A song I have liked for a long time....first heard if=t from Tom and Bertha Brown of Norfolk....many years ago. I have just got yher version by George Dunn, and wonderful it is too.I think the song was written by Harry Clifton [1824-1872] any one any information on the song, especially any verses. Thanks Dave.

Take a look at this thread. Jon Freeman also pointed you there when you asked on 3 April.

Is that Dave Hunt THE Dave Hunt? (Drinker of beer, caller of dances, etc?) If so, then welcome to the Mudcat. If not, welcome to the Mudcat.

John

Dave

There was also brief mention of Harry Clifton in The Good Ship Kangaroo, from GUEST BijJ, which I quote here since it's short "According to Michael Kilgarriff's book 'Sing Us One of the Old Songs' Harry Clifton (1824-1872) was also responsible for 'The Calico Printer's Clerk'; 'Dark Girl Dressed in Blue';'I'll Go and Enlist for a Soldier';'Lannigan's Ball'; 'Paddle Your Own Canoe';'Ten Minutes Too Late';'The Watercress Girl' and 'On Board the Kangaroo'. "

I think Levy has also "Pretty Polly Perkins of Abingdon Green" attributed to him (from memory - something I came across and haven't gone back to check that).

You might also like to contact Steve Gardham, member of the Traditional Song Forum, who has songs of Harry Clifton listed as a current project. His address is on the TSF Members' page
