Who's Nic Jones??

What's his genre of music? Did he produce an album called "Unearthed". If so, does if feature a track called "War Like Lads of Russia"

Nic Jones was one great singer, guitarist and arranger of traditional songs. There are several threads about him (I'm not sure how to do the blicky thing, but I'm sure someone will be able to steer you that direction). Many of his song arrangements like "Warlike lads of Russia," "Anachie Gordon," and "Rose of Allendale" were adpated and sung by other performers. To my mind, Nic's versions were always best. Other threads have a lot more background. I spent my 21st birthday in London in 1975, watching Nic play in a folk club, one of the best concerts I'd seen. His way of styling a song can't be beat.

Yes to all of that.

Why the question??? you seem to already have the answers.

Who were the Beatles, were there four of them, did they come from Liverpool and was one of their songs Yellow submarine.

The reason for the question is because I am trying to track down a recorded version of "War Like Lads of Russia", and was just informed no more that 10minutes ago of Nic Jones. So I guess my main question is... Is there a recording of this song?

Yes, but there are websites out there that give history, discography, etc., far more easily than one can type it all out here. So, why not take a philosophy of have a look round the web, then formulate questions....and there are already threads here. I bet most folks can figure out how to use the search box. The answer to why they don't mystifies me. It's easier than waiting for someone to answer, which'll sometimes take a day! Google will even show Mudcat topics, so it'll lead you to a thread sometimes.

Hey, ease up guys, everyone has to be a learner sometime....

Bet you all didn't know lots of stuff when you first joined... and search engines are not always reliable, much like people's spelling and interpretation of the title. Besides, if you could just ask one question and get it all answered in one go, wouldn't you, rather than waste time and run up charges by doing lengthy searches on a subject you know very little about?

Don't expect people to run when they've only just discovered they have legs....

I'm with Liz on this one – I only just got here. I looked up Mudcat coz every one said what a great and friendly place this was - as it happens I know who Nic Jones is but I'll sure be very wary of asking questions based on this, the first thread I happened to look at... surely if you don't want to help someone out you just don't bother to post a reply ???

Do I need a better introduction to the etiquette on this site ? If so where is it…help!!

I'm with Sky and Liz - lets be friends and help one another. Too much one-upmanship and snobbery in the world already, don't need cyber-snobs as well. No need to slap people around just because they don't know the fastest way. We're not all highly educated computer geeks - some of us are just mere technophobic musicians.

Ciarili seems to have a bee up his/her butt. This is not the only thread they have posted that particular comment on.... methinks they work for Google? Personally, I've found Google as helpful as a chocolate condom at times, but if all I want is flat information and have a few hours nad limitless internet time, then a search engine is all I need. However, they only work if you know exactly what you are looking for. Try typing in 'the warlike lads of Russia' and see what you get! 210 hits is what you get, and not all them are songs.

If, on the other hand, I'm using the tactic of asking a relevant question to a group of interested people to get interaction and personal response (after all, I bet Google hasn't met Nic, let alone actually heard him play or spent quality time with him), then that is the sort of question I'd ask.

If I want to know what farming was like in the 1930's in rural Dorset, I can look it up and spend hours reading but I'd far rather ask my aunty and get the real thing.

Good for you John from Hull. Some of the responses to this postine were less than generous. It's the sort of question I asked when I first started using Mudcat; it was the helpful responses I got from People like Matthew and Masato that encouraged me to become a member, and in time offer occasional help to other newcomers.

Everyone's got to be a learner sometime? I hope most of us can be learners most of the time. I reckon I've a pretty extensive folk knowledge but I could ask some really impressively stupid questions about blues...

Yes, some trollers have started threads to provoke us, but provoking us into discussing subjects we are supposed to be talking about? That's really cunning!

Surely asking questions that have been asked before is much the same as singing songs that have been sung before. Both will find a time and a place with someone who will then add to the event some information, viewpoint, style or memory that will enrichen the subject.

There's no such thing as a question that's been fully answered.

There's a nice story about Nic on Phil Beers's website, (www.philbeer.co.uk - click on the Nic Jones box), that many 'Catters will not have seen before and I wouldn't have pointed out if I hadn't seen this thread.

Pete

PS. Liz, where did you get the chocolate condoms? *BG* PPS. No, on second thoughts, I won't ask...

All questions totally welcome. Dont be put off by the odd bad tempered response, theres alway someone around who got out of bed on the wrong side. I was shocked when i started visiting Mudcat by how rude some people were to perfectly well meant questioners: please believe that 99% of people here are really quite endearing . I am. Well, some of the time, anyway.

