Hey! anyone going to Upton on Severn Folk Festival this weekend, 3rd- 6th May 2002? Upton, for anyone who does'nt know is a lovely riverside village in Worcestershire, quite near Malvern. I'll be there with the Shellback Chorus but who else is going, any other Shellbacks or Mudcatters? Camping is available- I hope!

Wonderful festival and wonderful singing. I've never sung so much in my life. Started at 10 am Sat & Sun & finished at 3 and 4.30 am respectively.

Tremendous singing in the White Lion - the landlord told us that Sunday was the best single day's takings in his seven years there - may have something to do with the fact I spent 13 hours there, with a couple of breaks to perform with the Shellbacks.

See you all at Alcester - the Holly Bush just happens to be my local.

I sang my little heart out too in the White Lion. Fell asleep on the way home I'd done so much! I think the notice board on the lemonade van is a great idea, (why have I never drunk lemonade before? It's brilliant for a hangover!) We can hunt eachother down or just leave secret messages! Who IS that Salty Dog??

Well I had a great time. I sold lots of Lemonade, sang lots of songs, and put some names to faces. Thanks for writing messages on my noticeboard. I think Trevor's idea of "putting a 'catters noticeboard on my Lemonade shop" will be a regular feature. I met Vectis and her beer towels, Snuffy who sang some lovely songs in The White Lion. I didn't put a face on Salty Dog tho', so maybe we'll meet next time! Thanks everyone, see some of you at Wheaton Aston maybe?

Yes and maybe. Upton is all about hanging-out and being laid-back. The Muggery is a singaround come session most of the time, but people do get played-out. The Swan is very much a "whoever is here" and there is often a session in the yard daytime. And the Kings Head can be a session (or two). Evenings I am usually dancing or stewarding so I rarely see the sessions then. Check-out the survivors session Monday night in the --- ah now there you have me. Pick a venue, listen to the gossip and you will still be wrong, but survivors sessioning there will be. Somewhere. Look for RED.

Are there any late night singing etc at the campsite? And what about kids are there any child friendly venues or activities? Really looking forward to being there - oh and just a word of warning - if you do see someone dressed in red just check that it isn't a duck in disguise although he doesn't always limit himself to one colour it does sometimes happen!

Jane

Last year, the pub singing/sessions seemed to finish about 1pm. Sat & Sun evenings the Rugby club pavilion on the campsite was open till much later for late night noisemaking - Sun I left after 4.30 (i.e. when the beer had totally sold out). This was for festival ticket holders only, and there were stewards there to enforce it. Campsite residents without festival tickets were turned away.

Friday night only the toilet/shower part of the pavilion was open and a few brave souls had a go there.

Peg your ground sheet all around

Set the poles to make it sound.
That's the way to raise your tent.

Peg the guy lines to pull the walls out
That's the way to raise your tent
Add a flysheet good and stout
That's the way to raise your tent

So heave on guy ropes, heave and haul

Alan, somehow I don't see the whole 'Shellback Chorus' getting out of bed for 10.00 on Saturday morning but the more the merrier, although it does work with just a few people, turning it into workshop and getting some lively discussion - as Snuffy will tell you!
John, I don't have my copy of the working programme with me but the Methodist Hall is where it's been held before so I guess it's there again, which is a bit disconcernting for me, being used to having a pint of beer in one hand and a pipe full of baccy in the other when I sing a shanty! And yes, it does finish at noon, on time, because they're usually setting up for the next venue by then!

'It's Time To Go Now.....'

Safe Journeys Everyone, we'll see you there!

And so the festival season begins.

Sal

Ms Lemon
They also got to hear the song - though not till the survivors session - the one I was in anyway. The landlord in the Kings head is so friendly and he was keen to open the back bar (Stable Pipe).

I suggested if they had the word from the landlord next year the info was put in the programme that the Kings Head was a good place to be, and start looking for the stragglers on Monday night there. We had to decamp to the back bar because of the amplified duo in the main bar but that actually allowed singers a chance.

Had a wonderful time Lovely to meet so many friends again. Sorry I couldn't join the Mudpatch cafe choir but heard their full repetoire from the caravan at the other end of the site! I'm still laughing at His Worship & the Pig thanks to the nursing staff of St Derellas and the collective latex glove orchestra (aka the audience.)-you had to be there

Sorry not to meet you, Emma. I wore my Mudcat badge nearly all weekend, but wasn't accosted once! :0)

Q. Where has everyone gone?
A. To look at the Upton-upon-Severn website to see if they can see themselves in the photies!

I've spotted one mudcatter and several Shellbacks so far. How many familiar faces can you find?

:0)
