I thought it was about time I started a new thread for our do here in Shropshire, taking place on 24th - 26th May.

Our website is here, and the thread about general goings-on in Shropshire is here.

I hope we get to see some of you 'catters in this part of the world next weekend - Mrs Lemon will have her Mudcat Message Board out on her stall.

Hi Trevor!

I'll be there, singing with Navy Cut. I know that several catters will be up North at the Yorkshire Gathering that weekend (shame about the clash) but it would be nice to see any other catters who are around- particularly if we have to cover a 5-hour slot...(!) Come and listen/join in/lead a song/heckle! And say hello!

Actually I'm gonna be too busy to be selling my lemonade but Mr. Lemon will be supplying the golden? nectar-also his incredible baguettes with brie and salad and real ground coffee, and veggie breakfasts .... just dribbled over the keyboard, sorry. I'll be in the info caravan, I dare say, if you want me.

If you're thinking of coming to our folk weekend I highly recommend seeing our open stage because so many bands have asked to come and play. I found a brilliant 18yr old jazz/classic/folk guitarist called James Argyle and he's definately worth a look!

Lest anybody's worried about the campsite after reading Mr Happy's post in the 'What's on in Shropshire' thread, we've got a different site to the one used for the Priestweston weekend. Ours is in Bishop's Castle itself, it's nice and flat, got unblockable loos (I'm reliably informed - and that's not a challenge!), and will have the redoubtable Col K in charge - SAH!!

As Sal says there'll be scoff available on site and it's all within easy staggering distance of the venues for the various events.

And having gradually been disappearing up my own tail for the last couple of months, I'm going to be missing most of Saturday because of a family wedding for which there is a three-line whip issued by my mother (and I'm nearly 50 for God's sake!). Still hope to see you all on Friday and Sunday though.

Cheers...

Sal, this James Argylle - did you mean he's worth a look or he's worth a listen?!!

Oh, and BTW, anybody who does just happen along could do worse than go to the Sunday morning coffee session at The Poppy House, where Rapsquillion will be holding court, bloated bellies and crinkled credentials on display, cares and sheets to the wind and inhibitions cast away (it says in the programme) along with a special, mystery, famous, singingalong, guest.

THREE shanty sessions at the old port of Bishops Castle! Heaven for an old tar like me. And to think, I nearly went home.

So, if I've got it right, Mrs Lemon is Sally, Mr Sally sells nut cutlets and Col K will have his privates on parade. Can't wait.

I'll be the one with the beard and the Arran sweater.

And didn't I hear talk of a specially brewed drop of stuff for the weekend?

Concerning our folk Weekend; although the weather forecast is wet and windy we are arranging for all the venues to be out of the 'stormy weather' so apart from camping in the wind and the rain, breakfasts, beer drinking, singing, dancing etc., will be in the dry. Anybody want to go to an appalachian step dance workshop Saturday morning? Bayou Seco (and my daughter Lucie and an Ex-Kickin' Alice-Ralph) will be playing. BBC Radio Shropshire are now going to grace us with their presence. Live broadcasting on the Saturday afternoon. That's if any bodies are here-who's coming then?

Yes, it was a good weekend. I particularly enjoyed the Saturday afternoon singaround at the Six Bells - Anne Lennox-Martin is a star!

I must confess, I don't really understand the obsession with shanties. I love to hear a shanty well sung, and there is nothing better than a shanty to get everyone to participate. Martin Hugill was splendid at the Three Tuns, and after his spot, many people in the room contributed a song, which was great, but even if I could work out why some people seem to like shanties to the exclusion of everything else, why the restriction to songs about the sea, or even songs containing the word sea - what's the point? I would rather be at a singaround where shanties would be as welcome as any other song.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I really would like to know.

A great weekend all round, with a reasonable sprinkling of Catters considering there was also the Yorkshire gathering.

Many thanks to 'Catters Mrs Lemon and Trevor for organising it, and Col K for stewarding the campsite.

I also met alanww, Noreen, Mr Red, Llanfair, Old Bones (disguised as a morris man), but I'm afraid I didn't come across Watson, perhaps because I was at all three shanty sessions! (Or did we meet unknowingly?)

