N. Moore. I know nothing more about lyricist or composer, nor about the textual/publication history of the song. But as motherhood hymns go, I like it. Haruo |

Many years ago there was a young man by the name of Dave (I can't recall his last name just now.) who was hanging around the open mics here in Seattle. He was originally from your area (Madison) and was a fine writer, picker and singer who offered listeners a couple of cassette recordings of his original songs. I always wanted to learn one of his songs called , "Be Good To Your Momma". That would make an excellent addition to any Mother's Day playlist. I'll see if my friend JW has that one on hand. JW runs the open stage at Murphy's Pub. That was where I'd bump into Dave. I understand that JW has one of Dave's recordings but I don't know if it contains that song. I'll check and let you know more info when I find out. |

(He's Makin' Eyes At Me!) - (learned all the verses from an Eddie Cantor album) - Grandma's Featherbed - (since most of the mothers in my audience are grandmas too) - Coat Of Many Colors - (written by Dolly Parton, based on a true story from her childhood) - Shortnin' Bread - Mama, He's Crazy - sung by The Judds - Yes, My Darling Daughter ("Mother, may I go out dancing? ... ) - That Wonderful Mother Of Mine - (very schmaltzy song from about 1910) - My Yiddishe Mame - (which I've also heard sung as "My Wonderful Mama") - Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen - Yiddish lullabye - Hush, Little Baby - (usually sung as "Papa's gonna buy you a ..." but I substitute "Mama") - My Mammy - as sung by Al Jolson (I skip this one if I fear my audience may take it as racially stereotyped, but to me the lyrics themselves have nothing to do with race, although "Mammy" is associated with poor people in the southern US. And there are many more songs too by Rosalie Sorrells that are well suited to Mother's Day, motherhood being something she's written about often. Jack Campin--it would thoroughly astonish me if public celebrations of Mother's Day were ever to acknowledge darkness in mothers' behaviour. Maybe it's the Disney effect but in general, pretty stories abound to the exclusion of a full spectrum view of motherhood. At least on this side of the pond. Mary Waitrovich--Do you or your funders explicitly or subtly prefer to stick to the "nicer" song choices? If, for such a special occasion, you avoid the songs that teach about or lament the painfulness in mothers, I'd like to understand why that is. ~CH. |
