Ian was not in a car accident. He attempted suicide from a sixth floor window and somehow survived, but lost the use of his legs. He continued playing but was heavily medicated. Some years later, he jumped out the very same window and succeeded in ending his life. He was an amazing musician, a great teacher, and a gentle soul. I still miss him after all these years.

I, too, thought Ian's track was the hightlight of the album.

The Blues Project LP contained tracks from several excellent musicians - John Koerner, Geoff Muldauer, Dave van Ronk, Dave Ray, etc. - but for me the highlight was Ian Buchanan's Winding Boy. I too was sorry to hear about his sad life. I'll be keeping an eye out for the retrospective set.

That's good news. The Blues Project Album was almost certainly my biggest influence as a guitarist. And Ian's track seemed like almost classical guitar in its approach. I was so sad to hear of his unhappy life, and wish I could have met him and told him how great I thought he was.

Ian Buchanan co-founded The Pigmeat Blues Band, who in 1967 recorded an LP (more info at http://www.borderlinebooks.com/canada/p4.html Another member has been Marty Brennan, still making music with the Terraplane All Star Blues Band . There's also a site by one Bennett Harris (http://www.bennettharrisblues.com/ confirming Buchanan's death ('the late IB')

The only recording of his that I've heard is "Whinin Boy" on "The Blues Project" album. (Think that's what it was called and it MAY have been on Electra)

Liked him.

Rick

Clicky is working fine. Thanks, Troll. Do you know if Ian recorded much? My search of Amazon.com only turned up videos of the actor Ian Buchanan, who is not the same person.

Dear Catters,

Once upon a time there was a rising star of the folk-blues scene named Ian Buchanan. Ian was a student of Rev. Gary Davis and taught Jorma Kaukonen (sp?) of Hot Tuna how to play blues licks. The last I heard of Ian Buchanan was that he had been in a very serious auto accident and was paralyzed. This was some years ago, and I have been wondering what became of him.

Anybody know?
