Subject: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: axman664 Date: 10 Apr 02 - 09:31 AM This is for my personal benefit, but have fun with this: Who are the top 5 young folk artists/bands coming out of Ireland and Scotland these days? Dan |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: weepiper Date: 10 Apr 02 - 02:13 PM In no particular order: Malinky (group) Leo McCann (solo - he's also in Malinky) Daimh (group) Croft No.5 (group) Fine Friday (group) And numerous others. Those are just the first five that spring to mind... |

Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: greg stephens Date: 11 Apr 02 - 06:14 AM Danu, wonderful traditional playing but perfectly modern ,no "Celtic" Hollywoodisations. The tops. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST Date: 11 Apr 02 - 08:08 AM As far as Irish music goes, I'd like to add that some of the best music is coming from Stateside. Try Solas & Liz Carroll. For Ireland, I'd add Deanta. And don't forget England and Mike McGoldrick. And where is your cut off for "young" exactly? It seems to me some of the acts listed above (Battlefield Band, Capercaillie) would most definitely be at the upper end of the young scale! |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,An t-Oileánach Date: 11 Apr 02 - 08:14 AM Here are a few who haven't been mentioned yet but who deserve a mention ...
Cillian Vallely ... pipe maestro And finally, on account of his ability to knock out original compositions like they were going out of style, a fellow by the name of Aidan Crossey. Don't know much about him, or his musical ability, except that he has about a hundred tunes on a website called "Pay The Reckoning" and I've spent the past couple of weeks working my way through them. This boyo doesn't have blood in his veins! He has turf-smoke dissolved in neat Inishowen poitín! See what I mean by clicking here.

Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,An t-Oileánach Date: 11 Apr 02 - 08:19 AM I think young is a red herring. In my post I've picked out a few people who are relatively "fresh". But youth is neither here nor there as far as traditional music is concerned. If you're good, you're good no matter your age.
|
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST Date: 11 Apr 02 - 08:46 AM I'll second the opinion that young is red herring. I'd also second Mairead Nesbitt. Info on her can be found at the very fun "Fiddle Chicks" website (sorry don't have the address to hand), but the excellent Irish American fiddler Eileen Ivers is found there too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST Date: 11 Apr 02 - 08:47 AM Oops! And I'd put Canuck American Natalie McMaster on the list too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,Declan Date: 11 Apr 02 - 11:18 AM I don't disagree with any of the above selections, and I'd definitely have Danu in any top 5 traditional bands playing at the moment regardless of age. Some other candidates : Altan (Ok they're a bit older than some of the others mentioned) Calico Lia Luachra (if they're still around) Sharon Shannon & The Woodchoppers Moher The Josephene Marsh Band and from Scotland : Russell's House John Mc Cusker The Poozies Tabache and from England : Broderick Bill Jones 422 Tim Van Eiyken |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,Declan Date: 11 Apr 02 - 11:29 AM Forgot to mention Cara Dillon, and (how could I forget) John Mc Cusker's Mrs can sing a bit as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,An t-Oileánach Date: 11 Apr 02 - 12:15 PM Declan ... You're wrong , I'm afraid! Mrs McCusker can sing A LOT!!! While we're filling in our gaps ... I need to give Eliza Carthy a mention! And Brian O'Connor - his "Come West Along The Road" is a little-known but blinding album!
|
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Aidan Crossey Date: 12 Apr 02 - 03:52 AM Not Irish or Scottish, but youngish (under 90! I, too, agree that age is a complete red herring) and worth checking out ... Firebrand, Banoffi, Kinin, Celtish, Mad Rush And very definitely Irish, Richard Gilpin! |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: weepiper Date: 12 Apr 02 - 02:53 PM Hey! Celtish! I would have put them down but I didn't think the album was out yet... my significant other (who is a member of Malinky - hey I'm biased) is pals with them. They may not be Irish or Scottish, but one of them is Scottish and another has an Irish dad....does that count? :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Aidan Crossey Date: 12 Apr 02 - 05:03 PM There's one from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. You can read a review of "Up For It" at www.geocities.com/paythereckoning/reviews.html I confused them for along time with Celtus ... |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Peter Kasin Date: 12 Apr 02 - 05:21 PM From England, playing Irish and Scottish music, Tabache's flute/fiddle player Claire Mann. From America, playing Scottish music, the 18 year old cellist Natalie Haas, an excellent non-classical cellist who performs with Alasdair Fraser. 23 year old Hanneke Cassel, another American who plays Scottish and Irish music and is in the Cathie Ryan band. Can English music be included? Kate Rusby! Ireland's young flute player Harry Bradley. So many more brilliant young Celtic musicians out there. chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,Trasno...sem cookie? Date: 12 Apr 02 - 08:41 PM chanteyranger...the aforementioned mrs McCusker is AKA Kate Rusby. and whatever happened to "shooglenifty"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,Trasno...where's my cookie? Date: 12 Apr 02 - 08:49 PM weepiper...what's the malinky line-up then, apart from "if anyone can"? nothing to do with "dibidil"is it? |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Peter Kasin Date: 13 Apr 02 - 03:36 AM Yes, I'm aware that she's married to John McCusker. Breaks my heart just to think about that :-). Kate gets more than one vote here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Mac Tattie Date: 13 Apr 02 - 12:08 PM May I put a word in for "Fine Friday" AKA, Kris Drever, Naula Kenedy and Anna-Wendy Stevenson. Their first CD is out now on Foot Stompin'Records www.footstompin.com a threesom to get an earfull of. cheers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: weepiper Date: 13 Apr 02 - 05:14 PM Trasno, No nothing to do with Dibidil (that's Leo and Kris's thing is it not? Incestuous world, the Edinburgh folk scene). Current Malinky line-up is original members Karine Polwart (vocals/guitar), Steve Byrne (vocals/guitar/bouzouki), and Mark Dunlop (bodhran/whistles/flute), and new members Leo McCann (button box/whistles) and Jon Bews (fiddle, my squeeze) They go into the studio to begin the new album next week. And since I'm blatantly advertising, can I also put in a word for Jon's other band Cantrip, recently signed to the abovementioned Footstompin' Records, due to record their first album in July...you should watch out for this one. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: greg stephens Date: 13 Apr 02 - 06:46 PM Greater Celtdom is in a bit of an expansionist phase at the moment, but elisa carthy and kate rusby is stretching it a bit as Irish/Scottish performers isnt it? i know a few kurdish and afghan performers but do you you really want to hear about them on this thread? |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Aidan Crossey Date: 13 Apr 02 - 07:05 PM Can they knock out a convincing jig or slip jig? If so, bring them on! As an Irishman who likes Irish music (and gets a kick out of excellent English musicians getting a kick out of getting a kick out of Irish music), I've no bawr wi' Mrs McCusker and Lize getting a mention in this thread.
|
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: Peter Kasin Date: 14 Apr 02 - 01:20 PM No claim here that Kate Rusby should be included as "Celtic." The question was asked if this thread could expand to include English performers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: axman664 Date: 15 Apr 02 - 08:44 AM Nor do I have a problem with hearing of English. Forgive the "young" qualifier...it was intended to expose those who have not had much time to make a reputation for themselves. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST Date: 15 Apr 02 - 12:24 PM Natalie Macmaster..and what is Canuck American. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 5 young artists from Ireland/Scotlan From: GUEST,Don Date: 15 Apr 02 - 01:23 PM Might depend on what you call "young", but in the area of Traditional Irish Dance music, there is a tenor banjo player named Enda Scahill. He has a debut album out called "Pick It Up" which has some wonderful playing on it. |
