Subject: The Flyin' Column. Nice album From: Rick Fielding Date: 08 May 02 - 06:30 PM As you might gather, there is a great deal of music floatin' around this house day and night. It runs the gamut from Rachmaninov, Buell Kazee, Riley Puckett and Kurt Weill from my side, and Freddie Mercury, Patsy Cline, and K D Lang from Heather. A neat little folk album has gotten it's share of boombox play over the last few weeks and that's Mudcatter Don Meixner's band "The Flyin' Column". Good choice of songs (although there are a couple that I've had to sing too many times myself on St Paddy's day to really appreciate, ha ha!)...some nice banjo by the man himself, and some pretty enthusiastic vocals. It's one of those CDs that 'grows on you'. Good work Don. I want to especially note Don's lovely "old time" harmonica playing...the kind you don't hear very often these days. Don asked me for some technical thoughts and I'll do that in a PM, but all in all it's quite well done, and should make a darn good birthday or Christmas present. Good work Don. Cheers Rick |

Subject: RE: The Flyin' Column. Nice album From: GUEST,Ard Mhacha Date: 09 May 02 - 06:23 AM I hope Don`s choice of name for his Band is not being confused with the late Eamonn Largey`s Group The Flying Column [cira 1970]. Eamonn and his lovely wife the late Kathleen had great success with their two LP`s, Kathleen had a wonderful voice and her songs with The Group have been produced on CD. I must confess, I was confused as I thought the thread was a tribute to a great Group. Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: The Flyin' Column. Nice album From: DonMeixner Date: 09 May 02 - 07:16 AM There has been some name onfusion over the years. Our group The Flyin' Column, has been together since 1970 and have stuck pretty close to home. We were unaware of the The Flying Column until about 10 or 12 years ago. At that time I believe Eamonn had passed away. And I imagine the different spelling and slight punctuation is a small difference but I don't believe that we ever infringed each others market space. Or hurt each others local reputations. In any case we never meant to infringe on a name. We certainly would have chosen another had we realised there was a need but after thrity years what would the point be? I hope the Largey's are pleased the name goes on, even with a changed spelling and on another continent. I would have enjoyed hearing them perform. I have heard from Frankie Curran that their version of Four Green Fields is the best recorded. Don |

Subject: RE: The Flyin' Column. Nice album From: Fiolar Date: 10 May 02 - 08:19 AM In regard to the posting of May 9th - 9.39 am from Agent Provocateur, I often wonder if people who write like that actually talk the same way in real life or is it some idea they have that Irish people speak in a similar way. |
