On the vinal album "The Maken and Clancy Collection", a Shanachie release, on side B, there is a poem between Gentle Annie and Ar Eirinni ne Neosainn Ce Hi. The poem has hauted me for years.

Some of the lines are: "And men who had seen her drank deep and were silent, The women were talking whereever she went, Like a bell that has rung or a wonder told slyly And oh, she was the Sunday of every week."

The poem does not seem complete on the recording, but is a wonderful intro to the Gaelic song that follows.

Anyone know the poem?

Richard

I'm not familiar with it, but I know that Clancy composes his own poetry; perhaps it is one of his?

For those who have not heard him, Liam Clancy is just about the best poetry reader I have ever heard. No matter whose poem (or spoken song lyric) he is reading, the feeling he can impose is incredible.

I recommend a wonderful two-volume video set from the Olympia Theater in Dublin (1991, I think) in which he does several, Yeats and Behan included. Sometimes it's just a little snippet between songs.

His "Pegasus" (Patrick Kavenagh) is spell-binding - always brings tears.

"An Irish Airman Forsees His Death" (Yeats) reduces me to rubble.

See it, hear it - you'll see why..........Tiger

Alice; Thanks for the suggestion. I e-mailed them today and we'll see what happens. I'll let you know.

Ralph: Any idea where to find the video. Sounds wonderful.

Thanks, Richard

Richard......

They're sold separately. The first one I taped from a PBS show, but missed a couple of numbers. Taping quality is OK, with a few problems. The second, I bought at a Clancy concert, so it's complete.

They are available from the Clancy website at:

Title: Liam Clancy - In Close Up, vol 1 & 2 ($25 each)

They're mostly music, of course, but it's wonderful music. Liam is one of my favorites.

If you're interested in (shhh!) copies, b/c me at:

rsbassoc@neca.com

It's on vol 2 of the tapes mentioned above. Irish poet Austin Clarke. Interesting he used the same poem as an intro in this show

.......Tiger

The Planter's Daughter - Austin Clarke

When night stirred at sea
And the fire brought a crowd in,
They say that her beauty
Was music in mouth
And few in the candlelight
Thought her too proud,
For the house of the planter
Is known by the trees. Men that had seen her
Drank deep and were silent,
The women were speaking
Wherever she went -
As a bell that is rung
Or a wonder told shyly,
And O she was the Sunday
In every week.
