Subject: Mother's Day Songs From: Date: 05 Apr 98 - 11:48 AM On May 10th(Mother's Day) I'm doing a community radio show (WORT in Madison Wisconsin) and want to play songs closely or loosely related to mothers. It's a woman's music show and I would appreciate suggestions for songs with women's voices only relating to that idea. Any genre. Post here or email me: marywait@itis.com Thanks so much to all, Mary Waitrovich |
Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: Barbara Shaw Date: 05 Apr 98 - 12:27 PM "The Sweetest Gift, A Mother's Smile" is popular in bluegrass circles, written by James B. Coates, a song about a loving mother visiting her son in prison. Another bluegrass mother song is "Hold Fast to the Right" by Robert and Bill Brumley, about a mother's advice when sending her son off to face the world.

Subject: ADD: My Mom's a Feminist (Kristin Lems) From: rosebrook Date: 05 Apr 98 - 12:48 PM Mother's Day Song, written by Rosalie Sorrels, might be a fun addition to your program. A storyteller, songwriter from Idaho, Sorrels included this song in her anthology songbook "What, Woman, and Who, Myself, I am". It's a fun song, and includes lyrics - "Now that the children have grown up, I can sleep until noon...Now that the children have gone away, I can sit down and write me a tune..."
My Mom's a Feminist (Kristin Lems) is another goodie! http://www.kristinlems.com/equality_road___double_cd/s/my_moms_a_feminist MY MOM'S A FEMINIST (Kristin Lems) I pulled into the loading zone Feeling nervous, I was all alone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBO0oQbeVBg |
Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Apr 98 - 07:08 PM Mary, here's a link to the liner notes for A Parents' Home Companion, a wonderful CD by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. The song in the CD that touched me most was "Dear Mom." You'll find that song's lyrics last on the liner notes. This one CD could make your whole show. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: Date: 07 Apr 98 - 10:04 PM Sorry, the protagonist is Jack (not Jill), but momma's good as gold: Someone Is Waiting For Me recorded by the Red Clay Ramblers (late 70s or early 80s) and by the Stoneman family in the 20s but reissued on "Round the Heart of Old Galax" (County Records). |

Subject: LYR ADD: Faith of Our Mothers From: Haruo Date: 10 May 04 - 01:56 AM At church this morning (Mother's Day) for "Special Music" we (all the men present) sang a hymn which our pastor found in the New National Baptist Hymnal (2001). It is a parody of the classic Frederick Faber hymn Faith of Our Fathers and uses the same tune, ST. CATHERINE. I would appreciate knowing any details such as the year the text was written and/or first published; A. B. Patten's full name and vital statistics... Faith of Our Mothers Words by A. B. Patten And He said to the woman, "Thy faith hath saved thee" — Luke 7:50 KJV

Subject: Lyr ADD: Motherhood, Sublime, Eternal From: Haruo Date: 12 May 04 - 08:15 PM As motherhood hymns go, I much prefer "Motherhood, Sublime, Eternal", with its roots in the Mother-God theology of the 14th Century English Roman Catholic anchorite nun Julian of Norwich. The tune MIDI is in my hymnal with the text, which I also add here: Motherhood, Sublime, Eternal Words by J. S. Cutler My source: Christian Worship: A Hymnal, 1941 (a joint publication of the Northern Baptist Convention and the Disciples of Christ)
The tune is attributed to Willis N. Moore. I know nothing more about lyricist or composer, nor about the textual/publication history of the song. But as motherhood hymns go, I like it. Haruo |

Subject: Tune ADD: Mother's Day Waltz From: GUEST,Norval Date: 11 May 06 - 02:03 AM For Mother's Day on Sunday a pretty waltz named for that special day seems fitting. The tune was popularized in Canada by Don Messer and His Islanders during the 60's and 70's. The sheet music is not available at the biggest music store in my area nor could I find it on the Internet. This ABC was transcribed from an older folio that resembles hand written manuscript. The folio misnamed the tune "Mother's Waltz" (traditional) when in fact the composer is John Durocher and the correct title is "Mother's Day Waltz". Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: Tannywheeler Date: 15 May 06 - 10:24 AM Add the old chestnut, "Tramp On The Street", popularized by Hank W.(tho' he didn't write it). Chorus: "He was some mother's darlin'; he was some mother's son. Once he was fair and once he was young. Some mother rocked him, her little darlin', to sleep-- But they left him to die like A Tramp On The Street!!" The last verse is about Jesus, and the chorus is: "He was Mary's own darlin'; He was God's chosen Son. Once He was fair and once He was young. Mary, she rocked Him, her little darlin', to sleep, But they took Him to die like A Tramp On The Street." These bits are from memory, not necessarily letter-perfect. Good song..............Tw |

Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: GUEST,reggie miles Date: 12 May 07 - 01:33 AM Mary, I live in the Pacific Northwest. Many years ago there was a young man by the name of Dave (I can't recall his last name just now.) who was hanging around the open mics here in Seattle. He was originally from your area (Madison) and was a fine writer, picker and singer who offered listeners a couple of cassette recordings of his original songs. I always wanted to learn one of his songs called , "Be Good To Your Momma". That would make an excellent addition to any Mother's Day playlist. I'll see if my friend JW has that one on hand. JW runs the open stage at Murphy's Pub. That was where I'd bump into Dave. I understand that JW has one of Dave's recordings but I don't know if it contains that song. I'll check and let you know more info when I find out. |

Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: GUEST,kay Date: 10 May 08 - 06:45 PM have been looking for an old lyric of mothers day song Dick Purtan of Detroit radio plays every year.....it begins.. Fathers, they're the most neglected ones.. Do everything that you can You owe a lot to your old man...and the chorus... You should always love your papa treat him right and treat him proper for without your papa you would be no where If it wasnt for your father would your mother be your mother? You can thank your lucky stars your pop was there And if he'd been a little stronger and held out a little longer then me miight have stayed a single guy and its safe to be assummin' that you wouldnt be a human you would only be the gleam in mothers eye so............ and remember what I say If it wasn't for your father, would your mother be your mother? so remember Dad on Mothers day.... have probably botched this immensley, but would love to get a link to find this old favorite on line - Thanks Kay kayisbak@aol.com |

Subject: Lyr Add: STITCHES (Adam Brand) From: Acorn4 Date: 11 May 08 - 04:55 PM Found "Stitches" -song is by Adam Brand -I find most of these songs worthy of a sickbucket but I actually lost my Mum last week and this does strike a chord:- There's a scar on my right elbow From a barbed wire fence when I was eight years old I must have ran a mile just crying in my torn shirt 'Till I heard the words tell me where it hurts. If there was a scratch or a bruise on my skin Mama would put me back together again All it took was her prayers and her kisses It would heel me just like stitches. I took Sherry Johnson to the high school dance But she left early with my best friend I must of drove ten miles to get my mind off her But it didn't work 'till I heard the words tell me where it hurts If there was a scratch or a bruise on my skin Mama would put me back together again All it took was her prayers and her kisses It would heel me just like stitches. She could mend a broken heart, fix a bicycle wreck, Funny now but back then it seemed life or death I've seen her sew rags into riches It would heel me just like stitches. If there was a scratch or a bruise on my skin Mama would put me back together again All it took was her prayers and her kisses It would heel me just like stitches. |

Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: Genie Date: 12 May 08 - 07:03 PM Some songs I routinely use in my Mother's Day programs (usually done for Independent Living and Assisted Living residences) are these: - Lady Madonna - The Beatles - Let It Be - The Beatles (written by Paul McCartney for his mother, Mary, who died when he was a teenager) - Mother Machree - Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (An Irish Lullabye) - Ma! (He's Makin' Eyes At Me!) - (learned all the verses from an Eddie Cantor album) - Grandma's Featherbed - (since most of the mothers in my audience are grandmas too) - Coat Of Many Colors - (written by Dolly Parton, based on a true story from her childhood) - Shortnin' Bread - Mama, He's Crazy - sung by The Judds - Yes, My Darling Daughter ("Mother, may I go out dancing? ... ) - That Wonderful Mother Of Mine - (very schmaltzy song from about 1910) - My Yiddishe Mame - (which I've also heard sung as "My Wonderful Mama") - Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen - Yiddish lullabye - Hush, Little Baby - (usually sung as "Papa's gonna buy you a ..." but I substitute "Mama") - My Mammy - as sung by Al Jolson (I skip this one if I fear my audience may take it as racially stereotyped, but to me the lyrics themselves have nothing to do with race, although "Mammy" is associated with poor people in the southern US. I like to ham it up with this one, if I'm with people who will appreciate the campiness of the song.) - Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (Sung from the viewpoint of the woman, who is now "grandmother of eight") - Que Sera Sera - (sung by Doris Day) (This is a good sing-along for my retirement home gigs; people from several generations find it easy to sing along with.) - Blues In The Night (My Mama Done Tol' Me) - (Harold Arlen) - Mama Don't Allow - (I dedicate this to all those who did not mind their mothers) and these (already mentioned above): - C'e 'na Luna Mezz' o' Mare (Mama Mia, Mi Maritare) - (Louis Prima) - Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys - The Sweetest Gift - M-O-T-H-E-R (I apologize for singing this one, explaining that I will get a ticket from the Mother's Day cops if I don't do it) - Mama (Connie Francis) |

