Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: GUEST,Tweed Date: 29 Apr 02 - 05:36 PM Hey Joe C., Sorry, I left a dang link closure bracket off up there. Can you fix that? |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: GUEST,Ed Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:37 PM Was I the only one to notice that the fiddle was out of tune? I personally thought it was rather poor. No offence intended, but it's the mudcat way I guess. Any rubbish produced by a fellow 'catter' is always greeted by: "hey, great" comments. Mudcat appears not to have any critical facility at all, when judging other members' work. Having said that, Sorcha enjoys it, and that is the most important thing. Ed |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Sorcha Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:45 PM Which fiddle, Ed? There were at least 2, maybe 3. I can't remember for sure.............. |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Lonesome EJ Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:08 PM I want to come to that picnic Sorch. I'll bring the potato salad. |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: GUEST,Ed Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:17 PM Sorcha, My ears aren't finely tuned enough to pick out the specific fiddle on such a poor quality recording, but one of them certainly is. Surely you can hear that? As I said no offence intended, you all seem to be having fun. I would however reinterate the point that here, or on paltalk or wherever, everything musical that other catters produce seems to be greeted with "that's great" no matter what its musical merits are. Jeri mentioned a similar frustration in her recent thread about songwriting. Ed |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Gray D Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:27 PM Guest Ed Not in tune? As any good music teacher will tell you - however it sounds it's going to be a harmony in one tradition or another. And it's as much about feel as about perfect pitch, y' cloth-eared oaf. Oh, and I thought it sounded: very, very fine indeed like a great evening was being had by all I'm sorry I missed it. (not too tricky to work out why Ed's a guest, is it, 'cats?) |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Áine Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:32 PM Dear Sorcha, I think the tune is just fine and dandy. It really made me want to get up and 'clog'! Can't wait to hear it on the CD. All the best, Áine |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Tweed Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:33 PM Ed Old Buddy, You need to lighten up and listen to some real music. In case you hadn't noticed this is a "Folk Music" site and not Carnegie Hall or the friggin' Kennedy center. Folk music is by nature somewhat outta tune with the mainstream and that's the f*ckin' way it's supposed to sound. You can edit and clean up a song 'til it sounds just perfect, so perfect in fact that it has no sound resembling human beings playing together who may or may not have music degrees. Many of us learned the stuff we play from outta tune old recordings and have taken pains to try and replicate the true sound of the songs. Outta tune fiddle my ass....You highbrows seem to take offence at anyone who attempts to play and have fun with music. How bout puttin' a tune up here yerself. Mebbe you oughta find you a symphonic message board and put the f*cker on there and see how much they enjoy that boring crap. As for every Mudcatter saying "That's great stuff", well mebbe we who've responded really do think it sounds great. Didja ever think of that? I'm feedin' a troll here but I don't give a damn...this lofty attitude crap keeps a lotta people from doin anything at all. |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Sorcha Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:49 PM I just think it is interesting. When doing slides/bluesy stuff, it's pretty hard to keep all the fiddles in exactly the same place in the slide.......and, there are hardly any open strings in that piece, so it would be the fingers that are "out of tune" and not the instrument. I admit, my fingers do get out of tune, sometimes a lot! |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Tweed Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:55 PM No more than any fiddle player in 1920's Memphis or Louisville. Don't change a thing, it's fine as is! |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Sorcha Date: 29 Apr 02 - 07:56 PM And no, Ed, I can't hear it. My pretty significant hearing loss is why I am a fiddler now, and not a Concert Violin Soloist. You try operating with 1/4 of the hearing you are supposed to have.........I think I do pretty well most of the time. |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Biskit Date: 29 Apr 02 - 08:04 PM Well Done Miz Sorcha Your music was well recieved at the Biskit household ~Biskit~ |
Subject: RE: Mz. Sorcha's Florida Blues From: Tweed Date: 30 Apr 02 - 06:55 AM The tune is being heard in a lotta households Biskit. In the last two days it's been heard over sixty times and that's something of a record for any song broadcast from my site. The phones haven't stopped ringing and am negotiating a deal for Sorcha and the Scorchas at next Superbowl Halftime show;~) |
