Subject: Queen Elizabeth II From: Cllr Date: 17 May 02 - 08:45 AM After stating a couple of miserable threads I thought I would start a more cheerful one. My mother became The Mayor of the London Borough of Hillingdon last night and I am her consort. The Queen is coming to visit in a few weeks as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations and my mother and I will escort the Queen around Hillingdon in the morning. Do we have a mudcat lapel badges that I could wear for the occasion as I don't think I should wear a t shirt and the patch won't match my suit.Cllr |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: MMario Date: 17 May 02 - 08:58 AM Bill Sables had some MudCat Buttons - I don't know if he has any still available. they are still quite large - |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: DMcG Date: 17 May 02 - 08:58 AM Try to get her to talk about the Eastenders singing in the pubs during the war. It would be a nice thing to pass on to John Tiffney (See OFFICIAL thread) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: mooman Date: 17 May 02 - 09:02 AM Though neither a Conservative nor a royalist may I congratulate you nevertheless Cllr on a day that will undoubtedly be most memorable for you. Concerning Mudcat lapel badges, Mudcatter Badger up in Yorkshire makes such badges and has often supplied "Gatherings" with personalized lapel badges. He might well make you one for the occasion if you contact him. Very best regards, mooman |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Cllr Date: 17 May 02 - 09:05 AM Thanks mooman, thats the sort of comment that makes me love Mudcat so much, (that and the endless discussions on singing horses)Cllr |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: InOBU Date: 17 May 02 - 09:07 AM Invite her to a sining session! I'd love to hear the old dear sing a song or two! (I am very impressed, enjoy the day!) Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: katlaughing Date: 17 May 02 - 09:11 AM Congratulations to your Mother, the Mayor and to you! I second the recommendation of Badger and Tig. BillSables brought badges made by them when he and AllanC had their great Mudcat Adventure and I treasure mine. It is certainly a good size and should evoke some comment.*bg* kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: alanww Date: 17 May 02 - 10:41 AM Brilliant Cllr. Enjoy yourself. I once had the luck to be invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party - but there was no folk singing at that! Give her a couple of verses of your famous rendition of Blood Red Roses ! She would certainly remember the occasion then! The Queen, she has ordered new troops unto the continent, to strike a last blow at the enemy ... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Sorcha Date: 17 May 02 - 11:12 AM I wouldn't get my hopes up for too much. These things are planned, orchestrated, and choreographed right down to who She smiles at........un planned things are a big no no. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Whistle Stop Date: 17 May 02 - 11:18 AM Being an American, I hesitate to try to instruct anyone on the Queen's English. However, in my experience "consort" when used in this context (as a noun) generally refers to a spouse. Since I doubt you are your mother's spouse, you may want to refrain from referring to yourself this way in the Queen's presence. I also am happy to note that it is Queen Elizabeth II you will be meeting; certainly preferable to meeting Queen Elizabeth I. Hope you enjoy your brush with history. -- WS |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 17 May 02 - 11:37 AM Consort is also a technical term referring to the partner for ceremonial occasions of a (female) mayor or similar civic official; no particular relationship is implied. The Queen will be well aware of this! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: English Jon Date: 17 May 02 - 11:42 AM "Here's a health to our King and likewise our Queen, and all the royal familly wherever they are seen" (Except that we aren't legally allowed to sing this) Have fun Cllr, I know it means a lot to you. Enjoy. Cheers, EJ |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: SINSULL Date: 17 May 02 - 11:53 AM I have a Neil Young button from the 60s. I dare you to wear it and offer Her Majesty a weekend at the NYCFTTS. Oh, SPAW! We have a live one...thinks she's the Queen of England. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: SINSULL Date: 17 May 02 - 11:56 AM Actually, C., I envy you the opportunity. Congratulations! Enjoy your day. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 May 02 - 12:04 PM Remember she's keen on horses. I imagine she doesn't go as long with this libellous suggestion that they can't sing.
I believe there was one point when they had amended the law so that women could be Mayors, but they hadn't changed a few other things, and the consort had to be called the Mayoress. There were cases where great big hairy miners with wives on the council suddenly found they had to be introduced as the Mayoress. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Whistle Stop Date: 17 May 02 - 12:29 PM Malcolm, I stand corrected; I will now go back to speaking my bastardized American English. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 17 May 02 - 12:39 PM As McGrath suggested, it's a fairly recent usage, with which a lot of people won't be familiar. What do you call the (ceremonial) partner of a female mayor in the US? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Noreen Date: 17 May 02 - 12:48 PM Have a wonderful day! :0) Noreen |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: MMario Date: 17 May 02 - 01:08 PM I don't know of an instance in which there would be a "ceremonial partner" - but in general it would be "spouse" or "date" - possibly "escort". In the US a Mayor's wife would not be "Mayoress" - she would be "Mrs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Amos Date: 17 May 02 - 01:26 PM Crack me up, Sinsull. "Nonsense, Mister Slaw, or whatever your name is! I certainly am the Queen of England, and I will thank you to return me to the care of my subjects :immediately!!!!!" LOL! A |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 May 02 - 01:39 PM So what would the husband of the Mayor be called, Mmario? - "Mr Mayor"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Sorcha Date: 17 May 02 - 02:07 PM Just plain Mr. Smith (or whatever), McGrath. We don't generally append a title to a spouse or escort. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: MMario Date: 17 May 02 - 02:12 PM even the "First Lady" title is by usage, nothing formal. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 May 02 - 04:13 AM Hoo... big do's to you two!! Remember, it's Ma'am to rhyme with Pam, don't let Philip speak (too risky!) and don't ask how 'the in-laws' are doing..... I met her eldest a long time ago. Wonderfully vague in a NYCFTTS sort of way..... desperate to do some good before he gets bogged down with being king. Oh, and Camilla really IS that ugly. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Mr Red Date: 19 May 02 - 11:56 AM PM Badger & Tig they will put your name on if you wish. and tell 'em Mr Red is in the market for a few more. AND if you have to give a toast to Her Maj, you can flummox all but the Royals by calling for a toast to the Duke of Lancaster. She will be impressed by your erudition. Do the homework and you will "know something not a lot of people know". (Hint - the reigning monarch IS said Duke.) Oh & congrats on the vicarious Mayoralty. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatter to meet Queen Elizabeth II From: Eric the Viking Date: 19 May 02 - 12:24 PM Don't leg the dogs pee on your leg! Have a great time, enjoy yourselves-met the Q once when I worked in the Yorkshire museum, all lined up we were to be presented. Bursting for a pee-she had the royal loo-the gents with screens up against the urinals-never used it though, but we were bursting by the time it was all over. She smiles politely, you smile back and nod. Have a memorable day. |