Oh, relax! Initially I was just surfing in a hurry - sometimes I check these threads in between other stuff I've got to do when I've got a few minutes here or there. That's why no caps. I just kept seeing those kind of posts, and I always check google.com and then check the search engine on this site before I post.

I turned all my friends onto google, as a matter of fact. So far I never found anything else with better hits, and I gradually learnt to tailor my searches so as to zero in on what I was looking for more effectively. (It wasn't so long ago that I was learning myself, so enough with the cyber-snop whiney stuff.)

If you guys are so quick to decide you've been offended, it begs the question, who's the one with a bee up his/her butt?

Celtic.Records.Com, I am going to be very impressed if you learn how to breathe to get all the lyrics fluently delivered in this song.

I always marvelled at how Nic managed to make it sound so effortless.

Many years before Nic's accident we asked Nic if we could record him singing it during a live performance. Once we had convinced it was for domestic consumption only he agreed.

Pity the technology was not up to the present day standard, since it was only a humble audiocassette recorder.

This kindness was much appreciated.

Whew! It was only a simple question... So I didn't knew who Nic Jones was... I live in Atlantic Canada and could name a handful of folk/traditional artist that some user may not know.

ciarili, thanks but I hate using search engines! I do know how since I have been using internet since 1990 (remember those old modems!) Besides I find the folks here to be very well informed and for the most part helpful. I've been visiting here since 1999 and for the most part, just watching. I've been turned on to many great artist by using this website, maybe Nic Jones is my newest find. Anyways... thanks again gang!

Hi Celtic...
I, for what its worth, have no objection to your question!
Masato (as usual..!! Cheers) has probably pointed you to all the relevant threads regarding Nic and his work..
But, if you need any more info,,,,(Inside leg measurement, favourite brand of tea, etc Only Joking!)
Send me a PM...
As many have said, We are all discovering new music of whatever genre, all the time. Wouldn't life be dull, if we all new everything?
Thanks for your enquiry, and, as you have no doubt discovered, Warlike is on "Unearthed" CD1 TK5. It was originally recorded by the late Fred Woods, for a compilation celebrating his mag, Folk Review.

Best Wishes

It looks like a version of Warlike Lads can be found in the Bodleian Ballad library, under the name Bonaparte's escape from Russia. A new song (When Bonaparte from Russia into Moscow went ...)

Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to view the image at the moment, so I don't know whether it is legible.

I wasn't 'whining' - just expressing a viewpoint. Valid criticism is a positive thing but, judging by your negative reaction to someone whose views don't quite align with yours, I guess it's not just one bee but a whole hive you've got up there!

Celtic Relics,

I highly, highly recommend Nic Jones' version of Warlike Lads. If you have a hard time finding it, though, it was "covered" by the Black Family on their first album, which may also be available. But do try to find Nic's CD set Unearthed. It's brilliant!

Ya know, I have to come to Ciarli's defense here (not that ciarli needs it, mind!). I don't think (s)he did anything wrong to say "check google first"! It is sensible advice, not nasty or curt.

I don't know why John from Hull jumped on Ciarli's case, considering that other posters had already suggested they were a bit baffled as to why CelticRelic was asking a question (s)he already seemed to have the answers to.

It is always a good idea to a web search before asking here, especially because it is so much easier and faster to do a google search than a Forum/DT search!

I'm not a fan of Nic's myself, so have no information to offer. But I do wonder sometimes about the fact that so much negativity seems to surround so many threads about him. Or am I the only person who has noticed that here?

Roman - the 'negativity' you mention about Nic Jones threads results from the facts of the case.

Nic produced some of the most innovative arrangements of traditional songs with wonderful voice and brilliant guitar accompaniment.

Nic had a serious road accident that meant he could not work as a professional musician any more.

Nic's first four albums are still not available on CD, because the rights belong to someone else who, despite pleas from many people, will not release them.

Nic's distinctive arrangements of traditional songs have been copied by other well-known artists without any acknowledgement.

And I've said all that without slagging anybody else off!

I have never felt any negativity in threads about Nic. I find it very heartening that a singer who I greatly admired when I first entered the folk scene well over 30 years ago is still so well regarded.

I do remember, in my teens, at Brentwood Folk club one of my school friends spending 20 minutes trying to chat up Julia not realising that the attractive single girl on the door had been replaced by an even more attractive married one.
