Subject: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: GUEST,MarkF Date: 18 Apr 02 - 09:37 AM Can anyone recommend a source of songs (short ones) that can be sung in lieu of a prayer of grace? I need words and music (and chords, if appropriate). The title of a book or three that might include such would be most helpful. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 18 Apr 02 - 09:45 AM "Give us a bash at the bangers and mash me muvva used to make" or "boiled beef and carrots" would be very appropriate and set just the right tone. |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: SharonA Date: 18 Apr 02 - 09:46 AM Hi, Mark, and welcome! Are you looking for songs that are religious, or songs that don't mention a deity but are still mindful of the creatures and plants of the earth of which one is about to partake? Or both kinds of songs? |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: GUEST,greg Date: 18 Apr 02 - 10:04 AM To you, O food/ our thanks we give/ That you have died/ That we may live. Don't think it's gota tune though, but someone could oblige. |

Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 18 Apr 02 - 10:27 AM When we had big family gatherings, my Uncle Walt always used to lead us in singing "Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him all creatures here below, praise him above, ye Heavenly Host, praise Father, son and Holy Ghost." Works beautifully for Christians, but not suitable if you aren't one. Jerry |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: SharonA Date: 18 Apr 02 - 10:34 AM Jerry: That song can also be sung to the tune of "Hernando's Hideaway" (with an Amen at the end for the "stinger"!). Makes it more fun for kids' camps and such! |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: greg stephens Date: 18 Apr 02 - 10:39 AM Little more reverence please Sharon. |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: SharonA Date: 18 Apr 02 - 10:53 AM Greg: Sorry, but it wasn't my idea! Singing those words to that tune has already been done, in summer camps and elsewhere. Anyway, if there is a God, one would hope he has a sense of humor (after all, he's supposed to have created humans, right? And the emu and the platypus? *G*). But okay, here's a reverent song of thanks (go to link by clicking on the blue words, Mark): http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/w/e/t/wethankt.htm |

Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Apr 02 - 11:03 AM Somebody needs to post a warning when links are going to play music! I'll get caught here at work... I like the idea of thanking the people who cooked, sold, and produced the food, as well as the animals and plants involved in being eaten, as well as the evolutionary process for making us omnivores so we can eat anything (except, I hear, penguin). |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 18 Apr 02 - 11:22 AM Fast as i reset my cookie, somebody turns me off. What happens if you eat penguin? |

Scouting (Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts) graces: http://www.macscouter.com/ScoutsOwn/Graces.html (no MIDIs; some songs are sung to well-known melodies – see listing) Graces, Vespers and Closings (warning to Greg: these include the "Addams Family Grace" and the "Flintstones Grace"):http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Glade/8851/songs8.htm Even more camp-song graces: http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Meadow/3763/graces.html |

Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: SharonA Date: 18 Apr 02 - 03:30 PM The following are selections from several camp-song sites. Again, some may be considered more reverent than others. From http://a_scout.tripod.com/graces.htm, another prayer sung to "Hernando's Hideaway": CLICK HERE TO SEE ENTIRE LIST GRACE (HERNANDO'S HIDEAWAY) Be present at our table, Lord, Be here and every where adored, These morsels bless and grant that we, May feast in paradise with thee. Amen. ---------------------------------------------------- "Gilligan's Island" grace in here: http://www.angelfire.com/oh/claremansfield/Graces.html CLICK HERE TO SEE ENTIRE LIST BLESSINGS OF THIS DAY (Tune: "Gilligan's Island" Theme) We thank Thee, Lord for giving us The blessings of this day; For friends and food and family, And showing us the way. The bounty that you set before Us, proves to us you care. We praise you, Lord, for showing us Your presence everywhere. So, join us at this table, Lord, As we prepare to dine. All that we have is sent from you; And all we have is thine. Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: SharonA Date: 18 Apr 02 - 04:10 PM Anyway, here are some Grace songs, with comments in italics from the folks who submitted them, that I pulled them from the "A Prairie Home Companion songbook" at http://phc.mpr.org/activities/19970704_campsongs/index.html (NOTE: A couple of the songs at that site were submitted by Joe Offer!) THE DOXOLOGY (To the tune of "Jamaican Farewell") Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him all creatures here below, Praise him above all heavenly hosts, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost The same words can be sung to the theme song of the "Gillette Cavalcade of Sports". —Dick Roy ------------------------------------------------------------ More Doxology stuff: At Camp Loy White in the foothills of North Carolina, the Camp Director used to make up songs for blessings or sing-alongs dependent on the happenings of the day. For instance, when everybody was sunburned from a trip to the lake, the blessing that night was: To the tune of "The Doxology" Thank God for sun and sun tan oil. Thank God for crabs and shrimp to boil. Thank God we spent the day in fun. May our sunburns be minor ones. AMEN. —Mike S-R, Pearl, MS ------------------------------------------------------------ Another "Hernando's Hideaway" song, similar to the one I posted earlier: Be pre-sent at our table, Lord. Be here, and ev'rywhere adored. These mer-cies bless and grant that we May faith-full for thy service be. A-men! —Susan Squires Cox, San Francisco, CA ------------------------------------------------------------ ...One of the most fun camp songs we sang, was Amazing Grace to various different tunes. For example: To the tune of "The Mickey Mouse Club Song" Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me A-m-a-z, -i-n-g G-r-a-c-e Amazing Grace (amazing grace) Amazing Grace (amazing grace) Forever let us hold His banner high! (high! high! high!) I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now I see! A-m-a-z, -i-n-g G-r-a-c-e [Can also be sung to the tune of] "Ghost Riders in the Sky" (Go ahead TRY IT! You will need two verses of Amazing grace to get through one musical verse.) Try it with other songs too! The words are in such a common rhythm it fits into bunches of songs. These are just the funniest ones I remember. —Amber Mahoney, Lafayette, IN ------------------------------------------------------------ YAWNING IN THE MORNING (Tune: Roamin' in the Gloaming) Yawning in the morning when the rising bell has rung. Yawning in the morning when the dawning day's begun. And when our dip is o'er, and we've had good food once more Then we're happy yawning in the morning. —Beets McMahon ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ I'll TRY to link the index to the entire songbook! Here goes: CLICK HERE TO SEE APHC SONGBOOK INDEX Sharon

