Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wont you come down to Yarmouth town From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 21 May 02 - 01:51 PM I know I'm in danger of sounding like a PR-person, but since I'm getting no profit from this (except the satisfaction of beating Ralphie to the draw, hee hee hee): There's a GREAT rendition of this song by Nic Jones on his double-CD "Unearthed".

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wont you come down to Yarmouth town From: Kernow John Date: 21 May 02 - 02:44 PM Harry You just beat me to that, I dug the set out to see and there it was. I was being lazy though and hoping someone would have the dots. Now I'll have to be nice to SWMBO and get her to transcribe it for me. Thanks all John |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: YARMOUTH TOWN From: Uncle Jaque Date: 14 May 04 - 11:43 PM I live in Yarmouth, Maine - and the Town's motto is "Our Latchstring Is Always Out." and the Town Seal prominently depicts a long haired woman standing in a clam shell or some such. "...Won'tcha come down, t' Yarmouth Town?" Makes me wonder if that song and this Town (on the Atlantic coast in Casco Bay, a major shipbuilding site during the age of sail) might have a connection somehow. The old Sailors used to call it "Pigtown" back around the 1830s, apparently. Are you familiar with "Cruisin' 'Round Yarmouth"? That's a similarly bawdy old Foc'sle song. Yarmouth (I assume England) must've been a pretty wild town in it's time! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: YARMOUTH TOWN From: Dave Hanson Date: 15 May 04 - 06:05 AM The late and much lamented Peter Bellamy used to a great rendition of this song. eric |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: YARMOUTH TOWN From: greg stephens Date: 15 May 04 - 07:03 AM Yarmouth(England) is just like this now. Walk down any street at night and there's hardly a window without a bit of string hanging down. And at the other end of the string....wow. |