The morning coffee singarounds at the Poppy House made a good contrast to the shanties, with the added bonus of unscheduled appearances by Bayou Seco (Sat) and Julie Felix (Sun). Mostly quieter, more reflective stuff, certainly no yells and hollers.

And the singing in both rooms of the Six Bells was surely mixed enough for most tastes.

As to why three booked shanty sessions, you'd have to ask Sally or Trevor for their reasons. But if that's what the programme says, you just have to go with it, or find somewhere else.

It was a wonderful first festival, which I hope will continue in future years, but I guess it won't be the Bishop's Castle International Maritime Festival next year!

WassaiL! V

Very enjoyable weekend, with lots of good singing, playing and friendship. Thanks all. I managed to stay upright despite the muddy entrance to the campsite, mostly due to the loan of Alan's Big Black Boots. I quite grew to like them- perhaps I'll get myself a pair!

Hope the townspeople aren't too horrified by what happened to their playing field :0(

Was lovely to meet up with catters; shame you didn't make yourself known, Watson (or were you undercover?!) I like to meet correspondents in 3D too wherever possible. Maybe another time?

Baby Lemonade has gone and Mrs Lemon returns-did anyone notice I wonder?? Thank you fellow 'cats for your kind words about our folk weekend. I have to admit I really enjoyed myself and halfway thru' the Aardvark concert/ceilidh I was watching the faces of the dancers and they looked so happy, that I began to smile. I had brought my favourite band to Bishop's Castle to share with all my friends and they loved them too. I've had nothing but positive reports from the town so far. The pubs that were used as venues for the sessions are very pleased with the amount of custom they had. One complaint from The King's Head...They ran out of 'Speckled Hen'!! I think Mother Nature decided to give us a trial by water! If we could have contented people after heavy rain, mud, hail and wind, then perhaps we can do it again next year! Thank you all for being there. We couldn't have had a Folk Weekend without you.Next year then?? Oh and guess where Trevor is? Swanning about on a Greek Island while we paddle about in mud removing portaloos! Nice one Trev! Only joking-he's worked so hard he deserves it. Keep your hat on! What does 'Yassoo' mean?

I've found out Trev "Yassoo is a Greek word expressing joy and good spirits. It can also mean "hello," especially at Greek festivals and in Greek tavernas where people are dancing, singing, eating, drinking, enjoying life." Could be used to describe BCFW methinks?

Well, I've managed to find an internet cafe to catch up on the news from home. I must admit, it was with bated breath that I waited for this thread to load but it's great to see such positive feedback.

I'm not sure how we ended up with so much shanty time. Probably 'cos Martin lives just up the road and we wanted to make the most of him, and that Sal had made contact early on with Chris of Navy Cut. Generally I agree, Watson, I like santy to be a part of a general singaround, but I think we also wanted to give each session a bit of focus. Food for thought for next year.

It was a real bummer having to be elsewhere on Saturday, although my mobile was hot all day. For me, the highlight was Sunday am in the Poppy House with Julie Felix joining our singaround. I just loved the atmosphere.

My partner is now thoroughly peed off. Not just the constant subject of conversation for the last three months but now talking about it on a Greek beach - I haven't mentioned next year.......yet!

Anyway, Yassoo, and thanks to everybody for making the weekend a good'n.

And, BTW, SEND MORE BABY OIL!!

Watson: I agree there was a lot of shanty, but it was there for those who wanted it, and to my knowledge there were quite a few who did. What we also arranged were singarounds and tunes sessions for those who wanted them. It all happened at the same time so that everyone had somewhere to go. I did a lot of research at festivals last year, asking my customers what they'd like, and our Folk Weekend was based on my results. Sal

Sal,
I wasn't complaining about the shanty sessions, and I enjoyed Saturday night at the Three Tuns, but I still don't understand why - and it wasn't just at BC, I've seen it at other festivals as well - why does a shanty session turn into an "anything vaguely to do with the sea or with the word sea in it" session.
You know I like songs with a body-count at the end, and I'm sure there have been singarounds with themes of death and destruction, and a theme of sea songs - or rural songs or anything else - is just as valid, but why call it a shanty session when the shanties run out half way through.
Now, songs about death at sea, I could probably manage some of those...

I think the second weekend of June is generally the Pennymoor / Black Dog song and ale in Devon. Doesn't mean there isn't space for a song weekend further north though.
