Sadly the death from cancer has been announced of the actor Robert Urich. Born in 1946, he made a few films but most of his success was on the small screen with such series as "S.W.A.T" (1975 - 1976); "Tabitha" (The spin-off from "Bewitched" 1977 - 1978) and the series for which he will always be associated with, "Spencer: For Hire" (1985 - 1988)< Robert B. Parker's private eye. At peace.

I heard the news this morning on the radio, and had a tough time starting my day from there. He was one of the few really likeable actors on television – no matter what part he was playing, there was always a gleam of mischief in his eyes. From everything I've read, he was a nice, affable guy off-screen, too.

Among his television credits is the starring role in the series "VEGA$".

When it was first announced that he had cancer, I was really rooting for him, and for a while it seemed as if he'd be staying with us for a good long while. Now he's gone after just 55 years. I'm going to miss the spark he lighted whenever he appeared on screen.

I felt his best role was as the easily mislead Texas Ranger in Lonesome Dove. The scene where he was to be hung alongside the outlaw gang, and spurred his horse to take his own life, was a nice piece of acting. Unfortunately, it was one of the few roles that involved any kind of reach for Urich.

Emmy-Winning Actor Robert Urich Dies From Cancer at Age 55

L O S   A N G E L E S, April 16 — Robert Urich, an Emmy-winning actor best known for his starring roles in "Soap" and "Spenser: For Hire," has died after battling cancer. He was 55.

Urich died Tuesday morning at a hospital in Thousand Oaks surrounded by family members and friends, publicist Cindy Guagenti said.

Urich announced in 1996 that he was suffering from synovial cell sarcoma, a rare cancer that attacks the body's joints. The cancer went into remission after he underwent chemotherapy, radiation treatments and two operations.

Urich earned his first television role in the 1973 comedy series "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice." He also appeared in the TV series "S.W.A.T" before being cast as Peter Campbell in "Soap."

One of Urich's most recognizable roles came as private detective Dan Tanna in "Vega$." He later starred in another detective series "Spenser: For Hire," which was based on Robert B. Parker's novels. More recently, Urich appeared in "The Lazarus Man," and the brief NBC sitcom "Emeril."

Born in Toronto, Ohio, Urich won a football scholarship at Florida State University. He later earned a master's degree in broadcast research and management from Michigan State University.

Urich briefly worked in Chicago as a radio sales agent and a television meteorologist. Burt Reynolds helped Urich land his first major role, co-starring as his younger brother in a stage production of "The Rainmaker."

Urich appeared in several television miniseries and cable specials. He won an Emmy for his narration of the cable documentary "U-Boats: Terror on Our Shores." He also won a Cable ACE award as host of the National Geographic series "On Assignment."

Urich spent his latter years devoted to cancer research and education. He and his wife, Heather Menzies, established the Heather and Robert Urich Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Michigan to accelerate the pace of research into sarcoma.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Allison, Ryan and Emily; two brothers; a sister; and his mother. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles.

LEJ: I think you are right. He was highly underrated, I think. His role in Lonesome Dove was an excellent one that any actor would have loved to have played, and he did a great job, I thought.

He was a bad guy cop in Magnum Force, and even counting Jake Spoon in Lonesome Dove it was his one really bad guy roll I think. I enjoyed him in Spenser but I think Lonesome Dove and Captains Courageous was some of his best acting. Cetainly a cut above his usual TV rolls. The other day I saw an add for a Hallmark show he was in and thought he could still do Spenser.

Yesterday, while preoccupied with other matters, I heard one of those teasers on a TV channel [probably NBC], saying "A prominent NBC star is dead. Tune in at 11:00." I couldn't tune in, and I didn't hear any more. Was Robert Urich the one they were referring to, or did another TV star die yesterday?

He had the same type of likeability factor as James Garner. Always felt his roles never stretched him to his limits. Or maybe he just seemed to make it 'look' easy. My condolences to his family

Trekkie schmekkie! For my money, Hawk was one of the most fine-drawn, charismatic characters on TV. Urich and Brooks worked well together. Good chemistry. Spenser and Hawk could count on each other to the very end, but Hawk was certainly no "Tonto" character. In more than one episode, Spenser and Hawk were on opposite sides, and in at least one episode they wound up beating the living crap out of each other.

Brooks is an excellent actor, but I found Sisko to be pretty bland compared to Hawk.
