Far on the Mountain From: dick greenhaus Date: 13 May 02 - 03:46 PM CAMSCO just received a new 2-CD set of field recordings made in the southern Appalachians in 1982 by Mike Yates, and published by Musical Traditions. Far on the Mountain From: Ferrara Date: 14 May 02 - 01:57 PM Like I said, Dick, next time you're down here take a look at my woodburnings and see if there's anything you like.... I wouldn't mind a trade! This one looks awfully good, and I loved the samples I heard. These are very talented folks. - Rita (who is too broke (cheap?) to buy CD's these days....) |

Far on the Mountain From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 14 May 02 - 05:10 PM I have heard some of these and can heartily recommend them to anybody interested in genuine folk music. Mike Yates is a collector with real flair for bringing the best out of the people he records and as much taste, wisdom and knowledge as any collector working today. The Musical Traditions folks are people of the greatest integrity. Their work should be encouraged. That means -buy the albums-you won't regret it. Dick, I'll buy them in England, but all your side of the water should take advantage of your service. |
Subject: RE: A Superb New CD Set! Far on the Mountain From: dick greenhaus Date: 21 May 02 - 11:54 PM The remaining two CDs in this important set have just been released.
Track lists:
Far in the Mountains Vols 3 & 4
Volume Three:
Morris Allen
Volume Four:
Benton Flippen
Mike Yates, who did the collecting in 1979-1983, set out to follow the trail that Cecil Sharp had blazed in 1916-1918. In the course of his trvels, he developed a picture of how little--and how much--- Appalachian folk music had changed in three-quarters of a century. Each 2-volume set is accompanied by a thorough, well-written booklet of over 30 pages, including discussions, discographies and lyrics. This stuff is GOOD! |

The liner notes from these sets are up in the "articles" section, as is a great article by Yates about Cecil Sharp's time in the Appalachians. After reading some of this stuff, you'll be primed for buying the CDs!
