Hi... the pipe tune "When the Battle's O'er":

Does anyone know where I might be able to determine who composed this tune (if it's known)?

Or... is it traditional? I've not seen a composer credited, but I'd like to know...

I know (have been told ) that the late Andy Stewart set lyrics to the tune. I have a notion to set some words of my own to it, but want to know the origin if I can...

Cheers

Steven

It's credited to P.M. W. Robb in Scots Guards Vol. 1. I don't have it in any other books though to confirm this; there's a number of tunes in the Scots Guards books which are wrongly credited to P.M. Somebody Or Other which are definitely of some antiquity...

You could also try asking over here.

Andy Stewart did "Scottish Soldier" to Green Hills. Can't think of any other song AS set to a 3/4 march... Will look in a couple of my books when I get a minute - possibly in the College of Piping tutors? RSPBA tutors? Its pretty standard fare.

Don't ask me to recall exactly where or when, but I was assured once that the tune is Irish, from County Wexford. Any comment on this?

I found a sound file here. Don't know if that will help or not. URL says it is a MIDI. If you have the right software, you can make sheet music from it.........

I asked on the Scots-L Traditional Music list, and this is the answer which came back:

The composer of (When) The Battle's O'er (aka After The Battle) is Pipe Major William Robb, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders late 1800s. The words were indeed by Andy Stewart.

Thanks very much indeed for all your efforts on my behalf..

I'd tracked down the midi, and the dots, and now have a different problem.

I had "diddled" the tune that was marching around in my head for weeks to someone else, who said "it's EITHER The Battle's O'er OR it's Lochan Dubh" He then sang back a few phrases from the Andy Stewart song (the Battle's O'er) to that tune, and that seemed to be that.

Which was when you guys came in...

However, having played back the tune several time, I'm now starting to think that I've either heavily misremembered it, OR have remembered an entirely different tune OR have created a Frankenstein pipe march of my own.

What I need to do is sequence the tune I have remembered and see if anyone can recognise it

In the meantime thank you for all your efforts once again.

Cheers

Steven
