Subject: The Battlefield Band From: Dan In Michigan Date: 08 Apr 02 - 12:23 AM Hi all, I went to see a great show tonight. The Battlefield Band was playing in a small auditorium near Kalamazoo. What a great show. They have recently replaced a couple of band mambers, and the new band members are som very talented individuals. It looks like they are on a loooooong tour in the U.S. |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Charcloth Date: 08 Apr 02 - 03:22 PM who is in their line up now. Last I saw them there was Alan Reid, John McCusker, Davy Steele & Mike Katz. Did they change their line up again? |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: GUEST,Badger Date: 08 Apr 02 - 03:27 PM Davy Steele passed away last year -- a great loss. Reid, McCusker, and Katz were all still in the band when I saw them in Saint Paul last year, and in place of Steele they had a woman whose name I can't remember offhand. "Happy Daze" is their first album with her. |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Jock Morris Date: 08 Apr 02 - 04:31 PM Karine Polwart joined the Battlefield Band last year, but I'm not sure if she is still with them. If she is then she had to have been moving damn fast as she was still in Edinburgh at 4pm on Saturday! Scott |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Jock Morris Date: 08 Apr 02 - 04:46 PM A quick search for the Battlefield Band website confirms that Karine has indeed left the band (on good terms), so that she can concentrate on her work with Malinky and MacAlias. Check out both of these for some damn fine music! Scott |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Apr 02 - 06:23 AM The best concert I ever saw was the Battlefield Band at Fylde many years ago. Their 'Scottish ceilidh' set was a wonder to behold - 'Proud Mary' will never be the same again having heard it played on bagpipes!!! I can't remember the line up at the time but they were very good indeed and the range of music played was phenomenal. Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: GUEST,John Of The Hill Date: 11 Apr 02 - 10:54 PM I'll second what Jock Morris said. When I heard that Karine Polwart had joined Battlefield, I was afraid Malinky would go by the wayside. Glad to hear they have a new cd coming this summer, and heartily recommend their first cd, Last Leaves. John |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Tattie Bogle Date: 12 Apr 02 - 06:38 PM The "new man" in the band is Pat Kilbride, who, I believe was with them some years ago. I agree, anything Karine Polwart turns her voice and guitar to is "quality"; saw Macalias tonight in Livingston and they're on again tomorrow at Glenfarg Folk Feast and Malinky in same place on Sunday. Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: GUEST,m.dunlop Date: 13 Apr 02 - 03:43 PM Just happened to be looking into this thread. Thanks to Tattie Bogle, John of the Hill, Jock Morris for great complements to Malinky. I've also played with Malinky since day 1, and never cease to be amazed that "ordinary" people have A. heard of our stuff and B. seem to enjoy it to a greater or lesser degree. Karine recorded Happy Daze with the Batties, and it's a cracker. Malinky were fortunate enough to work with Davy Steele and I speak for us all when I say he was a great man and we all miss him. m.d. |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Tattie Bogle Date: 19 Apr 02 - 03:55 PM M.D. You omitted to say that your bodhranning is FANTASTIC and your song on Sunday at Glenfarg was SUPERLATIVE! In fact the whole Malinky set was BRILL! Tatti B |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: GUEST,m.dunlop Date: 20 Apr 02 - 11:00 AM Help ma boab, Tattie Bogle - it's a Christmas card for you this year. Be honest, I'm not likely to post messages like "I'm a great bodhranner" (nice one) am I?, but ta for the complement. As for the song, well. Singing with two hugely talented young singers (they'll love that) like S & K really puts the pressure on me, as I'm very new to the game. Supportive words like yours mean a great deal, so again thanks. Come see us @ Edin F.C. on 17th July - yer more than welcome! |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Apr 02 - 07:32 PM Hope to see you in Girvan too! Have also been a fan of the Batties for many years: came in when Alistair Russell and Dougie Pincock were in the line-up, large marquee in Dunbar when John McCusker's "Parcel of Rogues" were the support band, and seen them aaa couple of times with Davy Steele (RIP) and Karine's gig with them in the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh: Happy Daze indeed! Tattie B |
Subject: RE: Review: The Battlefield Band From: JulieF Date: 24 Apr 02 - 04:40 AM Dave the Gnome Yes I was at the Fylde gig as well. I remember it as being the wonderful end of a very long weekend. My favourite Battlefield band memory was seeing them at Southport Arts Centre many, many years ago. At half time we sped to the bar - given that long queues were due to develop - but the band had beaten us to it. They must be due to play Sheffield again sometime. Julie |