European Ethnic Melodies Show PRESS RELEASE "The One, True Perfect Genre of Music for Mother's Day 2010" You are invited to enjoy a very special evening of memorable, uplifting, and happy music for the 22nd annual celebration of Mother's Day on the European Ethnic Melodies Show, which is broadcast from the campus of Binghamton University. This program will be broadcast on Tuesday May 4, 2010 from 7-10 P. M. locally in the Binghamton, New York area at 90.5 on the FM dial, and simulcast world-wide, at www.whrwfm.org. The family-structured program, the "Ultimate Cultural Experience," is a 4-star "grandchild-tested and parent and grandparent-approved" world-class musical enjoyment experience for an inter-generational audience located on two continents. The annual special program for Mother's Day on the European Ethnic Melodies Show, the Excel Award-winning program for "outstanding multi-cultural programming at Binghamton University," will highlight and showcase the most eclectic and diverse selection of the very dynamic life-force, multi-ethnic Euro-American folk, world, nationality, and polka music from two continents from the past century and more of recorded music, including Klezmer music. The program's musical selections, all identified in the native European languages and then translated into English, will definitely put a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and make you feel good all over--both physically and mentally...for it's music from the heart ... for the heart...for Mother's Day. The program will also honor the many European and American blue-collar, working-class musician-composer-bandleaders who took the time to write and then record their music in the many styles and tempos to honor their own family matriarchs in a very special way--with music. It should be noted that these blue-collar, working-class musician-composer-bandleaders in Europe and America also wrote their music under some very difficult and trying economic and political conditions, thereby making their many hundreds of timeless musical selections compiled for the special Mother's Day program to be "the one, true perfect genre of music for the celebration of Mother's Day." You may also be interested in knowing that the many Euro-American musical selections from the past century and more of recorded music to honor mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, step-mothers, and mothers-in-law comprise the largest number of musical selections for Mother's Day when compared to any other genre of music--anywhere in the world. Sincerely, Daniel Jan Walikis(BU-Class of '77) P. S. The European Ethnic Melodies Show, broadcast since 1988 on Binghamton University radio, WHRW-FM, has also been simulcast on the Internet since 1998. The program has been known as a true elder-friendly music show since 1988, long before anyone ever coined and copyrighted the term, "elder-friendly." In 2004, the show became the very first pioneer, proto-type program in the nation to combine the unlimited parameters of music therapy with multi-ethnic music in order to create the first Euro-American multi-ethnic music and wealth-of-health wellness program in the nation designed to Slow Down The Aging Process of an aging society and nation as well as help an audience, including caregivers, cope with day-to-day ailments, stress, chronic pain, diminished capacity, dementia, and an extended list of other serious cognitive disorders. Hopefully, many of these ailments will be forgotten or diminished with all of the happy music for the celebration of Mother's Day with the timeless treasures of music that will put a smile on your face, a song in your heart , and make you feel good all over--both physically and mentally! "Little did you ever think that the real music of your life, the timeless treasures of your heritage that you first learned at your babcia's (grandmother's) knee so many years ago, would be so very important to you in your later years---for all your health, heritage, music, and memories matter." |
Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: GUEST,Ken Brock Date: 23 Apr 10 - 11:04 AM When I had a radio programs in 1998-99, for Mother's Day in 1999 I aired Tom Lehrer's "Oedipus Rex". |
Subject: RE: Mother's Day Songs From: Crowhugger Date: 24 Apr 10 - 09:01 AM rosebrook--that's a good choice. And there are many more songs too by Rosalie Sorrells that are well suited to Mother's Day, motherhood being something she's written about often. Jack Campin--it would thoroughly astonish me if public celebrations of Mother's Day were ever to acknowledge darkness in mothers' behaviour. Maybe it's the Disney effect but in general, pretty stories abound to the exclusion of a full spectrum view of motherhood. At least on this side of the pond. Mary Waitrovich--Do you or your funders explicitly or subtly prefer to stick to the "nicer" song choices? If, for such a special occasion, you avoid the songs that teach about or lament the painfulness in mothers, I'd like to understand why that is. ~CH. |
