I have recently started appreciating Jerry Garcia, now that he's no longer with us, and I am surprised at what a bluegrass fan he was and how well he played the banjo. I was never a Dead Head, but I do appreciate his talents. Here's one that he did on Old and In the Way that I really like:

PIG IN A PEN
(Traditional)

(CHORUS)
A......................................................................D
I got a pig at home in a pen, corn to feed him on.
A..................................................E7...........................A
All I need's a pretty little girl to feed him when I'm gone.

Going up on a mountain to sow a little cane.
Put that old gray bonnet on, little Liza Jane.

Going up on a mountain to sow a little cane.
Raise a barrel of sorghum, sweet little Liza Jane.

Dark clouds a-rising, sure sign of rain.
Get your old gray bonnet on, Little Liza Jane.

Yonder comes that gal of mine. How do you think I know?
Tell by that gingham gown hanging down so low.

Bake them biscuits, baby. Bake 'em good and brown.
When you get them biscuits baked, we're Alabama bound.

Not sure, I tried to touch it up, but that's as good as I could get it. I'm gonna work on making it a whole lot easier to do verses and such.

Hi Max, in the "objectionable thread" you said never to delete a message. You really never do ...? ;)

Dear Barbara,

Here's a URL you may find useful:

http://www.rukind.com/music/gdtunes.htm

You'll find "Pig in a Pen" and many of the other tunes covered by the Old and In the Way gang under an index of what are ostensibly Grateful Dead tunes.

Hope this helps. If you can't find a specific tune you're looking for from the Old and In the Way album, post the name of the tune back here and I'll see if I can dig it up out of a personal archive.

Also, if you like Jerry G's work with Old and In the Way, be sure to check out the work of the other musicians in that band. Peter Rowan is doing great stuff (his "Yonder" - with Jerry Douglas, I think - is a recent CD full of good tunes), David Grisman continues to put out bluegrass and his patented "Dawg" music in profusion and you'd probably like any and all of his many collaborations with Garcia over the years.

Good luck and good hunting!

If you're still looking, here's the only "Old and in the way" I know:

Old and in the way
That's what I heard him say
They used to heed the words he said
But that was yesterday
Coal will turn to gray
They'll never care about you
Cause you're old and in the way

As I hear tell he was happy
He had his share of friends and were kind
Now those friends have all passed on
He don't have a place called home
Looking back to a better day
When you're old and in the way.

Refrain

When just a boy he left his home
Thought he'd have the world on a string
Now the years have come and gone
Through the streets he walks alone
Like the old dog gone astray
He's just old and in the way.

Refrain

They'll never care about you
Cause you're old and in the way.

I should have mentioned that the refrain is the first paragraph.

Allen

To awaken this old thread gives me great pleasure. I just started a thread about a movie called "Grateful Dawg". This movie has a Jerry and David and the Old and In the Way gang. It was great.

Love, Annamill