Thanks to the hardy meat processors, Carcass-pullers, bird undressers, Packagers and meat-deboners, Company execs and owners. Thanks to 18-wheeler truckers Driving meat to stores, poor fellows. Amen. We do the "Johnny Appleseed" song, too. Sharon M. |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: SharonA Date: 19 Apr 02 - 09:31 AM SharonM (DancingMom): That's great! I'm guessing the "Amen" takes the place of the kettledrum-beats at the end of the "Jeopardy!" song. I read somewhere that Merv Griffin (creator of "Jeopardy!") wrote that tune himself. |
Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: Peg Date: 19 Apr 02 - 10:09 AM I used to have to sing and direct little grace ditties every week at "high table' when I studied at Oxford for the summer (I was the resident music/drama person on staff). Wish I could remember some of these: they are quite formal but nice and short. One of 'em goes "All things are Thine, no gifts have we; Lord of all gifts to offer Thee; and yet with loyal hearts we pray; Thine own before Thy feet we lay. Amen."

Subject: Lyr Add: UNCLE DAVE'S GRACE (Lou & Peter Berryman) From: SharonA Date: 25 Apr 02 - 01:54 PM Okay, this one's not short, but it's cute. There's no MIDI for the tune, that I know of, but a CD with the song on it can be ordered from www.louandpeter.com UNCLE DAVE'S GRACE (Lou and Peter Berryman) Thanksgiving day, Uncle Dave was our guest Who reads The Progressive* which makes him depressed We asked Uncle Dave if he'd like to say grace A dark desolation crept over his face "Thanks," he began as he gazed at his knife, "To poor Mr. Turkey for living his life "All crowded and cramped in a great metal shed "Where life was a drag, then they cut off his head. "Thanks," he went on, "for the grapes in my wine "Picked by sick women of seventy nine "Scrambling all morning for bunch after bunch "Then brushing the pesticide off of their lunch "Thanks for the stuffing all heaped on my fork "Shiny with sausage descended from pork "I think of the trucks full of pigs that I see "And can't help imagine what they think of me "Continuing, I'd like to thank if you please "Our salad bowl hacked out of tropical trees "And for this mahogany table and chair "We thank all the jungles that used to be there "For cream in our coffee and milk in our mugs "We thank all the cows full of hormones and drugs "Whose calves are removed at a very young age "And force-fed as veal in a miniscule cage "Oh, thanks for the furnace that heats up these rooms "And thanks for the rich fossil fuel it consumes "Corrupting the atmosphere ounce after ounce "But we're warm and toasty and that is what counts "I'm grateful," he said, "for these clothes on my back "Lovely and comfy and cheap off the rack "Fashioned in warehouses noisy and cold "In China by seamstresses seven years old "And thanks for my silverware setting that shines "In mem'ry of miners who died in the mines "Worn down by the shov'ling of tailings in piles "Whose runoff destroys all the rivers for miles "We thank the reactors for our chandelier "Although the plutonium won't disappear "For hundreds of decades it still will be there "But a few more Chernobyls and who's gonna care?" Sighed Uncle Dave, "Though there's more to be told The wine's getting warm and the bird's getting cold" And with that he sat down as he mumbled again "Thank you for everything, amen" We felt so guilty when he was all through It seemed there was one of two things we could do: Live without food in the nude in a cave Or next year have someone say grace besides Dave. *The Progressive: A respected old left-wing magazine, published in Madison, WI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3wPuj0Qy1Q |

Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Nov 02 - 05:22 AM A Scottish songer/songriter I knew put the Selkirk grace to music (Possibly a traditional tune). For the life of me I can't remember his name! Iain something I think but can't be sure. I can't remember the verses he used either but he used the grace itself as a chorus. The grace is - Some hae meat and canna eat, and some wad eat that want it, but we hae meat and we can eat, and sae the Lord be thankit. I can't do the music bit here but if you get in touch I can sing it down the 'phone at you! Cheers DtG |

Here is another lovely one I learned at Girl Scout camp as a kid: It's a Poor Man And a couple more -- both rounds (also learned at Girl Scout camp): 1) For health and strength and daily bread, we praise thy name, oh Lord. For health... Hear it sung. (note: it has an "alleluia" bit near the end which I did not learn.) 2) Jubilate Deo Ju-bi-la-te De-o Jubila-te De-e-o A-le-lu-ya YY -- who knows a lot of "religious"-y graces -- that is, a lot for someone brought up agnostic/Unitarian/Jewish(ish)... |

Subject: RE: Need grace (thanks for food) songs From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 11 Nov 10 - 07:25 AM That should be "Counsell" in my earlier post. I'm getting lots of missed characters with this keyboard! He was quite a character himself, always with a tale to tell. He also had another one which my late father was trying to research. It had four or possibly five verses and listed bread, cheese, beer and meat(?) in one line of each verse, each verse being about one of them. They may have been listed in a different order in each verse. |
